So much tam-tam with Portugal selection and they choose this?  :(

I really don't know what to say.  :worry:

The song itself is quite nice and it is at least a song with national Portuguese music elements. I hope this will qualify, but I am afraid that we can only see this in semifinal.  :(

It's nice - but it just doesn't seem to have an awful lot too it as a song.

ooooooook let me scream a bit here
first of all, the much "tam-tam" is totally unfair, Portugal every year has a nice and charming NF that is very tiny and totally overlooked by fans. Myself I rarely like the Portuguese songs in their NF but because this year they decided to use the Internet doesn't mean there was much "tam-tam" you can keep that for SPAIN which had the biggest NF of them all and ended up making a big fool of itself with an awful awful hosting and setting and destroying all of Melody's chances..
Then the "this" you talk about is a VERY PORTUGUESE SONG and is quite simply excellent for its simpleness softness, calmness. When Moldova sends Moldovan music in Moldovan about Moldova it seems EXCELLENT to a few around here which I won't name but who come from Eastern Europe, but when Portugal does it, it's just boring? Oh please EXCUSE Portugal for not shaking it all over, jumping all over the place and screaming their songs..

I seriously get tired of the very pro-Eastern European comments. To me Portugal manages to send two in a row an extremely nice and talented song. This one IS Portuguese, unlike 2008 song which is written by a SLOVENIAN guy.. and yes apart from Fado, Portugal's music is very very often just the simple but oh so effective little tune. To me there's no doubts, we finally have MUSIC here, and not just an "Eurovision entry" like so many countries tend to do..

Obrigado Portugal!

Don't understand me wrong, but your comment was very funny for me. I know much better songs for my taste from Portugal. They had a great song last year with ethnic elemens.  That was a "VERY PORTUGUESE SONG". THIS song is not what I want to see at ESC and either to listen in my free time. Were many great songs in ESC, but I will not be happy to listen all of them in mp3. My taste in music is very varied. At ESC I will prefer songs like My No 1, Shady lady, Shake it, Let me try or balads like Lane Moje and this not because I am from Eastern Europe. Culturally, Romania is more close to Italy, France, Spain or Portugal than to our neighbours. I never been an ignoramus guy. And talking about my Eastern preferences, from when is Norway in East? Norway is my fav this year so far. About Spain... the song is better than this, but not excelent. Was overrated and won probably because was on old enough song and well know by people. And Moldova will send a song in Moldovan when Austria will send a song in Austrian. For me sounds excelent Moldavian entry and because, probably, there is used the language I talk and Romanian ethnic elements plus that I know that Nelly is a very very very good singer.

Guys calm down, would you ?  ::)

It is true that there's no such thing as Moldovan language but this topic is dedicated to Portugal 2009.  :)

Back on topic ... I feel sorry for Portugal. They always pick something considered "different" (read weird) by the rest of Europe and end up getting votes from the fish only (in their case the neighbourly voting resumes to that) .
This time I don't think that they chosed the best song but I like its simpleness and the fact that, like it or not, it is real music, not some universal pop trash.

I am calm!  :) Only that my favorite this year is a Nordic (Western) country who use ehtnic sounds in their song and come with a nice show. I never had an imagnary line between Eastern and Western in ESC. The Western acuse us that we don't know them and we never vote for them. Let's see if this year will repea this because so far the Western looks much better for me. And I think that not knowing that Moldavian language doesn't exist is a proove that the Western look less to our side... just to see who ignore who.

Why do we need to have an East/West divide anyway.  Surely a good song is a good song no matter where it comes from.

Why do we need to have an East/West divide anyway.  Surely a good song is a good song no matter where it comes from.
I never ever want a division. And in my lists I surely have as much songs from one "side" as from the other one, just look at my board this year. And when non-esc fans say "only east wins" I always ask them if they really think Finland is an "Eastern european country".. anyway as for Moldovan lol sorry, I thought it existed as a dialect, since Moldova as far as a country goes has a very troubled history, bitten by both Romania and Ukraine, it barely should exist the way it does now. But Austrian doesn't exist but Viennese does and one of the best Austrian esc song was performed in it, so I thought the pro-Moldovan song was using a more local dialect.

Now on to Portugal. Coz that's what's at sake here. I ABSOLUTELY DISAGREE. Portugal 2008 was NOT portuguese at all. It's not coz you have the good instruments that you can say it has the spirit. It had as much spirit of portuguese than Titanic had of great cinema or Spice girls do of the feminism questions.. It's fake, but it makes you believe it has some.. Come on a Slovenian guy wrote it for god's sake. And I do like the song and Love Vania but as far as a song goes, no. Whereas Portugal 2009 is way more subtle and sincere about its roots, explaining why the big pop got beaten by it in this NF. But if you like the very pro-Moldovan song better, fine by me, you can have your own taste.
But what I truly disagree about is your conception of music and esc. If anyone is putting a stupid division in this thread it's you by thinking that on the one hand there's music and on the other there should be esc. No. It's not because modern esc is being crappy that we HAVE to enjoy the biggest craps like "my Number 1" "Shaky lady" or "Balkan girls" which are all quite hateful (only Ukraine 2008 out of these three is reasonably ok). I don't want a division. I like music and want great music in esc just like in 1965. If we have Lovebugs and Patricia Kaas, or "Fairytale" as well, why can't all countries send that? They can, and it is up to us to tell them what we think of their shits they send.
By the way the best proof the West and East have nothing to be divided about are the big shits from the West : Ireland, Spain, Netherlands.. Lately in esc the East has often given us better songs (Lejla, My Story, Oro, Deli, Pokusaj) and that's just a fact. Oh and I'm calm I just don't like it when people say that "tam tam this and Portugal with that" when THIS is Portugal being good BIG TIME

I just said my opinion... too much tam-tam for a song like this, exaclly how you said that My no. 1  is quite hateful. It seems I don't like Portugues music then. Should I like it? About Moldova again you said wrong informations, but better to not start with political things here.  :innocent: I also like many songs from West like My impossible dream or Alvedansen and I really was shocked to see them doing bad. Portugal 2008 is one example for what I persoanlly expect to see from Portugal. For me Eurovision is equally a contest for songs, voice and show. And when I said songs I say and comercial songs. A special song I liked at ESC was Magdi Ruzsa - Unsubstantial Blues. before ESC dunno if I was able to listen until the final of the song, but Magdi made it... this is what I expect from a "something else" song at ESC.

and wear ethnic clothes....
so that everyone can confuse them with Moldova, Armenia and all the rest? come on a song doesn't need to go all the way over the top with big dance routines and very typical and cliche ugly ethnic clothes to get to be remembered, coz everyone else does it

let them be sincere and humble and hope for the song to be enough on its own to conquer europe.. that would bring a change to Esc (but Marija did it..)

The semi performance was slightly nervy - but in the final it was spot on.  Great entry
