well Finland is definitely taking steps towards the East.. France on the contrary is sadly taking steps towards the West as France is getting back in the NATO which we left in 1966 in order to not be under the Americans' power.

Today arrived the president of Russia, mr. Dmitry Anatolyevich Mededev, to Finland for 2 days official state visit to Finland. He met at 12 p.m. mrs. Tarja Halonen, the president of Finland, and he will also meet at least prime minister, foreign minister, foreign trade minister, minister of transport and comm and also the chairman of parliament. The negotiations will be about Nordstream gas pipe, Russian forest industry, border problems, visa problems, traffic problems at the border with Finland and Russia, and the new European "security architecture" which according to Russia is built against Russia.

There was also a large number of demonstrators waiting for him and they were demanding Karelia back to Finland, freedom of speach to Russia and other things.

MY NAME IS BOND, JAMES BOND

The United Nations' goodwill ambassador, Sir Roger Moore, 81, is just visiting Finland as a part of his goodwill project. The Finnish MTV3 channel's "happy news reporter" was interviewing him yesterday and some of the questions were:

- What is the secret of your healthy life?
- I never drink from a filthy glass
- What keeps you on such a good mood?
- fast cars and beautiful women
- What would you still say to people?
- I am still alive, even more.

RETIRING GENERAL SECRETARY OF NATO ON A DAY VISIT IN FINLAND

Mr. Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, the retiring general secretary of NATO, is just visiting Finland. and saying his goodbyes. Finland is not a NATO member, even if most of our government ministers would prefer it. de Hoop said that Finland is a good and reliable NATO partner and he hopes that Finland will be soon in the future a NATO member. About 65 % of Finnish citizens, including I,  are against Finland's NATO membership.

Jaap de Hoop Scheffer will retire in the end of July and the next general secretary of Nato from the 1st of August onwards will be the prime minister of Denmark, mr. Anders Fogh Rasmussen.

VISITORS FROM GREECE

It seems that Finland is a very popular country at the moment, because once again we have here an official state visitor, this time from Greece. Mr. Karolos Papoulias, the president of Greece, arrived to Finland together with his wife Maria Panou earlier today. They will meet Mrs. Tarja Halonen later today and there will be a dine in Presidential palace this evening. Mr. Papoulias is also going to place a garland to the Hietaniemi cemetary, in front of the soldier's grave statue.

Tomorrow on wednesday mr. Papoulias and his wife will visit Parliament house and Helsinki university and inaugurate a photo exhibition in the Helsinki City Hall. In Helsinki University he is going to attend a seminar on the marble sculputes of Parthenon. Mr. Papoulias has been demanding British Museum to give those sculptures back to Greece already for very many years.

Mr. and mrs. Papoulias will return back home on thursday.

A FILM GURU IN FINLAND

Earlier this week we had a very famous and brilliant film director here in Finland! Now you may start thinking all possible Hollywood film directors, but no, you got it wrong! I really mean BRILLIANT film director.  :)

Here was mr. István Szabó, one of the most important film directors of our days. If you don't know him by name, let me tell you that he is Hungarian and that he is well-known for such films like Budapesti mesék (1976),  Mefisto (1981), Colonel Redl (1985), Hanussen (1988), Taking Sides (1995), Sunshine (1999) and Being Julia (2004).

During the past year there have been several well-known celebrities in Finland, but now it is time to start updating this thread. And it would be nice if also others would tell who are visiting their countries.  ;)

Anyway, at the moment we have in Finland a very well-known president from South America. He arrived here yesterday and is leaving tomorrow on Sunday. He is the president of Bolivia,

MR. EVO MORALES

Mr. Morales has been discussing together with our president and prime minister and today he is giving a speech in Helsinki University. The theme of  his  speech is "Global Warming, Capitalism And The Rights of Mother Earth"

Mr. Morales kind of shocked  the people in the beginning of his trip, by jumping inside a van, changing his clothes to his football costume and started playing in the Bolivian football team. There was an arranged friendship football match between Finland and Bolivia in Helsinki and Bolivia won it 2 - 0. Mr. Morales is a very keen football player.

But one day the old lovers long for more
Dreams and desires of another youth
And they leave their families, betray their friends
They don't want advice about how to be happy

A LOVELY MAORI NIGHTINGALE IN TAMPERE TODAY!

Today on wednesday June 16th my favorite classical music singer is having a concert in the big hall of Tampere-house. She is the most famous Maori origin singer, a real pearl -

DAME KIRI TE KANAWA

Dame Kiri will be singing songs by Mozart, Richard Strauss, Canteloube, Guastavino and Ginastra and opera arias by Richard Strauss and Puccini. I tried to get a ticket when I heard about the concert, but I was too late, because the tickets were sold out really soon.  :(

Here is Dame Kiri singing "Let the Bright Seraphim" from the oratorio "Samson" by George Frideric Handel. The orchestra is Philharmonia Orchestra Carl Davis as conductor. Recorded at Barbican Center, London, UK, 1988. Dame Kiri became world famous when singing this song in the Royal Wedding of Prince of Wales Charles and Lady Diana Spencer in 1981. Please enjoy!  :)
