How many countries will compete in the 2011 esc Final?
« on: May 30, 2010, 02:14:58 AM »
I'm curious about something: having one of the Big 4 countries to host the contest next year, does that mean that we'll have only 24 countries in the Final in Germany?

I hope not, it would be unfair to have one country less in the final just because of that.

I'll rather have them give Turkey their extra spot.

That would be really awesome! Turkey would get to the Final anyway. Having them in the Final from the start would also give a chance to another country to qualify for the Final.

Yes, it will be really good to get chance to else countries. I did just one long blog entry why Slovenia don't get in Final. But unfortunately they got also 16th place in Semifinal this year.

To be honest I don't think the EBU ever considered this situation actually arising as the Big 4 were always seen as the financiers who will never win again (partly because the rest of Europe objected to the guaranteed final place so wouldn't vote for them - this is not my personal opinion BTW) - so it may be a while before we have a decision.  I think it would be fair to give the "host" place to Turkey (although they won't be hosting of course).

Turkey would get in the final anyway, so I think that it's the best solution to give them the 5th spot.
The EBU can also decide that 21 countries will qualify from the semi-final next year, but that's not a good idea with 2 semi-finals.

They might change the format again . Have the top 10 be in final directly

Yes!
I have thought all times that, why they don't do so again. Or atleast Top 5.

In this case that is the best thing to do . That way countries would be satisfied with a Top 10 finisher and have only one semi final instead of 2

In some ways I agree - plus it would give more countries more chance.  For example we can be about 99% sure that Greece, Turkey, Russia, Azerbaijan, Armenia & Ukraine will always qualify from the semi and most of the time will go top 10 (only Russia missed top 10 this year for example - but finished 11th).  So if we go back to the 2004-2007 way  - BIG 4 + TOP 10 SCORERS (outside the big 4) + 10 QUALIFIERS FROM SEMI.  So that would mean - Turkey, Romania, Denmark, Azerbaijan, Belgium, Armenia, Greece, Georgia, Ukraine and Russia would be pre-qualified along with Germany, Spain, France & UK....but the 2007 Semi with 28 songs was too long....which is why they made it into 2 semis.

That's not a good idea. The reason that there are two semi-finals is because of the unfair results of the semi-final in 2007.

Going back to 1 semi would be just silly. It really brings down the possible level of the final with a grand total of 14 songs (instead of just 5) that have gotten there without any quality/popularity filter at all. I'd like to reduce the possibilities of having a Leto Svet in the final, thank you very much.

Why should Turkey Get the Wild Card though? Why can't they add one more country to Big 5 . Maybe Russia , Greece , Ukraine , or Turkey .

Because they are the highest ranked non-directly qualified to the final country?

I mean, it's supposed to be the standard procedure, ain't it?, that's what they have done in 2004 when 2 Big 4 countries were in the top 10, and that's what they did in 2006 when S&M left the competition, they gave their places to the next country, and in this case, that's Turkey.

Absolutely.  In 04 Spain & Germany both finished top 10 so Russia & Malta qualified directly to the 05 final,  In 06 when S&M withdrew Croatia took their place directly into the final.  Therefore it's only fair that the place of the "hosts" goes to the highest placed country.

As to making it a Big 5 - I don't think so.  There's enough problems with the big 4 pre-qualifying without making it 5 countries who can send any old rubbish and get in the final (oh wait Russia and Greece do that anyway  )

I absolutely agree that if EBU wants to be consistent with itself, they should give that free spot for Turkey

but the thing is, this 5th spot goes for the home country just so that EBU makes sure there are a lot of people in the stadium to cheer for its song.. Since a BIG 4 won they don't have to worry about that.. I don't think it's a problem if we get only 4 qualified countries for the final, and 20 qualifying through the semifinales.
