Well we already know which ones we have in common thanks to my Facebook album :P.  There's a couple in that 1956 to 1976 list I will comment on though

Your first comment on my album covered 1956 to 1960 where we had 1 in common (1958)....all of your other winners are my runners-up

1965 - I've never seen the attraction to that song but I know how you feel about Gainsbourg's songs so it's no surprise to see it topping your charts

1967 - Really don't get that one at all

1971 - My number 2 of 1971 - a forgotten masterpiece

1972 - I really don't see how anyone can have anything other than Austria winning in 72 - it's light years ahead of any other song in that contest.

1973-1976 - no complaints there all great songs.

im not surprised because the oldies are good but there are better songs definitely, many of your favorites were also close to my top list (dk 57, net 59)

65 the song is one of the most modern of the 60s, incredible tune, great lyrics and iconic singer here
67 love the moody jazz tune, in a great year (slovenia, france, uk, spain, monaco and portugal are all amazing too)
71-72 austria was so flat out amazing back then, 76, 78, 79 80 are all great too

i added the first victories of 4 southern esc countries 73-76 :)

Reading your winners was very exciting and interesting - as always.  :)

First of all, the biggest feeling of happiness gave me your winner of 1976!  Actually I like all your winners more or less, except 2 songs, which I don't hate though. They are Sweden 1999 (which is not a surprise, because it is Sweden, the country which I hate and love ) and Bosnia-Herzegovina 1997, which I have never understood.  :-[

Maybe I should do a similar list of my winners!  :)

it will be very interesting to compare, i hope your list will make me as happy as my list made you (except for two songs)! i did mine because ian did his on FB and it got me interested in doing mine!

97, 98, 99 are three years without masterpieces so it's hard to chose, i went for my personal favorite among the better songs of their years (97: bosnia, malta, greece and russia ; 98: uk, finland, malta, slovakia ; 99: sweden, bosnia, estonia and lithuania)

Based on what I know of Niko and Can, I think Italy 92, France 69 and France 2002 are the only three we all four share as winners in our lists 8)

so far so good Niko, a great list i like almost every song here and knowing your taste i am not surprised but three songs i dislike

actually, i agree on everything except three songs which are actually all three my last of their years  :-\
they are: Italy 56, Germany 62 and Portugal 72 the rest i either love or only like (Swe 63 or Ire 70)

so far, Swi 58, Fra 68 & Fra 69 are three we all three agree on (I assume Ita 92 and Fra 02 will join the list, and then we gotta wait and see for Can if he does his list!)

Well we have 4 in common in that part Niko :D.  There's 3 that all 3 of us have in common so far (1958, 1968 & 1969).  A further 4 of your winners are my runners up :goodjob1:

From your list there's only a few I don't actually like.  I already mentioned 1965 in reviewing Morgan's list.  As you know I'm not a big fan of Sweden 1963 either.  1977 I've always found De malemolen to be rather old-fashioned in a very good year.

Thank you Ian! It is really great that we have so many common winner songs.  :) By the way, I have a crush on those "old-fashioned" Dutch songs.  :P

Morgan, I knew you don't like Portugal '72 but it is for me one of the best Portuguese songs. I totally love it.  Thank you for commenting.

yeah I guess I do love those, but as much as I love Bosnia 09 I prefer Estonia and France to it... then you could say I love the celtic (Norway 95, Ireland 96 and Belgium 03 are my winners, France 96 is in my all time top 10 an though them much less, I still like all others like Swe 96, Bel 99, Est 99...) And I love the electro pop (BWO, Robin Juhkental, Getter...)

I have 14 winners in common with Morgan and 13 with Ian in total. As for Niko's first 24 I agree on 7 (which is quite promising for the total). I can also confirm that France 1968 and 1969 make 4 out of 4 however "Giorgio" fails there. A more detailed analysis with each one of your lists will come later (hopefully tonight), but here is my own quick list with only countries assuming that neither of you need to be reminded which song is in question.  :P

However I must tell that with years passing by I feel that I'm becoming more and more conservative in my taste with hardly any changes especially on the top of the lists. So those of you who know my taste won't be surprised even a bit with my "new" list.

First of all I guess I miscalculated the winners in my previous post, because now it seems that we have 15 winners in common Morgan. They are from 1957, 1960, 1961, 1963, 1966, 1968, 1969, 1976, 1977, 1983, 1986, 1987, 1992, 2002 and 2009.

Your winners from 1984, 1985, 1999 and 2008 are my runners-up from their years and six of them (1958, 1962, 1973, 1975, 1991 and 2006) are my second runners-up.

A total of 33 of your winners are in my top five of their respective years (1959, 1978, 1980, 1989 and 1995 are #4 in my lists while 1965, 1990 and 2000 are #5).

As for the remaining 22; 8 of them (1956, 1964, 1967, 1970, 1981, 1994, 1996, 1998) are top ten songs for me which I moderately like in most cases. However I must underline that I find "Where Are You" terribly overrated and it's in my  top ten only because I quite dislike 1998 as a whole unlike most other fans. On the other hand there are some songs among your winners that cannot make my top ten but I still enjoy on various degrees, I can list 1971, 1988, 2005 and 2010 under this file.

So there are only 10 winners of yours that I don't like at all. Finland 1979 is a totally ordinary song to me which I don't really dislike, but don't find any attractive either except for the magnificent singers excellent vocals. Israel 1974 was a song I hated for quite a while but then it turned out that I hated only the performance because I found a Turkish cover of the song by a solo female act and instantly loved it. As for the original I'm still not a big fan. Similar story with Bosnia-Herzegovina '93 and Turkey '04. I completely hated them in their respective years, but in time they slowly grew on me just to get out of the hate zone.

And that brings us to the 6 I really dislike. As for Belgium 2003 I'd already stated my case in the 2011 thread: I admit that it's a song full of originality and class but I cannot bring myself to enjoy it no matter how hard I try. A somewhat similar case is Georgia 2007 even though I'm not really sure that it has the same (or close) quality as "Sanomi". I can appreciate the idea behind it and the fact that the song really doesn't sound quite like anything we hear in this contest, I don't find the result satisfying at all. For me originality doesn't necessarily mean quality and in this case I find the finished product a little too manufactured to sound original for its own good. As for Russia 2001, I find it just a poor song and that's all. I can imagine myself somewhat enjoying it in an album of similar but preferably stronger songs but on its own I don't think that it can stand still. Actually to me this one is one of the two most surprising winners in your list. (The other being a positive one in Portugal '84, yay!)

Austria 1972 is a battle I know I'd lose since each and every devoted fan except myself seems to love it unconditionally. I can of course accept that it's a song way ahead of its time and has some pretty harmonies in it. However I find that chorus so much annoying that I can barely ever listen to it up until the end. So it's just a simple "no" from me. Bosnia-Herzegovina 1997 is just a bad song no matter how you slice it. It's completely amateurish both in production and in interpretation, it's annoyingly repetitive and there's not one ounce of originality in it, so I'd really like to read how you'd defend it. And lastly Denmark 1982 is my least favorite of all your winners (still not the dead last of its year thanks to Finland), but strangely enough it makes somewhat more sense as a winner than the dreadfully dull "Goodbye" to me.

As with my rating system on a 100 points, two of your winners 1992 and 1969 are perfect 100's to me (actually these are the only two songs I rate 100/100 among all ESC songs). Bottom Five of your winners look like this in my list:

Denmark 1982: 11
Bosnia-Herzegovina: 37
Israel 1974: 49
Bosnia-Herzegovina 1993: 50
Georgia 2007: 52

By the way Morgan I still keep your full rankings from 2005 and after having a quick look at that list I realized that your winners have changed quite a lot since than. As I said at the very beginning mine have stayed mostly the same during these six years even though there have been little changes here and there constantly. One thing I first noticed was that one of your biggest guilty pleasures Greece 1988 has left the crown of its year. I'm curious where you've placed it recently. And also if it's not too much trouble I'd love to have your latest charts as well, since I keep and use this kind of things from time to time during my personal analysis of certain years or on the popularity of certain countries' entries.

Re: *UPDATED* My Eurovision Winners
« Reply #22 on: August 11, 2011, 04:12:42 AM »
Yes Can, I have a lot of excel files now: one by year, one by country, one hallf of fame for my winners, one focused on top 10 and one full ranking where i also get to rank together songs from different years and countries but having the same amount of points out of 100. You are welcomed to any of them whih interes you. I also kept your file but I will be glad to accept yours in return.

First of all, I wanted to add that I am thankful for all the time you've put into this. When I thought, hey we didn't compare winners yet, I hoped to make the forum a tad more alive, with one or two people complaining on some of my winners. Now everyone's going on with his list and comparing and it's what this forum needs. Mature intelligent and long analyis comparisons.

Second of all, we've always known that, even if we disagreed a lot for the middle songs (about from 6th to 30th), we often age on hating or loving the same songs. So the minor differences are very interesting and would mostyl reveal things about us, as for the ones we agree on, and we even all agree on, are definitely just above on a very objective level.

The French in me can't help noticing that Can, you have 9 French winners, a record (closely followed by your othre top favorite country, Italy with 7, but imo, Italy is lucky not to have lived through the horrible 00s where it too would have sent a few craps, and then Sweden at 5)... I also have France with 9 winners and I always felt bad about it. Also, the 4 we all four have in ommon are Fra 68, 69, Ita 92 and Fra 02. Hard to not notice that they are from France and Italy, these two countries again proving that, when they send wonders, everyone notices it. Another exaple, out of 15 winners in common, 9 are from these twocountries (6 France and 3 Italy). I have never doubted that a few countries, I would add Sweden, Finland and Bosnia to this list, and so far Serbia actually though it has a shorter Eurovision list, also have amazing eurovision records and when they sent amazing songs, it's quite impossible to miss. Ireland is a tougher case.

I will first comment on the 10 songs you disage from my list and then analyze yours through my point of view. Finland 1979 is a brilliant melody that hooks me instantly. Truly, 1979 is a year without masterpieces like so many (when others are packed with them) but from melody and singers alone, Finland is the closest one to being it. I also love France's lyrics and the melody is neat to say the least, Anne-Marie sells it live like no others but I have this thing with Finnish language. It's so melodic and I truly love hearing it. When it's tagged to a great melody (especially 1985!) it's a smash to me. Give it Katri Helena and you got me a winner. Similar story to Israel 74 which beats Finland by an eyelash and Turkey 04 is just above the rest in a very poor year... my second Poland and my third Lithuania are good but definitely not winner material like Athen managed to produce. Similar to "Where are you" I really don't even like it on my list but I seriously don't see anything outstanding in 1998 most songs are "nice" at best.

Two of the 10 are in my all time top 5 and they ar with no surprises, Bosnia & Herzegovina 93 & Austria 72. Both are not only very modern, but as any modern songs, ageless, classics. They have not only instant hit melody and great lives, they have incredible lyrics to go with them. They are undoubtable winners, and I strongly support 93 as a great year. Even France struggles to be in my top 10 that year. Belgium 2003 & Georgia 2007 are rightfully put togteher. They are indeed both provocative esc entries for they refuse to play the esc game. It worked both cases, bringing them results no one estimated before the contest. You're right that originality doesn't make up for anything, it's only a bonus. To me both songs are first well written songs. "Sanomi" is clearly written to the perfection to bring your intriguing typical celtic music we had for the past few years to another level. Strongly delievered (I just rewatched esc 2003 because you kept mentionning it), well sung it's got the twist of imaginative lyrics as a statement that voice can be instruments too and in such an english-dominating contest, it was also a strong statement that lyrics have a universal touch. Enough to be an untouchable winner, though Estonia, France and Turkey are also quite above the rest in this edition. As for "Visionary dream", it got me hooked way back when we first heard the song. But was very disappointed with Sopho's NF live (for those who forgot, it had a huge dress like a tent where people came in and out, typical, clichéd and ugly). She completely turned things around with an incredible powerful live, the most beautiful use of an incredible incredible incredible stage (oh dear lord I do love Helsinki's amazing hosting). I must say 2007 doesn't enchant me, only Bosnia, Sweden and Georgia interest me and I put my favor in the one most beautifully sung live and therefore original. Russia 2001 is a great soviet rock like Russia would never dare sending again (hope to be proven wrong), the song's incredible in audio and whiel I think the live is definitely under performed, it's still better performed than Bosnia to make it a win. Estonia is incredible live and saves an average ok nice going song but I can't see "Everybody"above "Lady Alpine Blue" and France is just an inch below.

So now come the big guns. Denmark 1982 is probably the last guilty pleasure of mine as a winner. I have gotten rid of a lot of only "good" or "nice" but not "great" songs that used to be winners of mine simply because I knew I was kidding myself (Finland 83 is just not better than Luxembourg that year) but 1982 is so weak. It is so weak in every way: I hate the hosting, I hate the stage, I hate the songs, I hate the results (Germany, Israel and Switzerland are in my bottom 5) it's a year that puts eurovision to a disgrace. So many poor singers, so many poor lives and not a single astonishing song. Barely even "good" ones and therefore I have the most clichéd if not bizare Irish song in my top 5. Denmark is admittedly among the better songs as an entry. The lyrics are fun, it's 80s silly stupid. So I would normally have it around 7th in any regular year. But everything is so low that it goes up and up. Next to Belgium and Spain, the other two most accomplished entries of the year, I don't see much great quality smashing it to pieces. Spain is as repetitve with the "El" than Denmark is with "Video" and Belgium has a very stupid live and a terrible French accent for anyone who knows it. So in the end, I'm down to a corner. Any of them would be a disappointing winner. So now I have resigned to accept a full subjective choice and went with the blond hot guy. At least I can be accused of faoring the hot blonde guy coz I did. I seriously did. I love Denmark, I used to be in love with a Dane, and this country deserves a second victory to my list more than Belgium and Spain. It's not the best reasons at all, but they are mine.

It's very similar to Bosnia & Herzegovina 97 for I do like the year but because of its casual simplicity all throughout. Apart from a very typical pop uk entry which would march a victory to the juries who always fell for these (and ireland too), the rest is very complicated. I like France for being so snobby and indie, close to ridicule. Close to ridicule, like Malta's attempt at celtic female high pitched voice (from "Nocturne" to "The Voice" to a hilarious title, "Let me fly" erm, you can't), Russia's diva over the top shouting brava to herself or Greece's yellow dress and ethnic entry. Did anyone else notice that Greece just always sent americanized pop entries (Charlie, Stop...) and then suddenly, after 95 and 96 discovered it could do an ethnik thing too? Ridicule, the Bosnian backings who, as I always said and I'm sure Ian or Niko will remember, look like escaped circus freaks. Did you notice the 97 televote? Yes televote, every country with televote gave Bosnia points except for the Uk. Hm. I bet that with a full televote, Bosnia would have shocked everyone with a clear top 10 result. It was so outrageously different and weird but it hooks you. Once you're done a full load of Norway singing San Francisco and Portuguese guys wearing sun glasses in the darkest atmosphere ever, you end up only remembering my top 5, Russia, Malta, France, Greece and Bosnia. I had to make a pick, and I went for the one that was the most out of place, without ever going out of line. Russia, Malta or Greece's dresses are just too much. France is over doing its typical ballad. But Bosnia has just the song of madness, everything else is decent. Did anyone notice how look alike Alma and Katrina are ? They have the same haircut and the same color-shirt black-jacket look. It's insane how similar they can be and so clichéd one is (Uk) and so cool the other manages to be (Bosnia). For backups, for the cool weird melody and for managing that so complicated we're off but we're not trick in Eurovision, Bosnia gets my prize. Plus, also, Bosnia could be my esc winner in 95, 99, 01, 07, 08 09 as well but missed by a little... Having them in 97 is also a way to have Bosnia on top for all these amazing years they kept being pushed off while mediocre but more mainstream balkan songs would score well.

We have 13 winners in common Ian and they are from 1959, 1963, 1968, 1969, 1971, 1973, 1975, 1992, 1993, 1994, 2001, 2002 and 2008.

8 of your winners are my runners-up: 1957, 1974, 1976, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1984 and 1996.

4 of them are my second runners-up: 1958, 1960, 1966 and 1990.

A total of 34 winners are in my top five of their years; 1964, 1967 and 2004 being my #4 and 1962, 1970, 1983, 1986, 1989 and 2005 being #5 of their respective years.

Among the remaining 21 songs 11 are in my top ten of their years (1956, 1965, 1977, 1982, 1985, 1988, 1995, 2000, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2011) but their indivudual significance for me vary quite a lot. Some of them (like Germany 1956 and UK 1982) barely manages to hit the top ten due to the general weakness of years and some of them just misses the cut for the top five (Spain 1995, Germany 2006 and Iceland 2009 all being my #6 just behind of my #5's with very few margins). On the other hand there are some winners in your list which narrowly miss top ten in my personal list but I still like. I think Finland 1991, Iceland 1987 and Romania 2010 should be classified in this group.

This means that there are only 7 songs among your winners I don't like at all and we've already cleared the Austria 1972 case with Morgan's list. Belgium 1978 is a song I find utterly and completely dull but of course not without a certain touch of class. In its year it's not very far from top ten but I don't really like it at all. UK 1961 is one of my pet peeves which gets on my nerves big time, still I can understand that it's perfectly a product of its time and very similar to what was hugely popular at that time in the whole world. And as for Cyprus 1997, I don't really dislike it but for a song which does nothing at all to me I've always found it to be heavily overrated.

There are only 3 songs among your winners list which I both personally dislike and cannot see the attraction even if I tried to look at them as objectively as possible. Chronogically first is Slovakia 1998. We've already talked about this one on the other forum so I won't get into the detail but I think I'll never be able to understand how anyone can ever enjoy that "song" and her singing. (Your fascination with Kate Bush might be a clue here though, at least for her singing.) Cyprus 1999 is another song which was a pre-favorite among fans but felt flat on the big night but I tend to agree with televoters rather than fans. To me it's just a painfully soulless dance song horribly performed on the night by a clearly undertalented performer. On the other hand I rarely fall for dance songs even when they are performed perfectly. And lastly another huge pet peeve of mine Portugal 2003. Since I don't find anything about this entry even a little bit appealing (not the very boring and totally forgettable song, not her goat like voice, not her "happy hooker goes to the firemen's ball" styling) I naturally cannot see how anyone like it better than the other 25 songs even if 2003 is another hugely poor year to me unlike to most fans once again.

As with Morgan my top two songs of all time "Rapsodia" and "Un jour un enfant" are my most highly rated winners of yours. The lowest five are these:

Slovakia 1998: 27
Cyprus 1999: 30
Portugal 2003: 35
Austria 1972: 54
Germany 1956: 59

By the way Ian, if you also have a sheet of your full rankings I'd appreciate so much if you could send it to me if it's not too much trouble of course.  :-[

In this list the only song I strongly dislike is "De mallemolen" while I'm not exactly crazy about "A Festa da Vida" and "Et bonjour a toi l'artiste" as well even though the latter is still at the bottom of my top ten.
