If you forced me to take one qualifier out of all ten of those, I would without a doubt take Russia. Good lord, that performance was easily one of the worse of the night and he truly came off as annoying.

Still, mostly awesome qualifiers, I'm ecstatic about my lovely Switzerland qualifying, and have other members of my top ten like Serbia, Iceland and Finland pass as well is a kind of surprise. An awesome one, mind you.

Sorry for not being nationalistic as most of you are, but this is still a song contest for me not a war of independence or something.

And this is the first time in many years almost all great singers went thorugh. Albania was a casualty in some way, but I guess she just overdid it.

Sorry if the irony wasn't as obvious as it should be but I guess you're right ... people do act like the world is ending unexpectedly or something on various esc forums. I fail to remember when it last happend here though.  :)

The Turkish entry was a decent one this year, maybe too decent this time around.

I'd agree that our rocker grandpas were a little better than Russia, Azerbaijan and maybe Georgia. But when it was down to the last envelope I cheered for Iceland crazily in front of my television. It was such a perfect performance (which literally brought some tears to my eyes, first time in this contest for at least 15 years or so) that they simply couldn't and shouldn't have failed. And luckily they didn't. With this great draw I'm expecting for them a Top Ten position in the final now.

I'm really surprised that Turkey and Armenia didn't qualify, especially Armenia.

Poland, Norway and Albania deserved to qualify imo, but I'm happy that Serbia, Switzerland and Finland have reached the final.

I am very very happy for the results.   :clappy:   :sing:

When 7 finalists were revealed, I started being sad because I was sure that Finland wouldn't qualify, so I took my tea cuo, tea pot and tea cloth back to kitchen. But when I came back to living room, the first thing I heard was Finland!  :D You can just imagine how happy I was!

Anyway, I will now post the semifinal 1 videos of the 10 qualifiers.  ;)

Best results EVER!!!!! No Armenia! No Turkey!  :jumping:

I must say that I was not utterly surprised that Turkey and Armenia were left out of the final. The countries, where are maybe the biggest Turkish and Armenian populations outside (for example France, Germany, The Netherlands and Belgium), couldn't vote in this semifinal. I would also love to say here that Armenian song was really horrible, according to my taste. It shared the last place in my yesterday's ranking list which was totally based only in the semifinal show.

I guessed 9/10 right last night, which was the best guess I have ever done. I only would have left Georgia out (which was nearly as bad as Armenia and Croatia) and changed it to Malta, which was surprisingly good last night, being my nr 7.  ;)

Yesterday's results make semifinal 2 results even more interesting and it will be very difficult to predict them today.  :goodjob:

Well there you go - that was a lot more entertaining than I was actually expecting considering the song quality in this semi wasn't as good as in the other IMO.

Here's my quick review of the performances

1. Poland - very disappointing vocal.  I thought it was one of the stronger songs in the semi but after that performance no surprise at it's failure to qualify.
2. Norway - she didn't improve any from her NF performance vocally which ultimately led to her downfall
3. Albania - this song has grown on me a lot recently but I think Aurela overdid it vocally.
4. Armenia - shocking song, shocking performance and got exactly what it deserved
5. Turkey - it's a decent song...but the performance lacked any punch which a song like this needs.
6. Serbia - it's a sweet song and she performed it very well indeed.  Not surprised at all at it's qualification
7. Russia - the introduction is awful.  Alex was obviously very nervous and you could see him visibly shaking.  OK the song isn't the best but only a fool would bet against a top 10 result for this
8. Switzerland - one of the major surprises of the night for me.  The song works so much better live than in the studio version - thanks mainly to Anna's charming personality on stage
9. Georgia - the "rock" voters were only ever going to vote for one song and this one completely blew Turkey out of the water.
10. Finland - listen to that live performance then listen to the CD version...you won't be able to spot the difference.  Superb performance from Axel
11. Malta - dated song and the first thing that came to mind during the performance was - how gay is this guy?  This had last place written all over it...if it hadn't been for
12. San Marino - considering Senit's experience I thought the vocal was shaky.  The song, whilst rather nice, was never going to attract voters.  Challenging Malta for last place.
13. Croatia - vocally she was dreadful - probably the worst of the night.  The dress changes were great but they couldn't make up for an ordinary song and a woeful vocal
14. Iceland - SENSATIONAL.  A lovely lovely song and a great performance.  Absolutely deserved it's qualification...and the late draw may well help them in the final
15. Hungary - I'm finally getting this song - but not as a winner.  Her vocal isn't quite strong enough to be a winner but it will do well
16. Portugal - an absolute mess.  It's all well and good trying to deliver a political message in a satirical style - but doing that message needed to be more accessible to the voting public
17. Lithuania - without a shadow of a doubt the best vocal performance of the night for me (which considering how I praised the Finnish entry is quite an achievement).  I wrote during the performance that I hope she got the same appreciation as the Portuguese girl got last year and I was happy she did.  The song is still a little too Disney though
18. Azerbaijan - an insipid song sung by two performers with as much charisma together as a cauliflower and a cat.  The fact this qualified (and may even have won the semi) was the major down for me.  Even the part at the end where he looks longingly in her eyes it looked like she didn't want to be there.
19. Greece - I've been saying for the last month that it needed more Loukas and less Mike....and as soon as Mike opened his mouth I knew I was right.  It did seem to have a bit more Loukas (which is no bad thing :P).
