EUROVISION SONG CONTEST 1983, MUNICH, GERMANY

The 1983 contest started with the longest introduction on record being conducted in 3 languages.  Staged in what looked like a giant barn the contest itself was fairly forgettable.  The winning song was the first winner since the Spanish, Dutch and French winners from 1969 not to hit the chart in the UK.  Israel came 2nd for the 2nd consecutive year represented by one of Eurovision's most successful artists, Ofra Haza.  Carola represented Sweden for the first of 3 times.  Jahn Teigen returned for the 3rd time and finally finished in the top 10.  Ami Aspelund represented Finland 6 years after her sister.  Guy Bonnet returned for France 13 years after his first appearance.  Mariella Farre made the first of her 2 appearances for Switzerland. For the first time since 1966 2 songs finished on 0 points.  The Turkish entry was quite frankly bizarre starting as a ballad, changing into a Dixieland number, before going operatic and finishing in a dramatic climax. It was doomed to failure.  Following the Turkish entry on stage was a brave entry from Spain.  Totally ethnic and sung by a lady wearing a blanket it was equally doomed to fail.
