Eurovision Song Contest 2007, Helsinki, Finland (Final)
« on: June 16, 2007, 10:51:19 PM »
EUROVISION SONG CONTEST 2007, HELSINKI, FINLAND (FINAL)

The final was held again 2 days after the semi-final.  Newcomers to the final were Georgia (making their debut in the contest), Belarus (at their 4th attempt), Bulgaria (at their 3rd attempt) and Serbia (making their debut as an independant country).  Macedonia, having qualified for the final for the 4th consecutive time, were the only country in the final with a returning artist, Karolina Gocheva.  Slovenia on the other hand finally made the final on their 4th attempt.  Ukraine had the main talking point of the contest with the drag act Verka Serduchka.  The Big 4 all wanted to improve their poor finishes of recent years.  Once again Germany faired best but still finished a distant 19th.  Spain avoided finishing in the bottom 4 for the 3rd consecutive year by finishing 20th.  France weren't so lucky finishing 22nd for the 2nd consecutive year (as they had finished 23rd in 2005 it has been a bad few years for France).  It looked for a long time that the United Kingdom would finish on 0 points again, but 7 points from Ireland and a truly bizarre 12 from Malta saved them from it, but not from finishing in the bottom 3 again. For the 2nd year running the Albanian votes saved a country from scoring 0 points.  This time the lucky recipients were Ireland. The voting was fairly close but Serbia were never really challenged greatly.   Serbia officially won on their debut but the question remains - was it really their debut having appeared before with Montenegro.

i gave 5pts to people #1, 4pts to #2.. and then i gave -1 to people's 20th, -2 to 21th and so on

surprisingly there is ONE country that has been mentioned by EVERYONE and that country is the United-Kingdom (Ukraine's been mentioned by everyone except ONE person) ; and one country has never been mentioned out of the 21 of the final, and that country is FYROMacedonia.. here are the results - without my own votes of course

Serbia 13 (4+3+3+3)
Hungary 12 (5+5+5+1 -4)
Bulgaria 12 (5+4+3)
Finland 11 (5+4+2)
France 10 (4+4+3+1 -2)
Lithuania 8 (5+2+1)
Slovenia 8 (5+4+2+2 -5)
Bosnia-Herzegovina 8 (5+3+1 -1)
Georgia 5 (3+2)
Romania 4 (3+1)
Moldova 3 (2+1)
Macedonia 0
Germany -3 (-3)
Latvia -3 (-3)
Armenia -5 (4 -4-5)
Belarus -5 (-5)
Greece -5 (-3-2)
Sweden -6 (1 -3-4)
Spain -6 (2 -5-1)
Russia -6 (-3-2-1)
United-Kingdom -8 (4 -4-2-2-1-1-1-1)
Ireland -8 (-5-3)
Turkey -11 (-5-4-2)
Ukraine -18 (2 -5-5-4-3-2-1)

HERE ARE MY RANKINGS of the 42 ENTRIES to the Eurovision Song Contest 2007

42nd : Turkey - Shake it up shekerim - Kenan DoÄŸulu : 000/100
(0*3 + 0*3 + 0*2 + 0*1 + 0*1)
What to do of a song that doesn't have a melody or a message, sung by an ugly guy who can't dance or song? Well, last of course!

41st : Russia - Song #1 - Serebro : 006/100
(1*3 + 0*3 + 1*2 + 0*1 + 1*1)
yeah so actually this is typically the modern song.. but just the whole idea of having three whores on stage shaking their butt saying that it tastes good is definitely not for me and a disgraceful esc entry.

40th : Ukraine - Dancing - Verka Serduchka : 007/100
(1*3 + 0*3 + 0*2 + 2*1 + 2*1)
There is a fine line between funny songs and joke songs. This is definitely a "joke" entry and I'm quite against them if they're not really well done so that they actually have a point. Here there's nothing really except a fat fake silver woman shaking the ass of a fat real golden woman. I was so afraid it would win I found myself hoping for "Molitva" to win when it was down to these two..

39th : Poland - Time to party - The Jet set : 017/100
(2*3 + 1*3 + 3*2 + 2*1 + 0*1)
This just isn't my type of music or entry. I'm not into club-type songs and having a blondie showing off her panties.. just couldn't do it for me, and the direction they went for was totally off.

38th : United-Kingdom - Flying the flag for you - Scooch : 018/100
(2*3 + 1*3 + 2*2 + 3*1 + 2*1)
The brits just love it cheesy. It shows in their votings (i mean 10 to latvia 08..) and obviously that's what they sent this time. Cheesy jokes "and blow" cheesy tune, cheesy performance, man that's what kids do to show off planes. Definitely a shame to a country with much amazing music, but as France or other countries, Uk's just not into esc anymore, how sad..

Thank you Morgan!  :)

Here comes my reactions:

Turkey: This song is not my last one, but not in my top 30 either. This is one of the worst Turkish ESC entries ever (I usually like them), but not as bad as for example Opera. Still, there is something nice in this song, which can't be said about my deadlast song of ESC 2007, which is

Russia:
A horrible crap song and I don't want to put my energy for describing anything more about this real horror.  :ack:

Ukraine: First I HATED  it, then I HATED it, now I only hate it - just like most of the other joke songs. These kind of songs are those which give Eurovision haters more fuel for expressing their hate.

Poland: Poland has been all the time one of those ESC countries, which songs I have disliked more or less every year. The only Polish songs which I have so far liked are 1996 and 2006, but others are really bad. About 2007 song, I liked the first 2 tunes, but as soon as the song itself began, I noticed that Poland would be once again one of my bottom songs. Anyway, the gap between my last (= Russia) and this song is huge.

UK: What has happened to UK? Why is it sending nowadays only bad or even worse songs to ESC?  :-[ Does someone in BBC or among televoters really believe, that this kind of songs could do well in ESC?  :(  Ian, can you please explain it?  :-[  Oh and by the way, Morgan - have you heard the moonlight remix version of this song? It is really wonderful.  :)

OK an explanation as I see it.

Eurovision has a really bad reputation in the UK.  Many see it as the largest gathering of gays in Europe.  It's seen as cheesy, kitsch, camp and a monument to bad taste - much of this opinion has been fed to the UK viewing public by Sir Terry Wogan.  With this in mind it's hardly surprising that the UK televoters chose the cheesiest, campest, kitschest song in the selection which in 2007 Scooch most certainly ticked every box.  I also remember during the NF one of the panel of judges (I think it was John Barrowman) saying about Scooch that it's exactly what ESC is about - when clearly it isn't

Obviously not all UK ESC fans are this narrow-minded and some of us do actually enjoy the contest and some of the great music it's produced.

Thank you Ian about the very sincere, honest and good answer.  :)

People used to have in Finland quite similar attitude towards ESC until Lordi won - after that people have been taking ESC more seriously.  ;)

But UK has hope as long as there are ESC fans like you in UK.

TOP 5:
1. Bosnia & Herzegovina - For me this was really a pleasure. Excepting her dress, all was perfect. Pity it opened the contest. Was a song for my heart.
2. Ukraine - I usually don't like the "jokes" at ESC, but this song was really catchy, very original. Was my favorite from the begining.
3. Moldova - A great voice for a beautiful woman. I would like to see her representing my country now.
4. Macedonia - I liked the stage and the normality of the song. The Normality is an exception in our days.  :P
5. Hungary - a song who was in my bottom before to see the performance. Magdi has a special voice.

BOTTOM 5:
20. Latvia - I liked it in the begining, but something missed on the stage.
21. Sweden - where was Sweden this year? Ah, Ark! And it really won Melodiefestivalen?
22. Lithuania - in the begining was similar with Hungary for me, only that Lithuania didn't have a so special voice and also the show was zero. And now we can see how important is to have a good mind for a great show and self-assurance.
23. United Kingdom - was saved by Ireland. It was the last in my top from the begining. It was a comedy for me, even if they didn't try to make a comedy.  :ack:
24. Ireland - I knew this will be bad, but I didn't expected to be so bad for my ears.  :ack:

I have to confess that I'm shocked to see "that" number 2 in your ranking.
Hello Adrian, Bucharest calling  ... is that you ?  :P

I didn't notice Hungary much before the esc week either, but after esc I knew that Magdi's song will never leave my Top 5 of 2007 again.

I love seeing Moldova so high in your ranking. For the first time in history my favorite Moldovan  artist - not so known in Romania- won the Moldovan NF. I remember that we had a topic "Who would you like to represent Moldova at esc in Finland"  on baby escforum and I was saying that I would love to see Natalia at ESC (no one knew who she was). We had no idea that she was actually going to give it a go, not to mention win the Moldovan NF.

That idea crossed my mind as well  ... what if Natalia would represent Romania at esc one day? Will Romania ever be ready to support a serious artist again (after this year's masquerade) ? Should we ask Natalia and see what she thinks about it ?
