Eurovision covers
« on: August 22, 2010, 09:27:38 PM »
Hello, I just noticed that there is something this forum is missing - something which is connecting us. It is Eurovision Covers.  :) You can post here all kinds of covers and tell your opinion about them. I hope that this thread will become very popular.  :goodjob:

I want to start this thread by posting here a Finnish cover of the winning song of ESC 1977 (Marie Myriam - "L'Oiseau et l'Enfant). The cover will be performed by the Finnish legend, Katri Helena!  :)

Katri-Helena - Lintu ja lapsi (Bird And The Child)

She is singing it here in tv show Euroviisujen parhaat, "The Best of Eurovision", in 2007.

One of the most successful ESC covers in the UK is

Matt Monro - Walk Away

which for those that don't know is a cover of Austria 1964 - Udo Jürgens - Warum, nur warum.  In fact most people I know didn't have a clue that this was an ESC song

I'm not convinced by Anna but I guess Sonja did really put her style much in the song

however Katri-Helena is a wonder and anything she touches turns into jewels, and when she takes an esc evergreen, the connection is purely perfect

great reprises (especially that Imaani's song was in such different genre)
yet,i keep feeling sad that "katson sineen taivaan" didn't become itself an esc winner she could have reprised along Lux 73 and Fra 77 as it's as amazing as these esc classics!

ah! but that doesn't do justice to her, maybe she could have sung about her own birth town, Tohmajärvi or about Finland's best city (Helsinki Turku, Tampere? or whichever you love best Niko?)

that's awesome, great song with a great singer (her euroviisut 77 song was so much better than her 78 boring song)

in the same category, Anneli singing Spain 85 is an impressive result too

In 1998 the UK TV show Eurotrash hosted by Antoine de Caune produced a show called A Song For Eurotrash where some bands covered ESC songs.  I'll post some of the versions here...but beware - Eurotrash don't exactly do things normally!!

Saint Etienne covering 1968 winner La La La

ah, Antoine de Caunes is a huge figure of French TV: he's a comedian, director, producer and he always comes up with the greatest ideas. I vaguely knew he worked in England for a while and remember mostly that "Poupée de cire, poupée de son" was quite a hit in the Eurotrash reprise, but am I wrong? Anyway for thos who don't know, Antoine de Caunes is Jacqueline Joubert's son (for the kids who don't know their esc history, Jacqueline Joubert hosted esc twice in 59 and 61).

and Harel is just so freakin hot, gosh i want him really bad, anyway I've had seen these reprises before and love them for their simplicity, if only Harel wasn't so damn nervous on the esc stage, anyway h's one of esc 2010 best for sure

There was a cover of Poupée de cire, poupée de son on the show - but I couldn't find it :(  I did however find a cover of the song by Canadian band Arcade Fire :o

Now I've always been critical of the song - but hearing this live version from just 4 years ago shows just how good Gainsbourg was at writing songs because it still sounds contemporary over 40 years after he wrote it!!!!

well yes Gainsbourg is mostly remembered for being a musical visionary... in 1990 for his last tour before his heart attack he reprised a lot of his first hits, all in the late 80s electro tune and it sounded amazing (i have the CD of the live concert). The Napoli orchestra did boo his esc 65 song before it won with the juries, which says a lot. Plus if you add the sexual lyrics hinted there "warmth of boys" it's a very "modern" 60s entry, at least an actual 60s song (i love esc in the 60s love love love love love it but we gotta admit it's not really rock n rollish)... France Gall is an icon of 70s and 80s music mostly for being such a lefty committed singer, but she STILL is mad for having debuted with womanized Gainsbourg (Brigitte Bardot, Jane Birkin...) who wrote some very vulgar songs for her at 16 (their song "Annie likes lollipops" is cult here, it's even more graphic when they play with the word Annie, coz the lollipop has "anise" flavor and well you get where they go from there)

ps: i edited your video for "lalala" it was Harel and Gali again
