[withdrawn] ARMENIA 2012
« on: March 07, 2012, 03:19:43 PM »

On 24 February, over twenty Armenian singers signed a petition asking ARMTV to withdraw from the contest. They cited the death of an Armenian soldier who was allegedly shot by an Azerbaijani sniper a few days earlier in the violated ceasefire as a reason for their "refusal to perform in the contest." However, later the Armenian Ministry of Defense announced that the Armenian soldier was killed by a fellow Armenian soldier, and not by Azerbaijani army.  But despite that, the Armenian singers claim that Armenia should not participate this year and that they would have called for the boycott of Eurovision in Baku even if the Armenian soldier had not been killed.

ARMTV and the EBU announced on 7 March 2012 that Armenia would be withdrawing from the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest. Armenia was to compete in the first half of the second semi-final on 24 May 2012.

This is really sad. when politics get the upper hand, it is even more sad. it was said before that Armenia plans something bombastic for ESC 2012, for the possibility of maybe winning on Azerbaijani soil, so i immediately thought about System of a down, which were mentioned some years ago, or maybe even Cher, due to the trend famous ones does not afraid going to ESC like before. but politics is politics. i remember some years ago, Armenia and Azerbaijan were drawn in the same group of EURO qualification, they both couldn't agree about match hosting, so UEFA declared double 0-0 without points, and instead of taking action, ruled that in future campaigns, both countries can't be drawn in the same group. so just like in this case, once again we got politics win bigtime
