EUROVISION SONG CONTEST 1982, HARROGATE, UNITED KINGDOM

For reasons best known only to themselves the BBC chose the small town of Harrogate as the venue for the 1982 contest.  Trailers before the contest were asking the question "Where is Harrogate?" - the same question that must have crossed the minds of most people watching the contest.  It certainly must have crossed the minds of the French authorities who withdrew from the contest calling it "A monument to drivel".  The most noticable thing about the contest was short titles and artists names.  13 of the artists had only 1 name, 5 songs had only 1 word titles and a further 2 had 2 word titles which were 1 word repeated.  Perseverance finally paid off for Ralph Seigel & Germany.  Having written the German entries from 1976, 1979, 1980 and 1981 as well as the Luxembourg entries from 1974 and 1980 he finally got his victory.  Jahn Teigen returned to the contest 4 years after his humiliating 0 points in Paris and teamed up with 2 time former contestant Anita Skorgan.  The female half of the British duo, Bardo, was a member of Prima Donna 2 years previously.  Anna Vissi appeared for her native Cyprus 2 years after and 24 years before appearing for Greece.  Finland ended with 0 points despite the positive message of the song. The voting was one sided right from the very beginning as the German song held the lead right from the first votes except for the 2nd set of votes in which Luxembourg ignored the German entry completely (the only country to do so) and by giving 10 to Israel briefly gave them the lead.  The winning margin of 61 points was absolutely huge and remained the largest points victory for 15 years.
