They Nearly Made It
« on: July 08, 2007, 04:46:24 PM »
Here is a list of songs that nearly made it to the ESC finals but not quite for one reason or another.  I will give a short explanation as to why they didn't make it.

2006

France - Vous, c'est nous - Virginie Pouchain

The French selection process in 2006 (similar to the Spanish one in 2007) selected the song and the singer seperately.  However when the 2 were put together the French said the song did not suit Virginie's voice so the composer was asked to compose another entry.

Serbia & Montenegro - Moja ljubavi - No Name
A farcical situation again in Beovizia 2006 which saw the Serbian band Flamingosi feat Luis win the televote.  However the Montenegrin jury members awarded so few points to the Serbian entries that No Name once again finished top having represented the country the previous year.  The country withdrew from the contest but were still able to vote.

2005

Belarus - Boys & Girls - Angelica Agurbash

The song was changed basically because Angelica didn't like it :P

Lebanon - Quand tout s'enfuit
Rumours are rife about why Lebanon withdrew.  Most of the rumours surrounded the fact that the Lebanese broadcasters could not guarantee showing the Israeli entry in it's entirety.  However the official reason for the withdrawal is for financial reasons.

2002

Lithuania - We All - B'Avarija

Disqualified as it had been released commercially before the stated EBU date.  Replaced by "Happy You" by Aivaras which finished 23rd out of 24.

1999

Bosnia & Herzegovina - Starac i more - Hari Mata Hari

Disqualified because a Finnish version of the song had been released 2 years previously

Germany - Hor den Kindern einfach zu - Corinna May
Unknown to Corinna and English version of the song had already been released.

1998

Hungary - Csak Neked! - Erika Zoltan

2 schools of thought on this one.  Firstly that Erika was heavily pregnant and was unable to make it to Birmingham.  Secondly it's also been rumoured that the song had been previously released as early as 1991.  Also strangely the Hungarian song that went to Birmingham had not appeared in the Hungarian NF.

Russia - Solnce moio - Tatiana Ovsienko
Russia used an internal selection for 1998 - despite not having qualified for the 1998 contest.

1997

Greece - An den agapissis, den tha agapissi - Dimosthenis Stringlis

Confusing one this.  This song was announced as the entry but ERT weren't happy with Dimosthenis as the singer so asked him to find another singer for his song.  He refused so ERT removed the song and sent Horepse instead - which had apparently been the first choice all along but due to some administrative error had been overlooked.

1996

There was a pre-qualifying for the 1996 contest.  30 countries had applied to take part in the 1996 contest.  Only hosts Norway were guaranteed a place in the final.  The other 29 songs went to a pre-qualifying tournament.  Juries were played a studio version of each song and were to vote accordingly.  The top 22 songs went through.  The following songs missed the cut.

23. Hungary - Fortuna - Gjon Delhusa
24. Germany - Blauer Planet - Leon
25. Denmark - Kun med dig - Martin Loft & Dorthe Andersen
26. Macedonia - Samo ti - Kaliopi Grill
26. Russia - Ya eta ya - Andrej Kosinski
28. Israel - Shalom olam - Galit Bell
29. Romania -  Ruga Pentru Pacea Lumii - Monica Anghel & Sincron

1993

1993 saw the first pre-qualifying round for ESC.  7 countries were in the pre-qualifying tournament with only 3 places in Millstreet available.  Slovenia, Croatia & Bosnia & Herzegovina took those 3 places.  The following countries finished in the lower places in the pre-qualifying.

4. Slovakia - Amnestia na neveru - Elan
5. Estonia - Muretut meelt ja suedametuld - Janika Silamaa
6. Hungary - Arva reggel - Andrea Szulak
7. Romania - Nu pleca - Dida Dragan

1992

Switzerland - Soleil, Soleil - Geraldine Olivier

Another complicated one this.  The Swiss selection process in those days was basically that the French speaking part and the German speaking part each held their own selection with the winners going into a NF.  This song was rejected by the French-Swiss...so the lyrics were rewritten and submitted to the German-Swiss where it won.  In the final it won.  However having resubmitted the song with a different lyric it broke the rules and was withdrawn and Daisy Auvray went to ESC instead.

1990

Austria - Das Beste - Duett

What an almighty mess-up this story is.  Firstly during the final the female singer collapsed on stage having not eaten properly for days.  She was completely unconscious for a while - but recovered sufficiently to perform again at the end of the NF.  They won the NF by a landslide.  However shortly afterwards it transpired that the song had been in the German NF in 1988...so it was then disqualified and Simone went to Zagreb instead.

1988

Cyprus - Thimame - Yiannis Dimitrou

Had apparently already taken part in Cypriot NF in 1984.

1979

Turkey - Seviyorum - Maria Rita Epik & 21 Peron

Withdrawn due to increasing pressure from the Arab nations as the contest was to be held in Jerusalem.  They eventually agreed to withdraw.

1978

Greece - Na kseris s'agapo - Robert Williams

Withdrawn because neither of the composers were Greek.  However in the original final Anna Vissi was tied with this song.  She didn't go to Paris either as ERT comissioned a whole new set of songs which included the eventual Greek entry - Charlie Chaplin.

1976

Germany - Der Star - Tony Marshall

This one had had a public performance prior to the German NF so broke the criteria for allowed entries to be replaced by the Les Humphries Singers.

1974

France - La vie à 25 ans - Dani

Withdrawn days before the contest due to the death of President Pompidou.  Dani watched it from the audience in Brighton apparently.

1971

Belgium - Goie morgen, goie morgen - Nicole & Hugo

Another well known one.  Nicole fell ill with jaundice just before the contest.  They were replaced by Lily Castell & Jacques Raymond.  Nicole & Hugo famously did come back 2 years later with those infamous purple catsuits and memorable dance routine.

1970

Portugal - Onde vais rio que eu canto - Sérgio Borges

Portugal held a NF in 1970 despite being one of the countries to withdraw in protest to the 1969 tied result.
