Let's improve our English!
« on: September 18, 2007, 08:48:09 PM »
Since most of us don't have English as our mother tongue, we can use this thread for questions about the English language.

I think it can be quite handy :)
Especially when you have English homework for school or such thing :D

As a native speaker of English I am more than happy to answer any questions you may have about our weird and wonderful language

There's nothing weird about it :D

I have to admit though, that since my trip to Egypt, my English went backwards..I mean..it got a bit worse

There's plenty weird about it....particularly in pronunciation.  Take the -ough ending of words which has 5 or more different pronunciations

though - pronounced tho
bough - pronounced bow
cough - pronounced coff
thorough - pronounced thoror
enough - pronounced enuff

I'm sure there's more as well

Well, considering I've learnt English in order to stop harassing my family to translate me Final Fantasy VII, and used similar videogames texts for my early education, plus later some chatting with my at that moment yet not brother-in-law, I've had some early grammatical problems, plus some pronunciation problems. The grammatical problems became less and less with the continous exposure to english, but the pronunciation problems, where nowhere near the average (not specially english educated) argentinian or spanish level, are still noticeable (very).

Even with pronunciation problems, I'm still pretty proud of my english vocabulary :P, I'm a Scorpio, so I'm naturally somewhat arrogant, so you can bet I was happy when I corrected my english teacher when she said the word thrice, as synonim of three times, didn't exist (fine, so it's seldomly used, but it's used :P) :D

I bet it made you proud - thrice does exist and is used...quite often in a jokey way "thrice nightly" is used to describe how often someone who has sex a lot has it :-[

Hehe, one learns new things every day :P

I was pretty happy when I discovered a set of exercises from 2 years ago (when I thought I had quite a highly competent english - arrogant me again) and discovered that I had quite improved from that moment (which obviously means I wasn't as NEARLY as competent as I thought I was, you have to take care with whom do you compare yourself with, always: If you shine in comparison to some of your colleagues, it doesn't necessarily mean that you shine (it could simply mean that the ones you compared yourself with sucked at english) (and yes, that sounds strong, but believe me, that's quite close to the truth :P)

Hehe, that reminds me of the sanity of the sane competition between colleagues, I had my internal rivals for almost every subject, in order to achieve better results (normally I failed :( :P), normally it was someone I admired or something, funnily enough that's true for all subjects but ironically enough, english, in which I competed mentally against someone I actually despised (a true idiot), but he was actually quite good in english (the only subject he was good in though :P)

Meh, I'm rambling.... I'll shut up for now :P, I need to control myself more :D

Long threads are the best ! Not only that they challenge your English skills, they also challenge your patience. When you'll see that you can read every single word without getting bored and actually understand what the conversation is about you'll be happy to start talking a lot. :P
