wow 8 of these are in my personal top 10 of their years (France 2008 which isn't part of these 8 is actually a great song too..)!
who thought we'd so much agree? but then again, as you mentioned, a lot of years are missing, how can anyone really favor the 00s when it's by far the worse decade?

my personal top 10 always changes, but not my all time #1 which remained all through the years of being an esc fan an IRISH song ::)

I have to get more into listening to older years when I have the time :)

As you'd probably expect - there are very few in your top 10 that I actually like

Brainstorm is good
Virginie had a good song but a dreadful performance
Anonymous were OK
Lordi were decent

The rest I don't like

what strike me most, apart from having a good taste and the many recent songs, is the origin of the songs

Latvia, Estonia, Finland and 4 French songs, there's definitely something going on there.. with Germany being a French neighbor and the nearest western country to eastern Europe, it really lives Andorra and Turkey with the only southern accent..

anyway still a good top 10 with a very surprising Virginie 8)

A couple of surprising ones for me there...particularly Finland 85 for some reason I wouldn't have thought it would appeal to you - don't know why though

I know you're a huge Finnish fan I just didn't expect that particular one.

Yes Sweden 81 is a huge surprise.  So are the 2 Swiss songs.  Daniela I can understand more than Veronique (a song that is really quite anonymous for me)

well i have 30 Finnish songs in my top 10 and something like 15 in a top 5 so I guess you could name any Finnish song and I'd go "awww i love it"

Sweden 81 is huge to me. I really love Bjorn Skifs and the song's extremely strong. His live is also huge, especially if you compare it to a darker and more effective but classy performance by Skifs. He's going for the bad boy still in jacket, gloves and pink in 81 and it's simply great. And I'm glad my country gave it 12 and helped it get in the top 5! It's Sweden at its best like it never would be quite again (until The Ark.. but that's a different story :P)

I also love Switzerland, probably my 4th fave country. Daniela is very classy. It's what I'd call "a damn strong song with no flaws whatsoever" but I also feel very touched about the lyrics, which finally put an end to the thought that love should be an irrelevant singing matter. Veronique's song is a strong ballad. Now that's a ballad. It's not just slow for the purpose of being slow. It goes with the entire melancholic mood of the song, that doesn't hesitate between sexy and intriguing. And FINALLY a love song that mentions having sex clearly and simply!

WOW - that is some list.  Firstly the good news - someone else loves Iemand als jij :cheer: it's also in my top 10 now.  Also nice to see great songs like La source, Panayia mu, panayia mu, Bitaqet hobb, Skibet skal selje i nat & Quand tu reviendras in there.  However...the bad news....and please don't hate me for this - but I cannot stand your #1...it's a definite love/hate entry I think.  Austria 79 is an interesting choice.  Sometimes I love it sometimes I don't - a mood entry.  The 2 Dutch songs are nice - but Maribelle's was just a little too saccharine for me and Willeke was a little old-fashioned for 1994 but is a great song nonetheless.  Maria at 11 is a great choice.

Thank you Ian! I know that Spain 1983 is a love / hate song. But, the best thing in it is that it will not leave anybody cold - you either fall in love with it or hate it from the bottom of your heart.   ;)

Very true - you're the former and I'm the latter.

An update of my top 10

1. Germany 1981 - Johnny Blue - I honestly can't see it ever changing to be honest.
2. France 2001 - Je n'ai que mon ame - restored my faith in ESC after a shocking first half to the 2001 contest this saved it.
3. Italy 1992 - Rapsodia - It's well known that I don't like Italian entries as a rule - but this is sung with such incredible emotion that I can't help but love it.
4. France 1969 - Un jour, un enfant - Only one word to describe it - CLASSY.
5. Spain 1989 - Nacida para amar - Stopped me in my tracks when I was listening to all the songs a few years ago.  Excellent vocal performance live too.
6. Ireland 1993 - In Your Eyes - The reason I'm an ESC fan.  I always watched but Niamh made me a fan of the contest.
7. Belgium 1993 - Iemand als jij - Last? I just don't get it.  It's such a beautiful song, she performed it pretty well too.  She's now more famous for the award (which I think is unjustified because I don't actually think she looked that bad).
8. Slovakia 1998 - Modlitba - A stunning song.  She missed one part in the live and it cost her dearly it would seem.  I can't see any other reason why only Croatia voted for it.
9. Luxembourg 1973 - Tu te reconnaitras - A fabulous performance of a stunningly gorgeous song.
10. Germany 1975 - Ein Lied kann eine Brücke sein - Years ahead of it's time.  It was so contemporary that the idiot juries just didn't see what a great song and performance this was.

Feel free to comment :)

I really like most of your top 10 songs. Especially I like France 1969, Italy 1992 (which is lovely, but I don't like Liberta at all), Ireland 1993 was in my opinion the best Irish winner songs from 1990's, and rest are good too. But for some reason I don't like  France 2001 and Spain 1989 too much.

I don't say this often - but I think I actually overrate France 2001 - for the simple reason that the rest of the year (except the Greek song) was so unbelievably DIRE that it just stands out a mile in the year.  Having said that - Natasha's performance was breathtakingly good.  As for Spain 1989 - it's one of those ones you can't quite explain why you like it...you just do (a bit like the one I chose for the Theme Contest)

Yes, for example, I really can't explain, why I like very much "Raggio di Luna", which is maybe disliked by most of the ESC fans. But those things are quite magical ones, aren't they?  ;D

I was just thinking - shouldn't we also create a thread for ESC songs which we really really dislike - I have more than 10 of them and can't think which one is worse than the other.  :D

Martial, these are Carola's results in the Eurovision Song Contest:

1983 - 3rd place (126 points)
1991 - 1st place (146 points)
2006 - 5th place (170 points)

442 points in three contests (juries and televoting) and you didn't think that eny esc fan loved Carola?
I must say, I'm not really impressed by her performances in 1983 and 2006, but I really love Fångad av en stormvind. I just love the song!

Which 3 don't you hate?
