ESTONIA 2011 || Getter Jaani - Rockefeller Street
« on: January 23, 2011, 09:15:48 PM »
As the year moves on, many countries start showing out their big guns for the year. Let’s say this right away, countries depend on the level quality sent to them. Unless they go for an internal selection (in which case and in this case only can they bring big names to the Eurovision stage, except in Scandinavia), the countries are doomed to go for whatever they are given. Latvia for instance can have a great NF one year and a terrible year the following year (and to say the least, 2010 is going to be terrible for them). As expectations are growing around Sweden’s Melodifestivalen again (each of its single news land on us like a big bomb), as year after year people complain on the actual level in the bigger NF like Norway forgetting that in the long run, this is still going to be among the better NF, everyone forgets that on the official home page of Eesti Laul promo videos are being posted, songs are being released.

Why Estonia? Because, if we put aside the very strong Austrian line-up that may very well be destroyed by the choice of a sms pre-selection for the live show, if we put aside that Sweden will always bring that much more hype because of the big guns willing to take part (not all NF can pride themselves of a former esc winner participating, and even Ireland 2010 wasn’ t that big a deal because Niamh was a sure winner there), there’s going to be the best NF ever in Tallinn this year. ‘Ever’ might be a strong word, after all the 2010 NF was already superb but it’s the one to beat, and bringing twice as much songs is an obvious sign that ETV wants a smash again.

The history is now famous : Estonia was among the stronger Eastern European esc countries as they finished 5th on their second try again, then 8th, 12th, 6th, 4th, 1st and 3rd… After an unfair bad result, Estonia left the esc finale and made a return only once. Basically the country was doing it all right, and then not at all, but truly in 2004 it’s not just semi finals that changed esc, it was the whole style of the contest that started to move towards more modern entries. As Estonia could almost make it in 2004 due to the appeal of alternative entries, the 2005, 2006 and 2007 entries were all very dated pop tracks, with very poor and styleless performances. 2008 was a turn for the worst as Estonia gave in to joke entry. Their NF was definitely rotten from inside as little entries were really interesting. Whereas in 2003 an international jury picked the marvelous “Eighties coming back” which should have made a top 3 result in all fairness, the televoting lead to mainstream or joke winners. So ETV made a difficult decision, which back then most people could have thought crazy. It turned out to make Estonia the most important esc country today.

Euro Laul (basically “the song for Europe”) became Eesti Laul (“the song for Estonia”) : when Sweden keeps bringing more and more international juries to its Melodifestivalen, Estonia has decided to keep it inside the country. Why this opportunity should remain a one time thing for Europe who will most of the time ignore it anyway after watching 3 mns of it? This opportunity should be about celebrating Estonia’s music scene and see what Estonians can discover among the artists that are willing to come forward : both Urban Symphony and Robin Jukhental made it to huge fame and signed contracts (with Universal) in their country. While the results are disappointing (both of them should have made top 2, battling France in 2009 and Turkey in 2010 for the victory), the commentators are definitely getting more and more positive about these songs that are beyond the Eurovision level and actual music. Rufus Wainwright was in Norway during Eurovision and he refused to meet with most delegations but accepted to meet Estonia’s hopeful. It’s none of our business to know how this all was organized but the symbol is definitely there.

The very strong line-up of Eesti Laul 2009 will see its successor double the size. 20 songs, many feared that this would leave room for moderate, mainstream candidates. Rest asurred that if Tiiu Kiik one of last year’s best entry (but disappointing live) was only in the alternative list, it’s because they did not go for mainstream but because there were, simply, better songs. One regret: Robin can’t defend its title as his latest song, “Man on the radio” is among his stronger work, and his album, very electro pop deserves to be better known than by its only balladish song “Siren”.

As almost all songs are known (three exceptions : Ithaka Maria, Uku Suviste & Jaan Pehk), it’s easy to compare to what we already know (terrible line-up in Latvia, interestingly naive in Iceland, fair but typical in Norway, and the any bad NF due to Internet voting in Switzerland, Belgium…) and what we can expect and say it : Estonia will not match any competition this year again and easily walk with the best NF title. Outloudz just recently released song “I wanna meet Bob Dylan” might also be notice as one of the strongest songs of the entire year so far, while Sopruse Puiestee & Merili Varik, MID and Ans. Andur have three excellent songs, just excellent. Mayonesa, Mimicry, Shirubi Ikazuchi, Tiiu Kiik, Getter Jaani and mostly Meister ja Mari have good songs which could easily be the best entry in many other NF.

Out already are 8 promo videos here (official ETV site : http://eestilaul.err.ee/videod ) and check out a summary of all songs released so far here (Estonian fan site : http://eurovisioon.ee/eng/eurolaul.php?id=2011 ). It’s down to Sweden to compete with them, as most all the oher amazing 2011 esc songs will either come from internal selection or a surprise “one song only” from an average or poor NF. The strongest line-up is due to music only, to trying to promote a music scene and to caring to give a good simple show.

This is a very subjective editorial but it’s meant to create a debate and to celebrate  a very great NF totally overlooked everywhere else in the Internet (not a word is said on the release of promo videos).

My editorial on Estonia was published originally here : http://eurovisiontimes.wordpress.com/2011/01/20/editorial-%E2%80%98estonia-up-there-again%E2%80%99/

i really like the line up of this final myself. the variety and modernity makes it very appealing. my personal favorite that i am falling in love with is Sopruse Puiestee & Merili Varik. I love Sopruse voice tone and the contrast with Merli's. it rolls along musically with quick duet exchanges rather than long periods where only one singer sings and then join in the chorus. it's probably the most played nf song on my ipod currently.  :)

Looks I've got a little different music taste and I don't like most of the songs from my, Estonian NF.

I like:
Rockefeller Street - Getter Jaani
Something in this song, wanna put me makes to listen it again and again. Problably the refrain. I'm sure it will do great in charts even if this don't get in Germany.

Jagatud Öö - Uku Suviste
I love the sound of this music. Only thing what here looks a little weird to me are these lyrics. :D I'm Estonian and I don't get much these. I think I need to think more about them.

And not sure about
Ithaka Maria song - its like half really good and other half not. Don't like much the refrain, or the refrain is 50% good but I wish there should have some other words too than Hopa'pe-rei! :D
Victoria - I firstly liked that song really much. But after some listening it sounds so nonsense. These words, this music. And I'm not sure this will do good in Düsseldorf.
Noorkuu - Thats great, but I'm very worried about these high notes in live. I thought that here will come an acapella, but I dont know if sadly or not, came song like this. Nice job from them.

There is something I like in this song, but that "All right - all right, let's go, let's go" part I really dislike.  :-[

Not sure about this one.  It has some nice parts to it but there's also parts of it that are quite messy
