Did you know that the woman who represented Israel in 1992, Dafna Dekel, first didn't want to participate in the ESC.

Dekels agent suggested to participate in the 1992 Israeli "Kdam" (the Israeli pre-selection to the Eurovision song contest), but Dafna Dekel turned this suggestion down.

After the agent promised her that she would not win the pre-selection Dekel agreed to participate with the song "Ze rak sport" (It's just sport). After all the song won Kdam Eurovision and Dafna Dekel went on to represent her country in Sweden.

In Malmö Dafna Dekel got a good score: 6th place with 85 points. Israel received points from: Spain [10], Turkey [2], France [8], Sweden [4], Portugal [7], Cyprus [4], Malta [7], Switzerland [8], Luxembourg [4], Austria [1], United Kingdom [7], Denmark [2], Yugoslavia [12], Norway [2], Germany [4], Netherlands [3].

Did you know that 2006 was the first time that Finland finished higher than the United Kingdom...and that they have done so every year since.

i thought the pt of the Question thread about eurovision was to talk about these but with a guess.. no one even tried t guess on my last question!

anyway did you know that the song writers for France 77 (and later France 81) didn't have a singer when they stopped in a Portuguese restaurant. In the room downstairs the little girl from the owners was doing some singing to entertain the clients.. they loved her, and that's how Marie-Myriam got in..

I have only visited this forum a few times, so I don't have seen that thread, I'm sorry.
I don't have much time now, but I surely will visit that thread when I'm home.

Thank you for posting this information!  :) I didn't knew this! Woow, what a cool way to get in the Eurovision song contest. She even got the first place! Really cool.   :goodjob:

France is a really good Eurovision-country. The country participate since 1956, only missed 2 editions, won five times and never came last. They had good entries. A certain acquisition for Eurovision-fans!

well good Eurovision-country doesn't start to being with ; it regularly wins the "Best esc country" awards around the net in different sites, usually having to battle with the UK and Spain for the top spot, followed by Luxembourg usually doing well (but that just doubles French pts in my opinion, as Monaco-Luxembourg = France at the end). Even though Ireland is the country that won the most, it's Frenchmen who have the most often won Eurovision, 58, 60, 61, 62, 65, 69, 71, 73, 77, 83 that's ten total. I can't really count Vicky she's German-Greek. Then as France itself, 5 victories, 4 runner-ups including a very close one, 7 times third, 7 times fourth, 5 times fifth.. And yes, the only big country without a last place and without a 0, something we used to share with the Uk until 2003 came along!

But Eurovision is not about one country but many countries. If the competition wasn't so wonderful with so many great singers, then France or Luxembourg or the Uk and all others wouldn't have pulled for us so many wonderful entries. That's what's missing nowadays. The spiral that would bring everyone's level up a bit!

Yes, of course Eurovision is about all the participating countries and every country is important for the contest.
What I meant to say was that France had a lot of great entries in the past.

Another fact:

The Netherlands won the contest four times (1957, 1959, 1969, 1975).
The Netherlands hosted the contest four times (1958, 1970, 1976, 1980).
The Netherlands ended up on the last place four times (1958, 1962, 1963, 1968).
The Netherlands missed four editions (1985, 1991 (Dutch Remembrance of the Dead national holiday on May 4), 1995, 2002 (The Netherlands scored poorly the previous years).
The Netherlands didn't survive the semi-final four times (2005, 2006, 2007, 2008).

Looks like The Netherlands has something with the number four!  :P

No just kidding. :P I also think that The Netherlands don't reach the final this year, again.

But, until now... only four times!  ;)

Did you know that Gordon from De Toppers already tried to get in the Eurovision Song Contest two times.
The first time (1990) he participated in the Dutch national final with the song Gini (Dutch) and in 2003 he participated with the song I'll Be Your Voice (English).

Gordon - Gini

Gordon - I'll Be Your Voice

Okay, Gini was bad (he ended up on the 9th place in a field of 10 with one point ahead of the number last), but he made good songs as Kon Ik Maar Even Bij Je Zijn, Ik Bel Je Zomaar Even Op and Never Nooit Meer.

Did you know, that the charismatic male host of ESC 2007, actor and gospel singer Mikko Leppilampi, moved last year to USA? All of us in Finland are hoping that he would move back to Finland - the sooner, the better.

He moved there with his family (= wife Emilia + daughter Lilia, born in 2005) because he has made a contract with Brillstein Entertainment Partners. The same company has a contract with Brad Pitt, Orlando Bloom, Gwyneth Paltrow and Jennifer Aniston. Mikko has said that he is realistic, so he is not a tramp. "Time will show what will happen to me", he says.

Mikko and his family moved to Los Angeles in October last year.

First, I want to thank you Remy for this very interesting, informative and good statistics.  :goodjob:

Now, what makes 00's very interesting, is that the winners come only from certain districts.

Out of the winners 4 come from  ex-Soviet Union area, out of which 2 are Baltic countries, then we have 3 winners from Nordic countries, 2 from Eastern Mediterranea and one winner is an ex-Yugoslavian country.

If we exclude the British Isles &  which make their own "territory", it seems that the last time when a continental west-European country has won was in 1988, when Celine Dion won ESC for Switzerland!  :o

that's also the last time a song in French won (sorry patricia and malena! but also evridiki or bosnia 99)

interesting stats as well is that we do see how esc is more spread around.. no more countries with big big victories all over (3 for france in 60s and always in the top 5 that decade except for 66 ; 4 for ireland in the 90s and the runner up in 97 and 90 as well as 10th in both 91 and 98!)

Thank you Niko  :)

Woow, 1988 is a long time ago.
Okay, France was very close in 1991 and Belgium in 2003.

It's also very remarkable that only Serbia won with a non-English song in the last 11 years.

And in the last 25 years only once a country from the actual big 4 has won, even if UK and France achieved many victories in the past

and in the last 25 years, Germany got second in 85 and 87... France in 90, 91 and between 88 and 97 France got the top 10 each year except for 96 and the Uk scored top 10 as well almost every year and got second as we all know in 88, 89, 92, 93 and 98! Spain had a good roll in 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004 with 4 top 10 results in a row..

even if it looks bad for the last 5 or 6 years, the big 4 did score some hot results..
