12th : Croatia - Romanca - Kraljevi Ulice & 75 Cents : 074/100
(8*3 + 7*3 + 7*2 + 7*1 + 8*1)
Croatia has rarely been up in my list, and this is the 4th best song from Croatia points wise (but some years were lower level and therefore Croatia has been more often in the top 10 than what it seems).. Anyway what is often enjoyable from Croatia, as it is for most Balkan countries, is the use of the national language. Then add the fact that Croatia has rarely been so different, it's Brazil meets Zagreb in the most exquisite way. Nothing poppy, nothing slurpy. We just have music, a good voice, and a lot of fun. The problem is the dancer, what was the point of her? And even though the old man was kind of cute, he felt completely out of place. It's always hard to create a certain mood of "randomly out of order" and Croatia almost manages it. I think it fails because of the dancer, but the use of doves on the background, though typical felt very gentle and not at all overly done. It ended up looking very humble and simple, and that most of all makes of a good song a really fine entry.

This song was all the time in my top 10. I simply loved it and I still love it.  It gives me every time such a good feeling. I am also a lover of gypsy music and you can find the gypsy athmosphere throughout the song. Just like you said: good music, fantastic voices, no naked legs (or any other naked parts of human body), no too tight dresses - just good oldstyle singing! This was a song from the old time eurovision, the eurovision which I once loved. These men can sing, so they didn't need to do any tricks on the stage.  :goodjob1:

Just like you Morgan, I was wondering what was the meaning of that dancer in the song and it has been a mystery to me all the time. I am 100 % sure, that without the dancer this song could have reached top 10, even top 5.

And that old man was cute on hís own way. He showed to everyone that it is possible to enjoy  the show, music, entertaining and life without being young and fresh! I simply loved him, just like I love all nice old people.

*watching Romanca in youtube*

But one thing I can't understand, Morgan! How can it be possible that "that one song" is not yet ranked out?  :'(

i don't think that without the dancer it would have done much better. After all, the song only got points from its neighbors, whereas something like Bosnia got points from neighbors but also from many big western countries and from all the northern countries because it charmed everyone and reminded more of Kusturica's atmosphere than Croatia did.. I think Bosnia outshined Croatia, with or without dancers.

I'm sorry to everyone, even ijem i think is surprised that "this" song is still in.. only one to go before the top 10.. who is the unlucky 11th? :(

That was one of the 2 I was surprised about - but I was less surprised by this than the other one still in :)

well at least it wasn't "surprisingly" in my top 10, only 12th.. well i don't think coming from me it's that much of a surprise. I think the other one is even more of a surprise, i think you're surprised by the song Niko hates, since it's not at all my type of songs.. but I myself am surprised that you're not surprised about another song in, which i think i'm the only one liking of all esc fans ^-^

Well I'm pleased Romanca's not in your top 10 - because it's a song I really don't like (sorry to Niko too  - because he likes it as well).
Looking at the 11 songs left - and remembering your tastes - there's 3 I wouldn't have expected to be there - 1 of which I really can't believe you like because as you say it's just not your type of song.  Looking at the 11 songs left - there is only 1 I can honestly say I don't like.  There's 6 that I'm not keen on but can listen to.  The remaining 4 are all in my own top 10 (including my resounding #1)

strange, i was never fond of "Romanca" before esc, it was around 20th, but the live it never felt too long, some songs' 3mns feel forever.. and this one smoothed by so easily, so nicely. It was enjoyable really, and it was erm a "song".. i can't believe for instance anyone can have Greece or Armenia above it..

We should totally compare afterwards, look on how close we agree or not.. Yes I know, Niko hates it, and people keep being surprised I like it.. well it's good to surprise people.. 3 surprises you say, good good.. and as usual we don't seem agree, 4 only in common (if my 11th isn't one of these 4).. tough life!

interesting to read that.. I think without a doubt that modern esc is dead down the trash compared to the 60s.. and yet it keeps getting better and better, 2006 is the worst esc year ever, my 10th only has 47/100 but 2007 was much better and 2008 was a tiny bit better than 2007. It had more craps but also a better overall edition.. (I have in excel a ranking of all years best on points and number of entries, I'm a freak lol)

11th : Albania - Zemrën e lamë peng - Olta Boka : 076/100
(8*3 + 6*3 + 8*2 + 8*1 + 10*1)
Well the last song, sadly only 11th, is another song from balkan that qualified to esc final but then did poorly in it! And I can't get why, it surely is better than the songs that did better.. Albania's best by a huge far in all its esc history (even though I have Albania 10th in 2006, but as I said earlier it's the worst esc year..).. At first I was mad at it, you have no idea. The Albanian final is to me always the best of the year, the one I expect every December, and very much enjoy. Every year they make terrible choices, and I thought that one too. The same couple writing all their entries, it's tiring and of course sounds similar to us. But this was a tiny bit more interesting musically, but most of all it was wonderfully by Olta, who was probably the best dressed of the year. But the live was very gentle, very deep and very rich with a beautiful face in close up by the camera. For once that the wind doesn't feel unncessary! Definitely a great song which I tried to put in my top 10, but sadly did not manage to do so, probably will make everyone else mad, since "that" song is now in top 10!

First, I very much agree, that this was Albania's best song in ESC so far. The song was very good, simple, sung well. No nudity at all, which is only a bonus - it means that the singer has so good voice that she did not have to show her legs or anything else to get more points. This song was one of the most underrated songs this year. Extra bonus comes from using native language. I have never understood why so many countries want to sing in English (sorry Ian), but at least I got a feeling this year, that countries start to use more their own languages.

I am very happy to see that Albania is so close to your top 10 - but I really don't get it, what is "that one song" doing in your top 10.  :(

Well, as you have maybe already learned, I have a very special - sometimes even odd taste in music, and especially when concerning ESC songs (remember, that some of my all time ESC favorits are Austria 1979, Spain 1983 and Sweden 1963.  :P)

Odd taste indeed - Spain 83 was a brave song but not my cup of tea, Sweden 63 is just dull for me (but not as dull as the Norwegian entry that year which remains the dullest ESC entry EVER!!)...Austria 79 I do like though :D

In my opinion Sweden 1963 is far from being dull, but tastes are tastes!  ;) As I said before, Niko loves jazz.  :)

Here is a list of some songs which I really hate with passion, but which very many ESC fans like:

Poland 2004, Sweden 2004,  Sweden 2002, Spain 2002, The Netherlands 1993, Italy 1990 (could an ESC winner be any worse ), Germany 1979. A lot of songs I can't remember now, maybe because I have wanted to forget them.  :-[

Of those songs you've listed as hating with a passion

Poland 04 - my last of 04
Sweden 04 - bearable
Sweden 02 - mid table
Spain 02 - my 2nd last of 02
Netherlands 93 - unbelievably overrated
Italy 90 - worst winner EVER and my last of 90
Germany 79 - worst Seigel song and unbelievably overrated as well

So we agree on most of them :D :cheer:

So my taste is not as weird as what I thought.  :hi5:

But I removed one song from the list before I posted it - I hate it but not with passion.   :angel1:

well ijem ill be expecting you to comment on my top 10, and tell me what 7 songs i underranked based on your votes, but if you have something like Greece, Armenia, Russia or Ukraine up there you'd be totally uninteresting to me.. I can't deal with fans liking the bimbo showing legs anymore..

I'm glad everyone came to like Albania too, it wasn't a fan's favorite to begin with but her live was extremely convincing. I still think she just got a bad running order..

Now let's see..
Sweden 1963 : i have it 8th of the year, with 68pts : 7*3 + 7*3 + 6*2 + 7*1 + 7*1
Spain 1983 : i have it 9th of the year, with 73pts : 8*3 + 7*3 + 7*2 + 8*1 + 6*1
Austria 1979 : i have it 9th of the year, with 65pts : 6*3 + 7*3 + 7*2 + 6*1 + 6*1
Poland 2004 : i have it 2nd of the year, with 84pts : 10*3 + 6*3 + 9*2 + 9*1 + 9*1
Sweden 2004 : i have it 9th of the year, with 48pts : 6*3 + 3*3 + 7*2 + 5*1 + 2*1
Sweden 2002 : i have it 17th of the year, with 43pts : 5*3 + 3*3 + 5*2 + 5*1 + 4*1
Netherlands 1993 : i have it 8th of the year, with 87pts : 8*3 + 8*3 + 10*2 + 10*1 + 9*1
Italy 1990 : i have it 9th of the year, with 69pts : 7*3 + 6*3 + 8*2 + 8*1 + 6*1
Germany 1979 : i have it 17th of the year, with 36pts : 4*3 + 2*3 + 5*2 + 4*1 + 4*1

well you pretty much only mentioned just the average song to my lists, except for Poland 2004, which is not at all a fans' favorite, just a favorite of mine, i have it 2nd but in a poor year. Netherlands 1993 has a better grade than it does, but it's only 8th because 93 is an awesome year to me.. on the contrary both Sweden 02 and Germany 79 are down there for me, the second being at 2 songs away from being last!

Russia was in my top 10 pre contest - but that version at ESC ruined what was essentially an OK song.  The performance was just plain weird with the ice skater and him ripping his shirt open  - none of the others you mentioned are close to my top 10

i will never get why people think i have an unconventional taste. look at my top 10 and compare to fans' top 10 and you'll see there are some similarities, even if that drives Niko nuts! Just for a dozen of fans' faves i hated and another dozen of surprises high in my ranks, i've been caracterized as a "weird taste" but I don't think I'm any different than anyone with just a truly personal opinion
