Eurovision Song Contest 2002, Tallinn, Estonia

EUROVISION SONG CONTEST 2002, TALLINN, ESTONIA

After speculation as to whether the Estonian broadcaster could afford to hold it, the contest moved to a country in the former Soviet Union for the first time.  As one Baltic nation held the contest another wins it.  Latvia only gained entry to the contest after the Portuguese had declined to take part.  Constantinos Christoforiou returned for Cyprus, this time as part of boy-band One, 6 years after he first took part.  He would return again 3 years later.  Karolina Goceva represented Macedonia and would return 5 years later.  After being a backing vocalist for Sweden in 1999 and Malta in 2000, Sahlene represented the home nation.  Corinna May represented Germany.  She'd been chosen to represent Germany in 1999 but her song was disqualified.  Monica Anghel was half of the Romanian duo.  She was Romania's representative in 1996 but that song did not make it through the qualifying round.  The Slovenian entry was the most controversial of the evening being performed by 3 men dressed as female air hostesses.  The voting was close throughout between Malta and Latvia.  Malta held a slender lead for almost half of the voting.  After the Swiss votes Latvia took the lead and held it until the end.  With only one country left to vote Latvia held a 3 point lead over the Maltese.  The last country to vote was Lithuania who gave Malta 3 points to tie the score.  Surely they wouldn't ignore their neighbours Latvia.  They didn't and gave them 12.  The win owed as much to performance as to the song.  Marie N had 3 costume changes during the performance.

Lovely women and a beautiful song!  ;)

i can't concieve anything else but France as the 2002 winner.. a lovely girl (I talked to her once :P) and a smash of a ballad, an amazing entry really!

before esc I had Latvia as a runner-up to France and Turkey third.. people called me crazy. Everyone hated Latvia no one had it high in its prediction. When it won I was so proud and happy. I still have the same top 3 now!

Couldn't agree more.  Il faut du temps is so far ahead of the rest of the field in this contest that I barely even remember my #2.

I think 2002 was the first time that a real performance gave somebody the win.  Obviously performance had been important previously but it was Marie's performance that caught people's attention rather than the song.

you're right.. it's true that Dana, Charlotte, Olsen's, or Dave & Tanel had all made flawless performances, but nothing outstanding and the songs always could have supported most anything.. whereas Marie definitely needed the performance to win! And since then it almost never stopped, mostly in 2003, 2004 and 2005 where big performances each time helped to beat the big ballad that came second! In 2006 it wasn't as much the performance was it was the costumes, the scenery, the entire entry as a whole.. And then 2007 came to prove us "something else" could win (not in English, a ballad, etc.) but 2008 came to destroy all that. Now we're up to the big unknown of juries!

Absolutely.  2007 was a weird one wasn't it...but it was nice to see something that wasn't performance based winning again...just a shame that it was only a one-off thanks to Diva Bilan

 8)

And I didn't know - until 2 days ago, while bumbling around youtube- that Laura entered again  :o a few yrs later. I think Wikipedia tells me that she came 4th in your National Final, with Take A Chance.
Ooooh I must go back to Wiki and see who you (yes you Niko, and your fellow voters) sent instead....

It was Hanna - Leave Me Alone. Hmm yes she was very good too.
I prefer Laura though.
