EUROVISION SONG CONTEST 1997, DUBLIN, IRELAND


After a year's break in Norway the contest returned to The Point Theatre in Dublin for the 3rd time in 4 years.  Italy returned to the contest for the last time, preferring to concentrate on the San Remo festival.  However they went out with a bang finishing 4th.  Turkey finished in the top 10 for only the second time in 22 years with the returning Sebnem Paker finishing 3rd.  Maarja-Liis Ilus returned for Estonia this time on her own.  Alma Cardzic returned for Bosnia & Herzegovina also on her own this time.  The winning entry was sung by Katrina & The Waves who had had a huge Worldwide hit in the mid 1980s with "Walking On Sunshine".  The margin of victory was enormous.  They scored a new highest score, beating the previous best by 1 point, and they finished 70 points ahead of their nearest challenger.  A record 10 countries gave it top marks with a further 5 giving it 10 points.  In fact only 6 of the voting countries didn't have the song in their top 3 and only 2 of those (Spain and Malta) giving it less than 6 points.  It remains one of the most comprehensive victories in ESC history.  At the other end of the table Norway scored their 4th 0 points.  They were joined on 0 points by Portugal who hadn't scored 0 since their debut 33 years earlier.  There was a major change to the voting in 1997 with the introduction of televoting in Austria, Germany, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.  Rather than a jury deciding on the votes  the watching millions could have their say.  Over the next couple of years more and more countries used televoting until it became standard.

I really love the entry from Turkey: Sebnem Paker - Dinle. My number one this year and one of my favorite ESC-songs ever.
Really cool that Turkey finally got succes after just one top ten place in 21 years (9th place in 1986).

I agree that Turkey had the most unfair esc results for so many years.. but then when Turkey started to cash in their good results it was exactly when I started to disconnect myself with their entries.. Sebnem's 1996 entry is absolutely amazing.. but the 1997 one fails to work on me ; it's quite a surprise it worked so well on juries. But I am still glad the juries proved they could vote for Turkey after all those years. Without "Dinle" we could have wondered if the juries weren't just against Turkey.. (After 99 it's not going to be the same issue when talking about Turkish final esc results)
Still I would have liked if one of these would have gone top 3 instead of "Dinle: 1975, 1980, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1990 ot 1996! All very underrated!

I love Dinle - but I love Sebnem's 96 entry almost as much.  Besinci mevsim is so often underrated by fans but it is a stunning song....probably my 2nd favourite Turkish entry ever after the truly wonderous Seninle bir dakika (1975).  I also agree that since they've gone all "commercial" with their entries I haven't actually liked a single Turkish entry (last 1 I liked was Yorgunum anla in 2000).

yes Turkey 1975 is a masterpiece (go check my all time top 10 to see how I rank it!)
I beg to differ.. I think Turkey 2002 is very nice and not that commercial. Though it was an obvious "try" from Turkey and definitely a commercial hit, I don't think Athena can fit in the mainstream "type" and 2004 being as all modern esc very weak, I have Turkey as my winner that year.. and then 2005, 2006 and most of all 2007 were all awful entries.. but 2008 was back on track and gave me good hopes.. then we got you know what by Hadise.. :worry:

I agree about 2005, 06 & 07 all being awful.  I particularly hate Sibel - her voice grated on my nerves.  As for Kenan - just STOP SMILING :doh:.  2002 wasn't great.  I just don't like Athena at all :doh:.  I also agree that last year was good...and then came Hadise :doh:

I agree with you. Personally I like Dinle very much, but Turkey got really good results the past few years with songs that I don't like.

But I'm happy that Turkey got a good result in 1997. They deserved it.  ;)

totally agreed, it felt nice that the JURIES for their last year gave a top 3 result to Turkey! Charming!
but "Dinle" was strongly overrated, whereas many songs were underrated in the past!

I loved Katrina & The Waves...can't believe this is the last time the UK won though! Well actually I can...we've been sending rubbish songs for quite a few years now, bring back the good old ESC days for us!

I know that I am two years late LOL ... but I simply have to post that I had never expected to find an ESC-related site where people think that Sebnem Paker's 1996 is equal to or even better than her 1997 effort. I had always thought that I was the only one preferring Beşinci mevsim to Dinle.

well it's SO obvious to me, her 96 song seems like an actual song, not an esc entry, while the 97 entry felt totally clichéd and over the top, "typical" postcard of turkey... i really love turkey in esc, "Dinle" should never have been the first top 3 of the country

and yes you're welcome to discuss esc with us even two years later, AND I am in **** love with BWO, they're amazing and should have won both MF 06 and 08... "You're Not Alone" is their best MF song ever but I only have it second, because of Caroline af Ugglas's "Snälla, snälla"

And Turkey should probably have got their first top 3 with their debut song. Well, 1975 was a pretty strong year (not for my taste but I think so anyway ...) ... but that great Klips ve Onlar only came 9th in lame and uninspired 1986 is one of the great scandals ESC's history is sort of defined by.  :( :mad: 'Halley' should definitely have been top 3!

75 4th / 78 18th / 80 5th / 81 3rd  :ohmy: / 82 10th / 83 19th / 84 11th / 85 10th / 86 2nd / 87 18th / 88 4th / 89 6th / 90 8th / 91 16th / 92 22th / 93 25th / 95 20th / 96 6th ...

From the televoting era I really like 1999, 2001, 2004, 2008 and 2010. 2003, 2006 and 2011 were ok too. Still one of my favourite ESC countries.

well then 97 they're 17th and 15th in 98
but Turkey comes back strong to me: 1999: 10th; 2000: 7th; 2001: 11th; 2002: 3rd; 2003: 4th, 2004: 1st
then it seems to go all wrong and turkey is rather down in my list, and last in 2007
but they're 2008: 5th and 2010: 2nd and i like 2006 and 2011 okish

I also prefer Turkey 1996 to 1997. Dinle is of course good, but Beşinci mevsim is magnificent and lovely song which is quite close to my top 10 ever.  :heart:
