Belgium 2008 - Ishtar - U julissi na jalini
« on: August 15, 2007, 10:00:56 PM »

BELGIUM 2008

Hello everyone and welcome to the thread where we discuss who should represent this little country in Belgrade 2008!
I'll try to keep you up-to-date every now and then with some interesting news about our national selection.

Something interesting:
* Usually the Walloons do better than the Flemish people in ESC. But since the introduction of the semifinals, Kate Ryan (flemish representative for ESC2006) got the best Belgian placing (12th with 69 points)*

Who do you want to see in our National Final?

As with every country I only have 2 wishes

1) someone who can sing live
2) someone who can perform live

Kate Ryan could do the first but not the 2nd. The KMGs could do the 2nd but not the 1st.  Nuno could do both but had a bad song.  Get those 2 sorted with a decent song and a place in the final should not be beyond your grasp :)

That's what I said - she can SING live she just didn't perform in Athens - it was static and lacked any charm or charisma at all - but vocally she was fine.

Oh... Eurosong! The selection with fantastic organization & fantastic songs & fantastically AWFUL results!

Well, it's good as long as the results don't come . Still have some songs of 06 in my pc and even one of them in my i.pod (lovely Zenna of course    )

Kate Ryan did sing well Dan, problem is, she lacked:

a) Any charisma whatsoever
b) A song

It wasn't ever a good schlager :eyepop:, and the franglais was really irritating.

Flemish broadcaster VRT has received no less than 450 entries for Eurosong 2008, the Belgian selection for the Eurovision Song Contest. Last night, all entries for next year's Belgian Eurovision Song Contest selections should have arrived at Flemish broadcaster VRT. After the deadline, VRT counted 450 songs, which were submitted by about 400 different artists, Het Nieuwsblad reported this morning.

After 360 entries in 2004 and 321 in 2006, the number of songs submitted has increased dramatically. This can probably be explained by the fact that the duration of the submission period, which was launched on 24th April, lasted twice as long as in 2006, partner website www.belgovision.com reports.

The potential participant field for Eurosong 2008 is a mixture of well-known Flemish singers and newcomers. Among the submitted songs are many international compositions: Songwriters from the Netherlands, France, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Malta, Sweden among and other countries make a bid in the Belgian selection for the Eurovision Song Contest 2008.

VRT will now select 28 out of the 450 submitted songs to be presented in four heats, starting Sunday 27th January. Half of the songs will be chosen for the two semi finals and again half of them for the national final on 9th March.

Dana and Daisy Nieddu- Shut down the heatmachine
Twin sisters Dana and Daisy Nieddu took part in the first edition of Eurosong for Kids in 2003 with Plezier Voor Twee. Now they are back in Eurosong with a song- message to stop the global warming, written by Marc Paelinck, who also wrote the Eurovision Song Contest entries Sister and 1 Life, performed by Sergio and Xandee in 2002 and 2004 respectively. For the production of the song, Marc Paelinck got a helping hand from Michael Garvin, a top producer who wrote for Steps and Cher and scored a world hit with his song Waiting for tonight, performed by Jennifer Lopez.

Katy Satyn- Magical sensation
"The song is a mix of Irish and Swedish folk music, a little bit of opera and dance beats," says Stina Engelbrecht, singer and songwriter of Sarek, who teamed up with her husband Jens Engelbrecht, Sarek's flute player G

Here's what the newspapers say about our preselection!

Please note that the songs aren't available yet for us to hear!

Round 1

. Katy Satyn: Not enough body to survive in the competition, catchy, but that's the only good thing.
. Raeven: We don't like this Sugababes-wannabe's
. Brahim: Barhim won't get closer to Stevie Wonder with this (I wonder what they mean with that....)
. Eva Darche: Anouk & Celine Dion should stay away from each other, as much as possible.
. Femme Fatale: The music on the background, the show on front. This works, look at Lordi!

Round 2

. Kenza: Nice R&B song, but Flanders wouldn't like it.
. E.F.R.: No-nonsense pop that's easy to listen to.
. Ishtar: The Dark Horse from Eurosong 2008.
. Esther: Her popsong with balls will score bigtime! (popsong with balls = very strong song)
. Tanja Dexters: Will be eliminated immediately, but will be a hit in the gaybars.

Round 3

. Ellis T: Sounds like it's made between the soup & potatoes (flemish expression which means, very quickly) The audience isn't ready for Jump-music
. Tabitha Cycon: Right voice, wrong song.
. Di Bono: A song that could really surprise us! Pop with some Electro!
. Nelson: Reminds us of Boyz2Men and the 90's are a long time ago!
. Geena Lisa: Typical Eurovision. Geena gets to the final, we're sure!

Round 4

. Francesco Palmeri: Sounds like a song that you can see in commercials about Club Med (tour operator). Not for Eurosong.
. Paranoiacs: Rock 'n Roll with a load of punk & loud guitars. Protestvotes are for them!
. Elisa: Semifinal is unreachable. Sing-a-long song, nothing more, nothing less.
. A Butterfly Mind: They can sing well, but this song  has a lot in common with Irish folk music. Missed chance
. Sandrine: This time her career really gets off the hook!! She really has got the Motown Vibes!

There might be good news for the international Eurosong fans soon. The EBU is examining the possibility to stream national finals live on its Eurovision Song Contest website Eurovision.tv. Flemish broadcaster VRT is one of the interested broadcasters and added the clause to its rules for Eurosong 2008.
Following the request of many Eurovision fans and as an extra feature on the new Eurovision.tv which will be launched on 15 January, the European Broadcasting Union examined the possibility to stream national finals live in the upcoming months. That doesn't mean that every national final will be streamed live. The national broadcasters first need to give the EBU their permission.

VRT's Eurosong 2008 rules include the clause that every artist allows the final of Eurosong 2008 to be streamed live and simultaneously on the website of the European Broadcasting Union. For Flemish broadcaster VRT and the future Belgian representative for the Eurovision Song Contest 2008, it would be a great opportunity of international promotion.

Tonight is the first quarter round!! :) :)
the top 2 will qualify to the semi finals.

Place 3 & 4 have a chance for one of the 2 wildcards.

Here are the videos of Katy Satyn - magical sensation

My review of Quarter round 2 (the songs)

E.F.R - Your guiding star:
*I don't like it. But he'll go to the semifinal just because he won Idols. And the jury will probably push the viewers to vote for him.

Esther - Game over:
* The only song in Dutch this year! And it's certainly not bad! It sounds like something Nelly Furtado, or Gwen Stefani would sing :)
I like this, and I think, with a good stage appearance, this could pass to the semi's!

Ishtar - O julissi na jalini:
* It's a weird song, but very original.
And it's happy, beautiful harmony in the voices, Urban Trad 2? :)
If we send this to Belgrade, we might score very high, or terribly low.

Kenza - Breaking all the rules:
* I like this song, very modern. And is a very popular music style among the young people. but I doubt this will be in the top 2 for the semifinals.

Tanja Dexters - Addicted to you:
* My personal favorite for tomorrow's show. It sounds a LOT like My Number One (Greece 05).
But I think this is better :)
I hope Tanja sings better than in 2002, if she does, then I think a ticket for the Semi is reachable :)

My personal ranking:

01. Tanja Dexters
02. Esther
03. Kenza
04. Ishtar
05. E.F.R.

My prediction:

01. Tanja Dexters
02. E.F.R.
03. Ishtar
04. Esther
05. Kenza

MY OVERALL OPINION: This quarter final is better than last week :)
