Eurovision Song Contest 1993, Millstreet, Ireland

EUROVISION SONG CONTEST 1993, MILLSTREET, IRELAND

The tiny village of Millstreet in County Cork was chosen to host the 1993 contest.  3 new nations were welcomed to the contest after a qualification round containing 7 countries who had wanted to join the contest.  The 3 new countries were Bosnia & Herzegovina, Croatia and Slovenia.  Slovakia, Estonia, Romania and Hungary all had to wait another year.  It was also announced that the countries finishing in the bottom 7 would miss the following years contest to make way for all the new countries from the former Eastern Bloc who wanted to take part.  As it happened only the bottom 6 were relegated along with Italy who withdrew after the 1993 contest.   Luxembourg, having finished in the bottom 6, have never returned to the contest.  There were 3 returning artists, Finland's Katri-Helena returning 14 years after her debut, Tony Wegas returning for Austria and Tommy Seebach returning for a 3rd and final time for Denmark.  The voting was made closer than it should have been.  For some reason they were unable to contact the Maltese spokesperson straight away so their votes were held back until last.  Ireland had held the lead pretty much since the beginning but with only the delayed Maltese votes to come they held an 11 point lead over the United Kingdom.  The votes proceeded with neither country receiving anything.  With only their 12 points to reveal neither country had received any points.  Malta proceeded to give 12 to Ireland and a 23 point victory was theirs.  Ireland became the 4th country after Spain, Luxembourg and Israel to successfully defend the title.

Belgium and the Netherlands were underrated, that's all I can say about this ESC. :)

I have absolutely no idea how Belgium finished last - the song is just gorgeous - she sung it well - OK she looked a mess but that shouldn't have been held against her.

The Netherlands on the otherhand were massively overrated IMO - a very average pop song performed adequately

Totally agreed.
A 6th place is very good but in my opinion The Netherlands deserved more.
Okay, maybe there were better songs (Ireland, the UK and Switzerland were just wonderful), but I think that Ruth Jacott has given a good performance and I love the song very much. Great lyrics too. People would like this song a lot more if they know what the song is about.

though I love NL 93, I also just purely love 1993 as a contest, I have so many songs ranked above 90/100 that it's insane! To me, the NL end up being 7th just because i liked much more better.
However, Belgium is my dead last, very very very boring song, awfully performed, the girl barely could sing, and we ALL know what the Barbara Dex award stands for..

Yes, 1993 was a very strong year. I like Portugal too!

Maybe it's not really important, but Ireland always had a great stage when they organized the contest.
The stages now look very similar. Before 2003 there was more difference between the stages.

There is just something about Tih deževen dan that I like. For me it's a good song.

I love more entries from this year, can't put them all in my top 5. :P

Bosnia was definitely good, it is in my top 10 for this year.

But I prefer the Slovenian entry. I really like that song.  :)

i love the bosnian lyrics, they are along the best of all time! and the fact the singers were hostages in airport and the conductor couldn't even get to Ireland makes it a very beautiful story for Bosnia to take part in esc 93

I'm listening to the Bosnian song now and it's a beautiful song indeed  :goodjob:

Amazing that they participate under such difficult circumstances.

By the way, the Belgian song is beautiful too.

Funny to read this thread 4 years later. I can say that my opinion slightly changed over the years. Now my favorite entries of this year are Portugal and Bosnia & Herzegovina.

I'm very proud that the Dutch jury gave the 12 points to Portugal.  :P
