[gossips] Have they bought votes?
« on: May 19, 2013, 12:09:08 PM »
We're going to have the traditional share of gossips and assumptions after the ESC Final again.

According to eurovoix.com & 15min.lt, Azerbaijan & Russia are suspected of having bought votes.

Quote from: eurovoix.com
15min.lt have this morning come out with an extraordinary story that points towards Azerbaijan paying people to vote for them in the Eurovision final. They have this morning reported the story of students in Vilnius who were approached by two Russian men, and were payed to vote for Azerbaijan in last night’s Eurovision final. Each of the students were payed 20 Euros for each time that they voted for the specific artist.

The paper then sent a number of undercover reporters with cameras and voice recording equipment to a cafe where they would be given sim cards to vote with. At the meeting the men boasted how this was done in almost all the countries taking part in the contest and how that they did it across countries as not to cause suspicion.

Each group that is payed had five phones each and then must vote as many times as possible in the 15 minute window. After the 15 minutes a group manager then checks the number of votes sent for the country. The men went on to say that the same thing happens during the semi finals. The most interesting part is where he admitted that Azerbaijan use this technique in 15 countries, and that Russia are also involved in buying votes.

Any thoughts?

:o Is this true or once again a malevolent evil yarn which was fabricated by people who don't like those 2 songs / countries ? I think both of those songs would have gained lots of votes even without having to buy them. Something inside me tells that this can't be true.  :-\

I think you are right, Niko. If Russia would have bought votes, Belgium would have never received an 8 from Russia.

True or not, nothing can change the fact that those countries which are familiar with corruption, are ALWAYS in the final, always successful, and especially Azerbaijan, who never falls from the top 10 (and with the exception of their debut, who got 8th place, they never fall from top 5!).
anyway, i think this information, true or not, isn't important at all, because the whole ESC is fixed imo, and i guess that's the only way EBU could hold it alive. i'm personally still surprised from the Danish victory as much as i'd surprised had Finland won, but obviously for economic reasons, the EBU would prefer to grant the hosting of the event to decent countries like Sweden or Denmark rather than others who gain political votes, and indeed it's much better.

It's indeed true that Azerbaijan has a doubtful reputation when talking about corruption, but one can not deny the fact that they have sent every year a very good performer. The regime in Baku wants only the best performers to impress first of all their own population so that the regime can carry on existing. I think Azeri population is brainwashed in this way, with a good result the regime can tell them "look how good we are". They keep the attention away from every day's misery and problems people are dealing with.

But I don't think the whole ESC is fixed, nobody gave Belgium a chance before the contest (me neither because of the false singing of Roberto during the preselection), but when I saw his performance in the semi-final and final it's just great to see that a good performance is rewarded. But unfortunately it's not always the case. A lot depends also on the starting position, and if there are a lot of songs in the same style or not.

Still it's very hard to keep great scores clear....many countries got great performers, but didn't get good results. with the Azerbaijan there was nothing changed, however since the 50%-50% system introduced, some countries who enjoyed neighbor and diaspora voting, didn't enjoy it anymore, while in the other hand, it did good with some countries, for example Belgium, which totally deserved to be in the final, and got decent placing, while in 100% televoting it would be much harder.
