EUROVISION SONG CONTEST 1980, THE HAGUE, NETHERLANDS

The 25th Eurovision song contest was an historical contest for many reasons.  Israel withdrew from the contest because it was scheduled for a holy day.  It's the only time that the defending champions have not defended their title.  Their place was taken by Morocco - so far the only African nation to take part.  Their debut was not a good one with only Italy giving them any points at all. It was also the first contest in which Greece and Turkey took part together.  Eurovision's two most successful artists took part and finished 1st and 2nd.  For Johnny Logan it was the first of 2 victories as an artist.  For Katja Ebstein it was her 3rd participation and her 3rd top 3 finish.  There were a couple of returning artists.  Paolo del Medico returned 11 years after her debut and improved her position to 4th.  Maggie MacNeal had lost the Mouth from 1974 and finished 2 places lower than in 1974 in 5th.  Anna Vissi made her first appearance for Greece 26 years before her 2nd appearance for Greece (she appeared for Cyprus in 1982 as well).  Norway and Belgium battled it out for the weirdest entry of the year.  The Norwegian entry was a homage to Lapland and started quite sensibly until a bizarrely dressed man appeared singing "hey noni" or something like that.  The Belgian entry was a homage to Eurovision itself.  Both were bizarre and both failed miserably.  Luxembourg had the most ridiculous entry however and a performance which included a man (Ralph Siegel no less) in a penguin suit.
