EUROVISION SONG CONTEST 1984, LUXEMBOURG, LUXEMBOURG

For the 4th and final time the small state of Luxembourg held the contest. The host Desirée Nosbusch was only 19 and remains the youngest host ever. Sweden opened the contest with a very slick performance of a very ordinary song, but swept to victory. With the 1983 winner being performed last and the 1984 winner being performed last it was the 2nd time (after 1969 when the UK and Dutch entries were performed consecutively) that winning songs had been performed consecutively albeit 12 months apart Smiley. This years UK entry was booed by the crowd due to English football fans running riot in Luxembourg the previous autumn. Mary Roos returned for Germany 12 years after finishing 3rd. The Irish entry was written by 1980 winner Johnny Logan and sung by Linda Martin who would return 8 years later to win with another Logan written song. Hot Eyes made the first of 3 appearances for Denmark. Turkey managed their best finish to date finishing 12th. The voting was quite close. With Portugal the final country to vote, Sweden lead Ireland by 6 points. The tension didn't last long as Portugal only awarded Ireland 2 points and Sweden's second victory was assured.
