Ukraine
Svetlana Loboda
Be my valentine (Anti-Crisis Girl)
(18th)

Baby, I can save the world
I'm your anti-crisis girl
Baby, I can save the world
I'm your anti-crisis girl
Baby, I can save the world
I'm your anti-crisis girl

Before you comment on this, either of you two (most likely readers), I will say it myself, yeah, I'm overrating this one most likely. But heck, did I mention Sweden was a guilty pleasure? Then what about this one?

I'll admit the performance won me over, this didn't win me over musically, but just by keeping me entertained. The performance itself was just brilliant, and the only thing I found lacking was the presence of those gladiators. It has been scientifically proven (*Lonter is lying!*) that one can't give male & female slutness at the same time without the whole idea looking cheap and forced. The rest of the show was quite amazing actually and I was actually somewhat negatively surprised at seeing this under Greece, Azerbaijan and Turkey. The positive side to the failure of this entry is rather obvious (this kind of entries are discouraged), but I found the whole performance rather good and over-the-top in a good way.

An huge grower during and after ESC.

Germany
Alex Swings Oscar Sings Dita Strips!
Miss kiss kiss bang
(17th)

Miss Kiss Kiss Bang, come let us sing
Miss Kiss Kiss Bang, now let us swing
Shake your sweet, sweet, sweet little thing
Mrs Kiss Kiss Bang, come let us swing

Talking about slutness...

Well, this slutness was carried out quite nicely actually and nobody can deny this is brought in a better, more tasteful package than the previous entry (which goes into ''So bad it's good'' territory). My opinion of the germany entry changes all of the time and for most of the time this one was my least liked entry out of the Big 4, but reconsideration has made me put this higher than before (and UK way lower).

I personally really enjoyed the ESC performance and I found Germany to be rather underrated. Still, considering they weren't the only ones and that it was a rather tough and brilliant year that can be excused (specially considering some other entries were even more underrated). I found the performance to be good, tasteful and enjoyable. Enjoyed it and don't really have anything to bash.

If you do wonder why this is below some of the entries I will mildly bash later on I can answer now is that I just enjoy it a bit less than the ones above.

Breathe easy Morgan, breathe easy. Remember, this is above Ukraine, above Ukraine, above Ukraine. Breathe...
To any other readers: The Bosnian review mostly said that while it had fantastic lyrics, fantastic performance and fastastic everything that I found myself getting a bit tired of it and thus even when I can still fully recognize that it is awesome in certain areas that I ended up enjoying several entries more than it (still appreciating it a lot though) and that while it was no Lejla, it was also no Rijeka... (which is good in my book)

Iceland
Yohanna
Is it true?
(15th)

Falling out of a perfect dream
Coming out of the blue

Is it true? (Is it true?)
Is it over?
Did I throw it away?
Was it you? (Was it you?)
Did you tell me
You would never leave me this way?

We all knew this was going to win the semi the moment the performance started with that amazing shot of her eyes. The product here was just really, really, really well sold (except that damn dolphin, that was waaaaaay over the top). The ballad is rather enjoyable but hey, there are better.

Would have been a really great winner, though.

Russia
Anastasiya Prikhodko
Mamo
(14th)

Mum, and you've been telling me not to desire
Mum, and at that time I didn't know where trouble was
Mum, and you've been telling me that time is like water
Mum, Mum, Mum, love is trouble

Sometimes it gets hard to forget that the performer behind the song you are enjoying right now has ideas that are rather off-setting, controversial and IMHO, just downright stupid. Thankfully, this isn't such a case, as Anastasiya puts such a passion in her performances that make this weird little song so much more enjoyable. It's not that the song is brilliant because of the song itself, but the performance itself (Anastasiya's) is just perfect for it, and her crazy shouting near the end it's curiously a joy for my ears.

Even better, this song was even done better than expected in ESC itself with the whole backdrop idea, but it has always been brilliantly performed, they just found a way to even emphasize that fact more, and done so rather successfully. Lovely.

Moldova
Nelly Ciobanu
Hora din Moldova
(13th)

All the mountains, all the seas
All the winds are dancing hora
It's a dance you've never seen
From my country called Moldova

Oh my, this has grown so much on me lately (well, since the second semi), heck, it was on my bottom 5 before and I claimed this one to be the worst moldovan entry to date (which it isn't, although I admit that I do have problems giving that dishonour to any of their lovely entries). The performance was fricking brilliant. That's how you get the best of your song and how you show everybody how your song was meant to be interpreted.

Brilliant, just brilliant.

Still 12 more enjoyable songs, but heck, what Nelly managed with this is very meritory. Fantastic.

Poland
Lidia Kopania
I don't wanna leave
(12th)

I don't wanna leave, but it's my destiny
I will wrap my arms around the world
You'll see that I am not a child
'Cause I'm standing taller this time
Take it step by step, do my best, that's right
But I will never say goodbye

Oh, this one needs some explanation.

Yup, the lyrics are absolutely horrible and yeah, she killed it in the night. The song isn't that great as a ballad either (though better than some others of it's genre) and the choreography was unnecessary and rather unoriginal. What does it do in 12th place then, considering the songs below this one that havent' received nearly as much bashing? Simply...

I just love the sound of her voice, she is what makes this rather average song special, she has a beautiful sound which makes this one rather interesting. The motive is fickle, but heck, her voice is just lovely and in the weird moment that I did this ranking, that was enough to beat the songs above this one. Hope she learns to sing, gets a better song with a better lyricist and decides to try again. Oh, and while the choreography was highly unoriginal, it was also rather enjoyable and accompanied the song well.

(I blame the fact about me checking the second semi some hours before doing this ranking about this high place for this one)

Finland
Waldo's people
Lose control
(11th)

I don't wanna lose control, but I'm falling
I just can't believe it
Never thought that I would be the one falling down
I don't wanna lose control, but I'm falling
I just can't believe it
Never thought that I would be the one falling down

Oh, the king & queens of guilty pleasures, Waldo's People. Initially, I found it an original choice and I guess I putted it somewhere in my lower top ten, later on, I found it to be an unoriginal choice and this plummeted in my rankings. Cue ESC and nothing changes my opinion about this song much.

Then let's go to a couple of weeks later and this just start to grow again in my rankings. The chaotic performance might have added to this little predictable dance-ish song, but hey, it's freakingly catchy and the areas where it is bad it goes into ''it's so bad it's good'' territory.

:sing: I don't wanna live a lie checking on my sanity 'Cause baby, maybe I can do without is it all a fantasy?

I swear I get rid of the rest of the remaining craps which have grown on me because I'm a sucker for catchyness (or because I like the artist itself for some reason or another) by the time the top 5 comes xD, but anyhow, here  is my top ten in alphabetical order:

Armenia - Inga & Anush Arshakyanner - Nor par
Cyprus - Christina Metaxas - Firefly
Estonia - Urban Symphony - Rändajad
France – Patricia Kaas – Et s’il fallait le faire
Israel - Noa & Mira Awad - Einaiych (There must be another way)
Latvia - Intars Busulis - Probka
Lithuania - Sasha Son – Love
Portugal - Flor-de-Lis - Todas as ruas do amor
Serbia - Marko Kon - Cipela
Spain – Soraya - La noche es para mi

I'd imagine my top 5 is rather predictable now, but hey, maybe it isn't, I will try to present it tomorrow.

And I'm painfully aware that this ''middle 15'' might have been painful to watch, but hey, for it's good parts and it's bad parts, that's how I decided to rank them yesterday and there's nothing I can do about that xD (except growing a different taste).

8 good entries.. oh god i knew Cyprus was gonna be in your top 10.. it totally is the kind of cheesy craps you go for, especially with the all pure factor which you just adore.. god the country that sends virgin mary on esc woul win you over! and of course, i can't really blame you for having your own country in, though Spain, last with the juries, is definitely NOT worth it at ALL!! the other 8 i either like or love and 3 of my top 5 are in your top 10

(you aren't the only one performing alone this time Chiara)
well there were only two of them.. but one did win some of the juries vote, the other one just didn't.. the public didn't vote for either
and yes chiara i think will be back in esc in 2011.. She can't return in the maltese final after having won it, it's their rule, so not in 2010 but if chiara enters the maltese final in 2011 she sure will win! they have cheating juries there and maltese people love her and trust her

Let it be said that I absolutely hated their performance in ESC for starters, man, they blew it.
if we fish back some of my posts in the switzerland 2009 topic, you'll see that i warned us all but mainly My Star that Lovebugs only had studio files around and that I feared very much their live qualities. My fear became true.. How hard will I be on it when I do my ranking though?

But this one is extra cheap though, so it can't be just that, I blame her voice.

I mean, talking about  :sing: but this is my destiny  :sing:, please... the lyrics were so full of clichés it was painful. I'd guess this is the odd song I can't really explain why I like even full-knowingly seeing how crappy it is in most of it's areas, it must be the voice (or the fact that I always end up liking the polish entries after ESC somehow)

yeah it's quite a shocker but Lonter has admitted this is a very subjective ranking! We all do "subjective" ranking, but apparently when a song is crappy, even if we do like it, we're not as foolish as giving it top 10 like Lonter does!
