I again yet again disagree. The stages don't at all look similar. It's true that since we had Ireland hosting it all 4 times, it ends up sharing a similar spirit, type. But Oslo 96 was definitely a very different hosting, very modern for its time since the voting was in a studio entirely made of fake screenings. And even Irish settings weren't that similar, the huge Millstreet hosting was definitely different to the intimacy of Dublin 95. Alas, Birmingham 98 and Jerusalem 99 have nothing in common with each other and with the past stages.

I actually think the 00s have way more similar stages. Apart from the ancient greek theater in 2006, I don't see much differences between 04, 05, 06.. and then 08 is a BIG copy of 07, Helsinki's hosting being technically speaking the best one by far far far far of the decade. It's going to be equivalent to what Goteborg 85 was for the 80s!

That's exactly what I said. My message is a little bit unclear, but I said that before 2003 there was more difference between the stages. The stages in 2003 and the years after looks similar (except 2006, the Greek theater looks a little bit different indeed).

But I really like the Irish stages in 1988, 1993, 1994, 1997.

speaking of stages, the country that hosted esc the most often is also one of the worst hoster.. I mean 72, 77 and 82 are among the worst!

I agree about the UK being bad stages...but surely there weren't many worse than Munich 83?  It looked like they were singing in a barn

lol i think they wanted it to look like Star Trek you know, very modern for its time.. big laser, iron-like background.. but yes it ended up looking overwhelming.. and crushing.. but i still hate 82 more! but there's been many weird or not so good (89 lol, pale copy of 88 ; 91 was confusing and messy ; 92 was way too dark ; 99 had awful sound no wonder they didnt want an orchestra..)

STAGE 2009



I must admit I'm very impressed with the stage this year. I didn't expect Russia to be the one to finally break the very repetitive and similar round-shape stages we had in the past (2008 being a huge copy of 2007).. But we finally have it, since Millstreet, a triangular shaped stage! It's supposed to look like Russian avant-garde, I'm not enough an expert but it does resemble what we usually see of Russian art & science from the 30s and then later on in the 60s. I must admit I'm convinced with this!

It's quite amusing really.  83 was the complete opposite of 82.  The arena in Harrogate was tiny and the staging showed that...and the arena in Munich was huge and the staging showed that too.  I agree about 89 - did they just move it from Dublin to Lusanne and lose some bits on the way? .  Rome 91 was just a complete disaster of a stage....and the orchestra wasn't much better either.  92 - was that the one with the viking ship theme....where the hosts appeared to be in a different studio?.  Agree about 99 too - the sound was horrendous.

Looking at this years one it does look quite interesting...and it's nice to see a change after Belgrade copying Helsinki very badly.

I don't like Munich '83 (very dark) and and Oslo '96 (tiny stage).
