SEMI-FINAL 1 REVIEW - PART 1

1. MONTENEGRO - ZAUVIJEK VOLIM TE - STEFAN FILIPOVIC

A complete nothing of a song.  It's one of those instantly forgettable songs so the draw has really not been kind to them at all.  Other than a few votes from it's neighbours I don't see this song doing anything at all.  Chances of qualification - 10%

2. ISRAEL - KE'ILO KAN - BOAZ MUADA

There's no denying this guy has a great voice - but the song is just not good enough to stand out in the crowd, even more so considering #2 is the worst possible draw.  Another one where I don't actually see where the votes are going to come from.  Chances of qualifying - 10%

3. ESTONIA - LETO SVET - KREISIRAADIO

Absolutely horrible song.  It tries to be funny and fails miserably.  It truly is one of the worst ESC entries I've heard.  What is even more frustrating is that one of the best NF songs (365 Days) was in Eurolaul and Estonia didn't pick it.  I hope it fails miserably but I suspect as it's the first of the "joke" songs it may well do better than I hope :irked:.  Chances of qualifying - 40%

4. MOLDOVA - A CENTURY OF LOVE - GETA BURLACU

Another one where the voice is good but the song doesn't do it justice.  Being drawn after a joke may do it some good but I don't think there is enough about the song for it to stand out.  Will be guaranteed points from Romania - but where else will the votes come from? - I don't know.  Chances of qualifying - 20%

5. SAN MARINO - COMPLICE - MIODIO

The first of the 2 debutants in this semi come in with a rock-ish type song that is quite nice - but is it strong enough to qualify? - it's difficult to see where votes for San Marino will come from.  It's a pretty good song though - and the fact they're new may count in their favour.  Chances of qualifying - 40%

6. BELGIUM - O JULISSI NA JALINI - ISHTAR

Belgium go down the "imaginary" language again.  This is a strange little song that may well stand out against more traditional songs.  This is probably the first time that people will sit up and notice a song in this Semi-Final - which is all good for the Belgians chances of qualifying.  Chances of qualifying - 80%

7. AZERBAIJAN - DAY AFTER DAY - ELNUR H

SEMI-FINAL 1 REVIEW PART 2

11. IRELAND - IRELANDE DOUZE POINTS - DUSTIN THE TURKEY

The 2nd joke song of the Semi-Final - and this one is at least funnier that the Estonian entry.  There's alot of pretty witty stuff in the lyrics but a lot of it will be lost on an audience that doesn't speak English as a native language.  It's weird and funny enough to qualify with ease.  I would be surprised if it didn't qualify and finish top 10.  Chances of qualifying - 90%

12. ANDORRA - CASANOVA - GISELA

It's catchy....errm - that's about it.  It tries to be schlager and fails.  The draw has been exceptionally unkind to them placing them after the Irish joke and before the Bosnian oddity.  I really don't think this has any chance of qualifying at all.  Chances of qualifying - 5%

13. BOSNIA & HERZEGOVINA - POKUSAJ - LAKA

When I first heard this I thought is was a little too weird for ESC.  Having said that after a few listens it's actually a very innovative and different song.  It's a risk sending a song like this - but I think it may well pay off.  Chances of qualifying - 75%

14. ARMENIA - QELE QELE - SIRUSHO

Armenia continue to impress with their choices.  This is a good song and Sirusho is a great performer.  Barring an absolute disaster this is pretty much guaranteed a place in the final and may well a top 5 place in the final itself.  Chances of qualifying - 99%

15. THE NETHERLANDS - YOUR HEART BELONGS TO ME - HIND

This is a really good return to form for the Dutch.  It's a decent song with a good ethnic beat that will appeal to more than just western Europe.  However following such a good and popular song as Armenia may be a hindrance.  Chances of qualifying - 50%

16. FINLAND - MISS

SEMI-FINAL 2 REVIEW PART 1

1. ICELAND - THIS IS MY LIFE - EUROBAND

Nice europop beat and 2 very experienced and professional performers.  Could have done with a better draw especially with Sweden following them - but I still think this has a good chance of getting Iceland out of the semis.  Chances of qualifying - 60%

2. SWEDEN - HERO - CHARLOTTE PERRELLI

Typcially Swedish song from the former winner.  Will not be happy to have been drawn at #2 but should still not have much trouble qualifying. I'm not a particular fan of the song - but I am realistic enough to know it will do well.  Chances of qualifying - 90%

3. TURKEY - DELI - M

Semi-Final 2 Review Part 2

11. CROATIA - ROMANCA - KRALJEVI ULICE & 75 CENTS

What a load of rubbish .  Dreadful song with no appeal outside the Balkans at all.  Croatia used to be a great ESC country but their last few entries have been dire.  Chances of qualifying - 5%

12. BULGARIA - DJ TAKE ME AWAY - DEEP ZONE & BALTHAZAR

It's modern, it's catchy, it's actually pretty good.  Will it work on stage? - not sure, but they couldn't have asked for a better draw by following the rubbish Croatian entry, and before the forgettable Danish entry.  Chances of qualifying - 60%

13. DENMARK - ALL NIGHT LONG - SIMON MATHEW

It's unlike any song in the contest in style - but that doesn't increase it's chances any unfortunately.  He's a good performer though but it may not be enough to save them.  Chances of qualifying - 40%

14. GEORGIA - PEACE WILL COME - DIANA GHURTSKAIA

A decent song, not as good as her Belarussian NF song  last year but still.  She's a good performer and may well qualify with ease.  People are talking of the sympathy vote - but it didn't work for Corinna May in 2002 so why would it now.  Chances of qualifying - 70%

15.   HUNGARY - CANDLELIGHT - CS

DIRECT FINALISTS REVIEW

2. UNITED KINGDOM - EVEN IF - ANDY ABRAHAM

At last we have a SONG representing us at ESC.  It's not a bad song - it's a little outdated but it's OK.  However there are now 2 MAJOR problems.  Firstly he has very little charisma on stage, and secondly we've got the dreaded #2 draw.  Chances of winning - 1%

4. GERMANY - DISAPPEAR - NO ANGELS

It's a decent enough song - but it's nothing special.  Girl bands are no longer the in thing and this sounds too much like a Girls Aloud rejected song to do well.  Chances of winning - 5%

19. FRANCE - DIVINE - SEBASTIEN TELLIER

It's certainly original from the French - but is it good enough? - probably not.  It's just not got enough ooomph about it to do well unfortunately.  Chances of winning - 20%

22. SPAIN -BAILA EL CHIKICHIKI - RODOLFO CHIKILICUATRE

It's horrifically bad, a dreadful song with an annoying beat to it.  The chances of success rely entirely on which of the joke songs qualifies from the semi-finals and where they are in the draw.  If any of the others are drawn near this then it's chances diminish, otherwise I think that this will do best of the Big 4 .  Chances of winning - 40%

23. SERBIA - ORO - JELENA TOMASEVIC

It's a decent song to defend their title with and it will no doubt do well.  Personally I'm not a particular fan of it but I can see the appeal - and the guaranteed votes from certain areas.  Chances of winning - 70%.

Yea Ian for once we agree..... :D
Its going to be

Armenia - Ukraine - Serbia - Russia -(from the scandinavian block) Sweden
And a powerful outsider Turkey.
I believe the stage appearance will clean things up and from what i have seen Ukraine has a plus here with Serbia as being at their home  :goodjob1:

SEMI-FINAL 1 REVIEW

1. MONTENEGRO - ZAUVIJEK VOLIM TE - STEFAN FILIPOVI?

This is not a bad song, in my honest opinion, but it's just terribly uncompetitive. Not going anywhere...  :-\

2. ISRAEL - KE'ILO KAN - BOAZ MUADA

This is just plain and boring. Plus the #2 draw...

3. ESTONIA - LETO SVET - KREISIRAADIO

This won't even pick up votes from Ex-Yu, everyone would have to look up for the lyrics to understand it.  :talktothehand:

4. MOLDOVA - A CENTURY OF LOVE - GETA BURLACU

4Fun with bad English.

5. SAN MARINO - COMPLICE - MIODIO

Weird lyrics and a forgettable melody. This is not going too far...  :worry:

6. BELGIUM - O JULISSI NA JALINI - ISHTAR

This is weird and will stand out among other songs... Quite probably we'll see them in the finals.  :goodjob1:

7. AZERBAIJAN - DAY AFTER DAY - ELNUR H

~ Eurovision 2008 ~

The Method :
well after all this time, long due, my ranking of the 2008 eurovision song contest..
the system is simple, a rank out of 10*3 for melody and 10*3 for lyrics (but this is more based on diggiloo, and therefore we are all doomed to be biased here.. but it is very clear what the song's about and if it's cliche or not).. so that's already 60% of the final ranking, there is 10*2 for the voice, and then 10*1 and 10*1 for performance and look.. which gives us a rank out of 100 for each song..

43rd : Spain - Baila el Chiki Chiki - Rodolfo Chikilicuatre : 000/100
(0*3 + 0*3 + 0*2 + 0*1 + 0*1)
Not only is this the worst entry of the year, it might as well be the worst entry ever in eurovision. It is obviously a song made to mock eurovision level and eurovision quality. Some have done this in the past, others have sung about eurovision, but rarely have they been really "mock" entries.. except for this year when we had two of these, Ireland and Spain. While the first one had elements to save it, this one is simply horrible. The live was annoying as hell, and the song barely has any "melody" and I don't find it funny.. a true last!

42nd : Czech Republic - Have some fun - Tereza Kerndlová : 000/100
(0*3 + 0*3 + 0*2 + 0*1 + 0*1)
Even if it only gets 0, it's still above the Spanish horror. On the other hand, this is everything I purely hate. A bimbo showing off her legs, throwind her head here and there, trying to blow a few notes right.. and being incapable of doing so. Add the boring silver heart and the fact that the song is definitely a crap,an irrelevent crap, and add the fact that during the week we saw her mock other entries, you get the idea that this is definitely down the list.

41st : Estonia - Leto svet - Kreisiraadio : 003/100
(0*3 + 1*3 + 0*2 + 0*1 + 0*1)
Yet it gets one point for being not in English, from Estonia that's pretty rare. But apart from that, we barely get a melody. We have three fat ugly men shouting irrelevencies with three bimbos showing off boards with cakes and fruits and then flags.. I'm sorry but I don't find anything funny there, if anything this is offensive to the beautiful languages they used there.

40th : Latvia - Wolves of the sea - Pirates of the sea : 005/100
(1*3 + 0*3 + 0*2 + 1*1 + 1*1)
Well well well, here we have Disneyvision! A boring entry that shouts screams yells and sometimes tries to whisper with a lot of display on what a good hollywood pirate should have.. But what about music? It's just disney sing along melody to which only the Brits could give 10pts. Horribly annoying and totally pointless esc entry. 12th at esc is so insulting!

39th : Lithuania - Nomads in the night - Jeronimas Milius : 006/100
(1*3 + 1*3 + 0*2 + 0*1 + 0*1)
I realize just now that all the baltic countries are so far below.. As soon as it qualified, I couldn't believe that Lithuania chose this above many other entries, which without being excellent were all much better than this very very very very boring entry. It's not the huge crap, but it's lasting forever and ever. And he definitely chose a scary look instead of something more "nomads" would make us think of. And then on the big night he made too much wrong notes to prove us he was a good singer. It's definitely one to forget.

You really know how to use the sabre of words, Morgan!  :goodjob1:  It was not only true, Morgan, what you wrote, but it also made me laugh.  :D The only thing I would change in this is to put Estonia even lower than Czech. I was very unhappy, when I noticed that they were singing also in Finnish, and that way they included Finland into that "musical" disaster.  :'(

38th : Germany - Disappear - No Angels : 007/100
(1*3 + 0*3 + 1*2 + 0*1 + 0*1)
On the night of the german selection, I felt they had 3 good songs, 1 average and 1 horror.. of course they chose the horror one, simply because it was boring girls kinda shaking it, with a lot of fabrics floating in the air.. Except it was obvious that this style is overdone.. How many girlsband have been in esc, damn, and how many have entered the top 5? Count and you'll see how ridiculous it is to keep on insisting. But Germans like other western countries don't have at all a feedback on esc history and just sends on whatever they want.. No Angels were too popular to beat in Germany, thankfully no one (except apparently Bulgaria) knows them really outside.. But the good thing is, craps from western countries always feel better than craps from eastern europe.. i don't know why that is..

37th : Poland - For life - Isis Gee : 008/100
(1*3 + 0*3 + 2*2 + 1*1 + 0*1)
Let's start off by saying, sure she can "sing".. it's not beautiful at all, but ok the notes are there sometimes.. And then why the blondiness and the Maria Carey attitude? Such an americanized ballad makes me puke really. The tan, the blue horrible dress.. It's very annoying and frustrating. And as I am against marriage, this is the one step across the line that should not have been taken.. Down there.. obviously!

36th : Malta - Vodka - Morena : 015/100
(1*3 + 1*3 + 3*2 + 1*1 + 2*1)
I always liked that deep voice, except she barely knows how to use it. Apart from that, it's a funk song that goes absolutely no where. Malta had many good national finals in the past, but this year it was very annoying and the fight between two women more than anything. Out of the 4 songs these two women had, the worst one was chosen. It's totally pointless and the live made was absolutely laughable, with the "spin my head look my hair moves".. Finally the maltese craps are not supported by fans, who often liked them!

35th : Greece - My secret combination - Kalomira : 017/100
(2*3 + 1*3 + 2*2 + 2*1 + 2*1)
Well this won't come as a surprise to those who know me. Typical pop S*** which I hate absolutely. It's a pointless song, just tries to be sexy and appealing. And what annoyed me the most is that, of course, they did everything to help it, with the sexiest postcard of the year.. Irritable in all possible ways was her way to reply each time she was interviewed. This kind of superficial girl should be banned at least from esc.. ugly as her pinkish piece of cloth that covered her genital parts, she was doomed to please as I was sure to hate it.

34th : Andorra - Casanova - Gisela : 018/100
(2*3 + 1*3 + 2*2 + 3*1 + 2*1)
Well I don't get why they let two esc songs have the same title (it was the case for "Angel" and now for "Casanova").. Anyway having such title, it was sure the song would be bad.. but who thought the song would have nothing to do with casanova? Just a pop bubbly as much as it could that brought us nothing but a lot of boredome. Ah yes, I like it more than Greece for I liked her funky clothes, at least more than many other ones, and the BD award is of course undeserved..

33rd : Slovenia - Vrag naj vzame - Rebeka Dremelj : 024/100
(1*3 + 3*3 + 5*2 + 1*1 + 1*1)
The first good voice of this review falls in a very bad song. First of all, some nice points for being in Slovenian, and the lyrics are quite fun. But the melody really gets on my nerves. And then we all saw her making a fool of herself. When many eastern girls are professional, she just moves here, brings an arm up in the air and then another one and oooh she's gone moving them.. Really dumb, and the look was really surprising. It felt so amateur all over the place, even if she "tried" to do something with the helmet guys.. but what? we shall never know!

32nd : Azerbaijan - Day after day - Elnur & Samir : 025/100
(3*3 + 2*3 + 2*2 + 3*1 + 3*1)
Some new comers are lucky, some are not. If this is lucky, it's mainly because of geographic reasons and like Georgia it will probably qualify every year and like Greece always stick to the top 10.. Anyway back to the song.. It's got some rocky ok sound, and some very amateur features.. All in all it was very cliche as a performance and its originailty comes from its weakness, the guys trying to scream more than the croatian girl back in 1996! Go figure..

31st : Bulgaria - DJ, take me away - Deep Zone & Balthazar : 030/100
(3*3 + 2*3 + 4*2 + 4*1 + 3*1)
Well I never hated this entry. It was modern and fresh and promising. I hoped to be surprised, and I wasn't really. If anything I was hypnotized by her dress and the fact that, of course, that one too, was put up to show more legs! Not a bad voice but not enough singing, or too much dancing.. All in all the idea was interesting but it never felt accomplished, more like a song hesitating what was its style.

30th : Ireland - Irelande douze pointe - Dustin the Turkey : 032/100
(4*3 + 4*3 + 1*2 + 3*1 + 3*1)
What to think of the turkey? At least not the same thing than Marija, who really has absolutely no taste having it first of esc 08.. But it's definitely not the horror announced. Sure it's annoying and he can't sing, but he had two very good backing singers. Sure it's a mock entry, but it's got funny lyrics and Dustin's got the right attitude, a lot of fair play. But it's not really a song we can rank in the top of the year either and here is where it belongs, above the craps but below the decency.

29th : Ukraine - Shady lady - Ani Lorak : 033/100
(2*3 + 2*3 + 3*2 + 8*1 + 7*1)
I just said "decency" and I'm not sure this entry can fit in this category.. Looking at the way this song got 33pts tells everything.. It's quite below many songs wiht only 2 for a very irritable melody and 2 for irrelevent lyrics.. and then 3 for Ani is not really a singer more than she's a hottie with.. LEGS (yet again..) but then we have the most modern performance of the year, something worthy of Las Vegas and such with very hot guys (especially the blondie) and so all in all, this is an acceptable entry but a totally not acceptable runner-up of esc.. rightfully it almost got no 12pts, since eastern countries favored Russia and western countries favored their communities' origin countries..

28th : Switzerland - Era stupendo - Paolo Meneguzzi : 034/100
(3*3 + 3*3 + 5*2 + 3*1 + 3*1)
We might enter "decency" alas with this entry. But I am sure it's a surprise to most everyone since I am known to like the more traditional and temperate entries, especially when they come from western countries. However, this is obviously an overrated entry which rightfully did not qualify to the final. It's that italian macho boy trying to be sexy and having his ballad to charm. Not at all what I like. He can sing and that's good, but he never entered his song. And that live! Oh my god, what's the point to go traditional if then you're going to imitate the amateur and old fashion performance of eastern european countries? what was that, "dancing"?

27th : Hungary - Candlelight - Csézy : 039/100
(3*3 + 2*3 + 7*2 + 5*1 + 5*1)
First it's annoying that it was changed to English, which didn't help it since it got last of its semi-final.. Then the dress.. gosh for once it's not being legs or boobie, it's just plain ugly. Why? The live, the lights, cliche, even at esc Chiara did it way back in 1998 and the melody's frustrating because it never reaches a climax.. Only her great voice and the cute accent saves it and makes it a fair entry.

26th : United-Kingdom - Even if - Andy Abraham : 041/100
(4*3 + 3*3 + 6*2 + 4*1 + 4*1)
A step above in the ladder obviously here, for the song's fresh and fun. Well the live was overdone with the irrelevent fireworks and the blue suits was very ugly.. But the song swings fine, he can push the notes and the song's enjoyable. But the song lacks the crazyness and sparks of a true swing entry. It stays stuck to the stage's ground, never reaching the audience. Surprising last spot (which I saw Germany getting), even though we all know that it's quite unfair that these bottom 3 songs share the same points..

25th : Montenegro - Zauvijek volim te - Stefan Filipović : 043/100
(3*3 + 4*3 + 5*2 + 6*1 + 6*1)
Exactly like last year, the Montenegrin entry is enjoyable for it is very honnest and humble. It's never reaching high, but it's never down there annoying and horrible. He's cute in his own way, trying as hard as he can. The girls are not overdoing it, the game of red hands is acceptable as a wink to the audience but not over the top. Sadly the song itself is very mediocre and it can only be accepted because it's again in the national language, as often does the Balkan countries, obviously therefore more appreciable than the north eastern countries..

24th : Romania - Pe-o margine de lume - Nico & Vlad : 046/100
(3*3 + 4*3 + 6*2 + 7*1 + 6*1)
Here we are with the country that nicely hosts us in this forum.. But i can't help not liking the typical italian ballad, couple around the piano.. It's annoying, but not hateful. Nice voices, decent live because it's easier to perform a ballad, but the clothes they chose were bad. Why was he in casual jeans and her in night dress? It felt heavy, over worked and never gentle and warm like it aimed to do. However, I'm sure that if you switch its running order with Norway, you might also switch their final results!

23rd : Armenia - Qele qele - Sirusho : 047/100
(4*3 + 3*3 + 3*2 + 10*1 + 10*1)
And the first 10pts, and there are two of them! Incredible live performance, without having too much jump all over the place, more like playing with the song.. and I like her cute little dress, it was very classical, except well..LEGS.. but then.. She barely can sing and it felt quite horrible sometimes live.. and the song, well, how can we sum it all up? well the title does it for us "move move" yes let's move on to the next one, for this is yet another pop shaky entry.. Only thing to keep from this entry are the three male dancers. I'd keep them up locked and ready to use!

22nd : Belarus - Hasta la vista - Ruslan Alenho : 050/100
(5*3 + 3*3 + 6*2 + 7*1 + 7*1)
This might be another surprise, to see Ruslan so high. But I do think this entry is much better than last year's one that got the country a 6th unfair placing. Ruslan is even cuter than Dmitry! But he's got less support in his home country, and when Dmitry had i don't know how much magic tricks to get his 6th spot, Ruslan was left with four light balls.. More charismatic and definitely a better singer too, Ruslan delivered a very average pop entry and can't really save it, unless he sings something else..

21st : Macedonia - Let me love you - Tamara, Vrčak & Adrijan : 051/100
(4*3 + 3*3 + 8*2 + 7*1 + 7*1)
Usually not a fan of the Macedonian entries (except for Karolina) who always qualified for geographical televotes, here I like it for once and the juries  decided that its 10th spot was not enough and saved Charlotte instead! Obviously not really my type of entries, its R'n'B is definitely more enjoyable than having yet another bubbly pop, and it's not purely bad R'n'b like their 06 entry! The main difference being the incredible voice from that woman, who really made a great live too. It should have gone through.
