EUROVISION SONG CONTEST 1981, DUBLIN, IRELAND

The 1981 contest was the 2nd to be held in Dublin.  Austria opened the contest for the second consecutive year represented by Marty Brem who had been part of the Austrian group the previous year.  They were once again followed on stage by Turkey.  Singing 4th was former winner Jean-Claude Pascal returning 20 years after his victory.  His song was more suited to 1961 than 1981 but he finished a respectable 11th.  Israel returned to the contest having missed 1980 and we welcomed Cyprus to the contest.  Amongst the other returning contestants was Cheryl Baker who had been part of Coco in 1978 which was the UK's worst place song to date.  She more than made up for that disappointment.  Also returning, for the 4th time and in their 4th language, were Peter, Sue & Marc. Björn Skifs was making his 2nd appearance for Sweden. Tommy Seebach was making the 2nd of his 3 appearances for Denmark. The 4 countries who had scored 100+ points in 1980 all did so again and were joined by France. Norway scored 0 points again. Italy were absent from the contest. The voting produced one of the funniest and most famous moments in ESC history when host Doireamm Mo Bhriain called for the Yugoslav jury's votes. There was complete silence. She kept trying and trying to reach them. Eventually contact was made and Doireann asked for the scores to which the Yugoslav spokesperson snapped "I don't have them!". The audience erupted into laughter. The voting was close all the way through. With only 2 countries left to vote The UK, Germany and Switzerland were all tied on 120 points and France were a further 17 points behind. It was looking unlikely that the Swiss would win as they were one of the countries left to vote. The Swiss jury gave nothing to Germany, 8 to the UK and 12 to France to leave the scores as UK 128, Germany 120, Switzerland 120, France 115. It was down to the Swedish votes. Switzerland were out of the running straight away getting only 1 point. The votes proceeded until 8 without any of the other challengers getting anything. When the Swedish gave 8 points to the UK victory was theirs, despite 10 for France and 12 for Germany.
