Ireland 2015 | Molly Sterlin - Playing With Numbers
« on: June 02, 2014, 11:31:04 PM »

Rumours were abound that Jedward could return for Ireland....but will they or will someone else represent Ireland?

Discuss the Irish selection in this thread

I watched our selection of course !  :P
It was tacked onto the crappy Late Late Show, in a tiny studio, with a wooden host who has zero in the contest. :irked:

We had a medley performed by lovely Niamh Kavanagh, Paul Harrington, and awful Linda Martin :ack:. Bizarrely , the medley was made up of songs from 4 UK entries and a Swedish entry. Nimahs version of Puppet on A String was excellent (even though I hate the song), but the rest wasn't great.

And Congratulations was performed as a duet by Niamh with Phil Coulter. Their voices don't go together at all.  :talktothehand:

And there was a cringeworthy sing song segment of more old songs.  :tongue1:
There were no covers of Euphoria or Satellite or Fairytale or even Fly On The Wings of Love. When Ireland thinks of Eurovision, it's all about the much older songs apparently.

As for our five acts fighting it out for the right to represent Ireland in 2015 ...

Song 1 - the rap one.
Hmmm. You either like rap or you don't. I don't. The  parts from the backing vocalists was ok, but the rap parts were hideous.

Song 2 - the charlie mcgettigan penned one.
I hate the title - Anyone Got A Shoulder ?
Everyone's got a shoulder. I've got two ! It should be called Anyone Got A Shoulder I Could Cry On ! It bugged me that the word 'On' wasn't included in the song, it made more sense to include it, and it wouldn't hurt the music. Anyway, the song was simple and old fashioned, but I like it.  Sweet voice. For staging, I would have had her alone under a spotlight, everything else in darkness.

Song 3 - the Swedish one
Having heard the songs online, ahead of the contest - this was my favourite by far. I don't mind that's she's not Irish, but I do think the songwriters should be from Ireland. The vocal was fine, the staging not so great. It suffered by being in a tiny studio. On a big stage, strutting about, with a wind machine at the keychange, it could've been great. Still, I televoted for it repeatedly.

song 4 - the bookies favourite
This one got most of the publicity, magazine interviews etc, off the back of being robbed by Jedward a few yrs ago. Sadly, this song is not in the same league as her previous eurosong entry. The recording sounds like 3 minutes of someone stamping on her foot, and the live version was painful.

song 5 - the (i can't believe she's only) 16 yr old
Very mature, very talented, very professional, but the song is just ok. It starts well, but doesn't go up a notch. It's a grower.

So, I voted for song three, but had a feeling it would be between song 2 and song 5. I'd rather have song 2, but am actually ok with us having song 5.
I think song 2 (or 3) had a chance of reaching the final at ESC, but songs 5.....I'm not so sure. We'll have to wait and see who she's up against.

And so endeth my review.

As long as it's not Jedward it's got to be reasonable, surely :D?

Thanks for the review.  I'll see if I can track some of these down to listen to them for myself, although I know right now that I'll be in agreement with you about the rap song.

Well they already chose the song number 5

It is the most boringest song ever in my opinion

But one day the old lovers long for more
Dreams and desires of another youth
And they leave their families, betray their friends
They don't want advice about how to be happy

It's a nice song, but it's all a bit 'samey'.  There needed to be a strong key change somewhere, and a bit more passion.  For a ballad type song it's just not dramatic enough in my opinion.

A month has passed, and I haven't heard our entry on the radio once yet !

Now that all countries have made their choices - and it's quite ballad heavy - it makes me wish even more that we'd selected the Swedish girl with the uptempto song !
