Eurovision Song Contest 1956 - Lugano, Switzerland

The first Eurovision Song Contest was held in the Teatro Kursaal in Lugano, Switzerland on Thursday 24th May 1956. The idea behind the contest was to unite the televisual corners of Europe through the medium of song. There were 10 countries wanting to take part but only 7 actually entered - the remaining 3 countries all entered the following year. With 7 countries taking part all were asked to send 2 songs for the judges. Each nation was also to supply 2 judges to judge the songs. Luxembourg could not send judges so used 2 Swiss judges instead. The full results were never made known for the 1956 contest. Only the winner was ever revealed, although there was rumour that Lys Assia remembers that one of the German entries finished 2nd.

Eurovision Song Contest 1957 - Frankfurt Am Main, Germany

The second contest saw the remaining founding countries entering for the first time, taking the total number of participants to 10. Voting was made public for the first time with each country having a jury of 10 members each giving a point to their favourite entry without voting for their own country. The shortest ever ESC performance was in 1957 when Patricia Bredin sang the first United Kingdom entry for a measly 1 minute 52 seconds. She was followed on stage by the longest ever ESC performance when Nunzio Gallo spent over 5 minutes performing the Italian entry.

Eurovision Song Contest 1958, Hilvershum, Netherlands

The 3rd Eurovision Song Contest was the first one to be held by the winning nation from the previous year. It was also the 2nd and last contest without a song sung in English with the United Kingdom not taking part. The most famous and successful ESC entry ever came 3rd in the 1958 contest. Better known as Volare the Italian entry became a huge Worldwide hit and won the inaugural Grammy for "Best Song". The Eurovision juries thought differently.

Monaco made a disastrous debut finishing last. Again the biggest hit from the contest was not the winning entry and came from the same source as the previous year. Eurovision Song Contest 1960 - London, United Kingdom

The 5th Eurovision Song Contest was the first to be hosted by the BBC and the first to be hosted by Katie Boyle, who went on to host the contest 3 further times. In the largest contest ever, Norway became the latest country to join the contest. A respectable start for the Norwegians would show no sign of what would happen to them in the future. The winning song was sung by the daughter of Jacques Pils who had finished last the previous year representing Monaco.

Eurovision Song Contest 1961, Cannes, France

With the venue and host the same as the 1959 contest there was an air of familiarity about the 1961 contest. However it was the largest contest to date with 3 new countries taking the total number of participants to 16. With world music embracing change and rock n' roll being prevalent, the Eurovision Song Contest was won by a typical French style ballad (allbeit for Luxembourg) more suited to the 40s and 50s than the blossoming decade.

Eurovision Song Contest 1962, Villa Louvigny, Luxembourg

The 7th Eurovision Song Contest was held in the smallest venue to date following Luxembourg's win the previous year. For the first time since it's inception there were no new countries joining the contest so the number remained at 16. France continued to dominate the contest securing their third win in the last 5 contests. The voting was changed slightly with the juries awarding 3, 2 and 1 point to their favourite 3 songs. With so few points available it was perhaps inevitable that some songs would not receive any points at all. As it turned out 4 songs ended up with 0 points at all. For the record the first of those to perform was Belgium making them the first country to score 0 points at the ESC.

Eurovision Song Contest 1963, London, United Kingdom

France declined to host the contest again having hosted twice in recent years. The ever keen BBC took the reins and the contest returned to London with Katie Boyle once again presiding over matters. Again there were no new countries but the contest itself was the most controversial yet. The voting system changed again with a jury of 20 from each country giving 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 point to their favourite entries. This was the easy part. During the voting procedure everything was going smoothly until the Norwegian votes. Everyone apart from Katie Boyle heard the Norwegian votes clearly. However Katie declared she had not heard them and would return to the Norwegian spokesperson at the end. When they returned the Norwegian votes had changed giving victory to their neighbours Denmark at the expense of Switzerland who would have won if Norway's original votes had stood. Who says neighbourly voting is a new thing.

Eurovision Song Contest 1964, Copenhagen, Denmark

The 9th Eurovision song contest produced one of the hugest victories recorded. After years of producing big hits and not winning the contest Italy finally emerged victorious finishing an astonishing 32 points ahead of the runners up (United Kingdom). The voting changed again due to the controvesy of the previous year. This year the juries once again voted for their top 3 but this time giving 5, 3 and 1 points to those top 3. The margin of victory was so huge that it would not have made any difference what system was used the winner would have remained the same. Portugal made the most disastrous start to their Eurovision careers finishing with 0 points, a distinction they would hold alone for 30 years until Lithuania did the same.

Eurovision Song Contest 1965 - Naples, Italy

The 10th Eurovision Song Contest took place in Naples and was the biggest contest to date with Ireland making their debut and Sweden returning after missing the 1964 contest. A total of 18 countries took part in the contest. For the 4th year running 4 countries ended the contest on 0 points. The voting system was changed slightly again. Juries were again asked to rank 3 songs with 5, 3 and 1 points but if they only wanted to vote for 1 song they would give it 9 points, if they wanted to vote for just 2 songs they would give them 6 and 3 points. Belgium were the only country not to vote for 3 songs giving 6 to the United Kingdom and 3 to Italy. The winning Luxembourg entry was written by the legendary Serge Gainsbourg - the first and most successful of his 3 entries

Eurovision Song Contest 1966 - Villa Louvigny, Luxembourg

The 11th Eurovision Song Contest produced a number of firsts and lasts. All in all the results were plain weird. The top 5 (Austria, Sweden, Norway, Belgium & Ireland) all achieved their highest positions to date. The United Kingdom achieved their lowest position to date (9th). Portugal finished 13th for the 3rd consecutive year. Denmark finished outside the top 10 for the first time and didn't return for 13 years. France, who had never been out of the top 5 before this year, finished 16th. Monaco and Italy had been in the top 10 each year both finished with 0 points. Udo Jürgens was making his 3rd consecutive appearance. Raphael was making the first of 2 consecutive appearances for Spain. Michele Torr, the Luxembourg entrant, returned 11 years later for Monaco. Lill Lindfors and Ase Klevelund would return to present the show in 1985 and 1986 respectively. The Dutch entrant, Milly Scott, became the first black entrant. We would have to wait 35 years before the first black winner when Dave Benton won in 2001.

Eurovision Song Contest 1967, Vienna, Austria

After being runners up 5 times in the previous 8 contests the United Kingdom finally struck lucky and walked away with the prize. Singing barefoot, and singing a song she has constantly claimed she detests, Sandie Shaw finished miles ahead of the opposition. Luxembourg's 4th place song went on to be a huge international hit in an instrumental version by Paul Mauriat. Serge Gainsbourg tried again to win the contest writing the entry for Monaco. It was the first time that the top 2 songs were sung in English.

Eurovision Song Contest 1968, London, United Kingdom

All the talk before the contest was about who would be runners-up. The home entry was a huge hit all over Europe before the contest. It was written by the same team that wrote the previous years winner. It was being performed by the biggest star in Europe. It couldn't fail surely. The juries begged to differ as Spain pulled of an unlikely victory by 1 point despite a last minute change to the performer as the original performer wanted to perform in Catalan and the Spanish delegation refused. Ironically, the Norwegian entry had to be changed as their original choice sounded very like "Summer Holiday" a hit for the UK's entrant. Eurovision's most prolific presenter, Katie Boyle, was presenting her 3rd contest.

Eurovision Song Contest 1969, Madrid, Spain

The last contest of the 1960s decended into farce when four songs finished the contest on 18 points. With no precautions in place in case of a tied result, the scrutineer had no choice but to declare the contest a four way tie. The host was so incredulous she had to ask 3 times if that was the official decision. It was and the ridiculous result still stands. It was this result that caused the EBU to look at the voting system and to realise it was seriously flawed. It was another 6 years before a reliable system was found. Spain became the first country to successfully defend the title (albeit in a 4 way tie)

Eurovision Song Contest in the '70s

Eurovision Song Contest 1970, Amsterdam, Netherlands

After the farcical result the year before the Nordic block decided to boycott the contest. Austria, having refused to take part in Franco's Spain the year before, were again missing. Portugal were also missing, but not until they'd selected a song. The contest was in crisis and needed a song to revive it. It got it as well. Ireland scored their first victory. The Spanish entrant was a former football goalkeeper turned singer who would go on to be Spain's biggest selling singer. The German entrant was Katja Ebstein, making the first of her 3 appearances all of which ended with a top 3 finish making her the only artist with 3 top 3 finishes as an artist.

Eurovision Song Contest 1971, Dublin, Ireland

After the success of the 1970 winner the Nordic block returned as did Austria and Portugal. Malta made a rather unsuccessful debut finishing last. The major change was in the voting system. For reasons best known to themselves the EBU decided that the voting should be more "interactive". Each country was to provide 2 jurors - 1 under 25 and 1 over 25. Each juror was to give a mark between 1 and 5 for each entry. This of course meant that scores would be higher than ever before. It also meant that no song would finish with 0 points. It was lucky for the EBU that the winners in 1971 and 1972 were clear. The flaws in this system would be exposed in 1973, but more of that later.

Eurovision Song Contest 1972, Edinburgh, United Kingdom

Monaco were unable to host the contest after their victory in 1971 so the contest returned to the United Kingdom, but for the first time it wasn't held in London, rather the capital of Scotland, Edinburgh. For the one and only time in their history Ireland sang in Gaelic. With Malta singing in Maltese (and coming last again) it meant that the UK entry was the only entry in English (the last time this happened and the first time since 1964). Vicky Leandros returned 5 years after coming 4th to claim victory. Germany's Mary Roos would return 12 years later. Sandra from the Netherlands would return twice more under different names in the next 7 years. Carlos Mendes returned for Portugal to give them their best result ever, a distinction he'd hold for 24 years.

Eurovision Song Contest 1973, Luxembourg, Luxembourg

An historic ESC in many ways. The first country not geographically in Europe, Israel, took part for the first time. A female conductor was seen for the first (and second) time when Monica Dominique was the conductor for the Swedish entry (Nurit Hirsch became the second female conductor 5 songs later when conducting the Israeli entry). The rule stating each country must sing in a language native to that country was relaxed for the first time. Sweden and Norway were the only ones to take advantage of this rule, with Sweden singing in English and Norway singing in numerous languages (although predominantly in English & French). The Swedish entry had some of the most controversial lyrics ever seen at ESC. The lyrics "your breasts are like swallows in nesting" were considered offensive by some and hilarious by others. The voting systems flaws were seriously exposed this year when only 6 points separated the top 3 entries. How much was to do with the performance of one of the Swiss juror's overacting is unknown but it was clear the system needed to be changed. Luxembourg became the first country to successfully defend their title without sharing it. Finland's Marion Rung returned after 11 years to better her country's highest finish by 1 place. She would be their most successful entrant for 33 years. The Belgian entrants were due to sing at the 1971 contest in Dublin but were forced to withdraw due to illness. They did go on to represent their country but perhaps shouldn't have bothered coming a convincing last.

Eurovision Song Contest 1974, Brighton, United Kingdom

A brief return to the old scoring system of 10 jurors each giving 1 point to their favourite entry produced one of the contest's hugest winners, not in terms of points scored or the margin of victory but by the sheer magnitude of what the winning artists went on to achieve. Having tried unsuccessfully to represent their country in 1973 (and changing their name as well) Abba took Eurovision to a new level (which was never really achieved again). After 3 years where the winner was a French chanson (albeit for Monaco and Luxembourg) which showed the contest was still dated it was a bold move by the Swedes to chose a modern song. Gigliola Cinquetti returned again 10 years after her victory to claim 2nd place. 1974 also saw the first of 18 entries written by Eurovision's most prolific composer, Ralph Siegel, he wrote the Luxembourg entry. Greece entered the contest for the first time. France withdrew from the contest a couple of days before it due to the death of President Pompidou. The Portuguese entry was used as an anthem for an uprising in Portugal that would ultimately overthrow the government.

Eurovision Song Contest 1975, Stockholm, Sweden

The major talking point of the 1975 contest was the new voting system, which is still in use today. A jury of 10 members were required to give votes to their 10 favourite songs, giving 12 to their favourite, 10 to their 2nd favourite then 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 to their remaining 8 favourites. For the record the first country to receive 12 points were Luxembourg. As for the songs there really isn't much to note really. The winner remains the highest scoring entry for the Netherlands. Malta returned for a last go before disappearing for 16 years. Turkey made an inauspicious debut finishing last. The UK finished 2nd despite Bruce Welch forgetting the second line of the song and stating "I knew it!". Ellen Nikolaysen was performing for Norway for the 3rd consecutive year (albeit the 2 previous years as a member of The Bendik Singers).

Eurovision Song Contest 1976, The Hague, Netherlands

The biggest selling Eurovision song of all time won the 1976 contest. Singing first with a quirky song and an equally quirky dance routine the UK entry was never challenged for the title. The winning song went on to sell millions all over the world and has been declared as Eurovision's biggest selling single - beating Waterloo and Volare. Peter, Sue & Marc returned for Switzerland singing in English (the 2nd of 4 entries in 4 different languages for the group). Sandra returned for the home country having ditched Andres from 1972 and singing on her own. Spain finished outside the top 10 for the first time since 1966. They remain one of only 2 countries to have finished in the top 10 for 10 consecutive years (the other being the United Kingdom's long run of top 10 finishes (1959-1977 inclusive)).

Eurovision Song Contest 1977, London, United Kingdom

For the fourth time the contest was held in London. The contest marked the last time to date that France has won the contest. The Swarbriggs returned (Plus Two) for Ireland two years after their first appearance. Michèle Torr returned this time for Monaco 11 years after she represented Luxembourg. Anita Skorgan made the first of her 4 appearances (once in duet with Jahn Teigen once as an uncredited backing vocalist for Teigen). Ilanit returned for Israel, Mia Martini made her first appearance for Italy returning 15 years later, Monica Aspelund represented Finland 6 years later her sister followed. The main talking point was the language rule which was reinstated shortly before the contest. However as both Belgium and Germany had already chosen their entries they were allowed to stay in English. It would not be for another 22 years that the language rule once again disappeared.

Eurovision Song Contest 1978, Paris, France

The 1978 contest was the largest to date with 20 entries and produced one of the most controversial winners ever. The Israeli delegation threatened to pull the song from the contest citing it as "a ridiculous children's song". The legitmacy of Israel participating in the event had often been discussed, as geographically it is not in Europe, although it met all the criteria for participating. Whatever the arguments the Israeli entry romped to victory beating the returning Jean Vallée into 2nd place (which was Belgium's best placing to date). Luxembourg decided to ask Spanish superstars Baccara to sing their entry (in heavily accented French it failed to impress). Ireen Sheer returned to the contest this time for Germany. Denmark returned to the contest after 13 years away. The United Kingdom finished outside the top 10 for the first time ever. However the most famous and talked about moments in the contest was the 0 points "scored" by Norway's Jahn Teigen. Thanks to Teigen (and subsequently Finn Kalvik) Norway became synonymous with 0 points.

Eurovision Song Contest 1979, Jerusalem, Israel

The 1979 contest was the first to be held somewhere considered to be outside of Europe. It produced one of the closest contests since the 4 way tie of 1969. With 2 voters left Israel were on 107 points and Spain were on 106 points, however with the Spanish still to vote a lot would ride on the votes of the Austrian jury. When they awarded 8 to Israel and 10 to Spain the Spaniard's took the lead - it would all rest on their own votes. Rumours have been rife ever since that the Spanish jury changed their votes at the last minute to ensure that they didn't win due to the costs of holding the contest. This has never been substantiated though and remains a rumour. Israel became the 3rd country to retain the title and the first not to defend it withdrawing from the 1980 contest. Anne-Marie David returned to the contest 6 years after winning this time representing her home country, France. Tommy Seebach made the first of his 3 appearances for Denmark, Katri Helena her first of 2 for Finland. Peter, Sue & Marc were back again this time in German and with Pfuri, Gorps & Kniri and assorted kitchen and garden items. Sandra Reemer was back for her 3rd and final attempt for the Netherlands, this time called Xandra. Monaco made their last appearance for a quarter of a century eventually returning in the 2004 Semi-Final.

ESC in the '80s

Eurovision Song Contest in the '80s

Eurovision Song Contest 1980, The Hague, Netherlands

The 25th Eurovision song contest was an historical contest for many reasons. Israel withdrew from the contest because it was scheduled for a holy day. It's the only time that the defending champions have not defended their title. Their place was taken by Morocco - so far the only African nation to take part. Their debut was not a good one with only Italy giving them any points at all. It was also the first contest in which Greece and Turkey took part together. Eurovision's two most successful artists took part and finished 1st and 2nd. For Johnny Logan it was the first of 2 victories as an artist. For Katja Ebstein it was her 3rd participation and her 3rd top 3 finish. There were a couple of returning artists. Paolo del Medico returned 11 years after her debut and improved her position to 4th. Maggie MacNeal had lost the Mouth from 1974 and finished 2 places lower than in 1974 in 5th. Anna Vissi made her first appearance for Greece 26 years before her 2nd appearance for Greece (she appeared for Cyprus in 1982 as well). Norway and Belgium battled it out for the weirdest entry of the year. The Norwegian entry was a homage to Lapland and started quite sensibly until a bizarrely dressed man appeared singing "hey noni" or something like that. The Belgian entry was a homage to Eurovision itself. Both were bizarre and both failed miserably. Luxembourg had the most ridiculous entry however and a performance which included a man (Ralph Siegel no less) in a penguin suit.

Eurovision Song Contest 1981, Dublin, Ireland

The 1981 contest was the 2nd to be held in Dublin. Austria opened the contest for the second consecutive year represented by Marty Brem who had been part of the Austrian group the previous year. They were once again followed on stage by Turkey. Singing 4th was former winner Jean-Claude Pascal returning 20 years after his victory. His song was more suited to 1961 than 1981 but he finished a respectable 11th. Israel returned to the contest having missed 1980 and we welcomed Cyprus to the contest. Amongst the other returning contestants was Cheryl Baker who had been part of Coco in 1978 which was the UK's worst place song to date. She more than made up for that disappointment. Also returning, for the 4th time and in their 4th language, were Peter, Sue & Marc. Björn Skifs was making his 2nd appearance for Sweden. Tommy Seebach was making the 2nd of his 3 appearances for Denmark. The 4 countries who had scored 100+ points in 1980 all did so again and were joined by France. Norway scored 0 points again. Italy were absent from the contest. The voting produced one of the funniest and most famous moments in ESC history when host Doireamm Mo Bhriain called for the Yugoslav jury's votes. There was complete silence. She kept trying and trying to reach them. Eventually contact was made and Doireann asked for the scores to which the Yugoslav spokesperson snapped "I don't have them!". The audience erupted into laughter. The voting was close all the way through. With only 2 countries left to vote The UK, Germany and Switzerland were all tied on 120 points and France were a further 17 points behind. It was looking unlikely that the Swiss would win as they were one of the countries left to vote. The Swiss jury gave nothing to Germany, 8 to the UK and 12 to France to leave the scores as UK 128, Germany 120, Switzerland 120, France 115. It was down to the Swedish votes. Switzerland were out of the running straight away getting only 1 point. The votes proceeded until 8 without any of the other challengers getting anything. When the Swedish gave 8 points to the UK victory was theirs, despite 10 for France and 12 for Germany.

Eurovision Song Contest 1982, Harrogate, United Kingdom

For reasons best known only to themselves the BBC chose the small town of Harrogate as the venue for the 1982 contest. Trailers before the contest were asking the question "Where is Harrogate?" - the same question that must have crossed the minds of most people watching the contest. It certainly must have crossed the minds of the French authorities who withdrew from the contest calling it "A monument to drivel". The most noticable thing about the contest was short titles and artists names. 13 of the artists had only 1 name, 5 songs had only 1 word titles and a further 2 had 2 word titles which were 1 word repeated. Perseverance finally paid off for Ralph Seigel & Germany. Having written the German entries from 1976, 1979, 1980 and 1981 as well as the Luxembourg entries from 1974 and 1980 he finally got his victory. Jahn Teigen returned to the contest 4 years after his humiliating 0 points in Paris and teamed up with 2 time former contestant Anita Skorgan. The female half of the British duo, Bardo, was a member of Prima Donna 2 years previously. Anna Vissi appeared for her native Cyprus 2 years after and 24 years before appearing for Greece. Finland ended with 0 points despite the positive message of the song. The voting was one sided right from the very beginning as the German song held the lead right from the first votes except for the 2nd set of votes in which Luxembourg ignored the German entry completely (the only country to do so) and by giving 10 to Israel briefly gave them the lead. The winning margin of 61 points was absolutely huge and remained the largest points victory for 15 years.

Eurovision Song Contest 1983, Munich, Germany

The 1983 contest started with the longest introduction on record being conducted in 3 languages. Staged in what looked like a giant barn the contest itself was fairly forgettable. The winning song was the first winner since the Spanish, Dutch and French winners from 1969 not to hit the chart in the UK. Israel came 2nd for the 2nd consecutive year represented by one of Eurovision's most successful artists, Ofra Haza. Carola represented Sweden for the first of 3 times. Jahn Teigen returned for the 3rd time and finally finished in the top 10. Ami Aspelund represented Finland 6 years after her sister. Guy Bonnet returned for France 13 years after his first appearance. Mariella Farre made the first of her 2 appearances for Switzerland. For the first time since 1966 2 songs finished on 0 points. The Turkish entry was quite frankly bizarre starting as a ballad, changing into a Dixieland number, before going operatic and finishing in a dramatic climax. It was doomed to failure. Following the Turkish entry on stage was a brave entry from Spain. Totally ethnic and sung by a lady wearing a blanket it was equally doomed to fail.

Eurovision Song Contest 1984, Luxembourg, Luxembourg

For the 4th and final time the small state of Luxembourg held the contest. The host Desirée Nosbusch was only 19 and remains the youngest host ever. Sweden opened the contest with a very slick performance of a very ordinary song, but swept to victory. With the 1983 winner being performed last and the 1984 winner being performed last it was the 2nd time (after 1969 when the UK and Dutch entries were performed consecutively) that winning songs had been performed consecutively albeit 12 months apart Smiley. This years UK entry was booed by the crowd due to English football fans running riot in Luxembourg the previous autumn. Mary Roos returned for Germany 12 years after finishing 3rd. The Irish entry was written by 1980 winner Johnny Logan and sung by Linda Martin who would return 8 years later to win with another Logan written song. Hot Eyes made the first of 3 appearances for Denmark. Turkey managed their best finish to date finishing 12th. The voting was quite close. With Portugal the final country to vote, Sweden lead Ireland by 6 points. The tension didn't last long as Portugal only awarded Ireland 2 points and Sweden's second victory was assured.

Eurovision Song Contest 1985, Gothenburg, Sweden

Sweden held the contest 10 for the 2nd time 10 years after they first hosted it. Former contestant Lill Lindfors presented the show and provided the most memorable moment in the show as well. When coming onto the stage to present the votes she "caught" her dress on something and the skirt ripped away from the top leaving her showing off her shapely legs. She looked embarrassed but proceeded to unravel her top to reveal a long white gown. Lill was not the only person to return to the contest. The winning song was performed by Bobbysocks who were made up of Hanne Krogh, who had represented Norway in 1971, and Elisabeth Andreassen, who had been half of the duo Chips who represented Sweden in 1982. The other half of Chips was Kikki Danielsson who represented Sweden as a solo artist in 1985. Wind represented Germany for the first of 3 appearances. Izhar Cohen returned 7 years after his victory. Al Bano & Romina Power returned for Italy after a 9 year gap and once again finished 7th. Gary Lux made the first of 2 consecutive appearances for Austria. Hot Eyes were back for Denmark, and Mariella Farre returned for Switzerland this time accompanied by Pino Gasparini. Ireen Sheer came back for a third time and was joined by 5 others to form the internationals. MFO appeared for the first of their 2 entries for Turkey. Lia Vissi represented Cyprus as her sister Anna had 3 years previously.

Eurovision Song Contest 1986, Bergen, Norway

The most northerly contest to date saw the introduction of Europe's most northerly country as Iceland joined for the first time. Former contestant Ase Klevelund returned, via politics, to host the contest following from fellow 1966 contestant Lill Lindfors who'd hosted the previous contest. As for the contestants themselves ther was only 1 of them returning for a second go. Elpida had represented Greece in 1979, when she finished 8th. In 1986 with a weaker song (so weak in fact that she was refusing to sing it almost until the moment she was due on stage), and no Greece to give them points she finished last. Although she was the only returnee there were others making their first appearances. Yugoslavia's Doris Dragovic would return 13 years later once the country had separated and represent her native Croatia. Ketil Stokkan represented the home country to a respectable 12 and would return 4 years later to come last. Dora appeared for the first of her 2 appearances for Portugal also doing much better first time round than she did on her return 2 years later. A member of the Icelandic group ICY was Eiríkur Hauksson who returned 5 years later as a member of Just4Fun representing Norway and a further 16 years after that he was back representing Iceland as a soloist. Half of the Swedish duo, Lasse Holm had composed the 1982, 1983 and 1985 Swedish entries but had not been an artist previously. Israel had their worst result to date. Turkey finished in the top 10 for the first time 11 years after their debut - they would wait another 11 years before they returned to the top 10. Belgium were the only members of the original 7 contestants not to have won the contest. This was rectified this year with a resounding victory with the highest score to date. Despite saying in the lyrics of the song that she was 15, Belgian singer Sandra Kim was actually only 13. She is (and will always remain due to age restrictions implemented after the 1989 contest) the youngest ESC winner.

Eurovision Song Contest 1987, Brussels, Belgium

The only contest to be held in Belgium was historic for quite a few reasons. Johnny Logan returned to the contest 7 years after his victory in The Hague and did exactly the same thing again....scored a victory with Germany in 2nd place. The 2nd place was historic in itself with Wind returning 2 years after coming 2nd in Gothenburg, albeit with some personnel changes. It was the first (and to date only) time that the top 2 places were taken by 2 artists who had previously finished in the same position. The only other returning artist was Austria's Gary Lux who fared a lot worse than he had done 2 year's previously. The United Kingdom finished outside of the top 10 for only the 2nd time and had it's lowest position to date. 70's punk star Plastic Bertrand tried to resurrect his career by representing Luxembourg and failed miserably. Turkey scored their 2nd 0 points in 4 years. Sweden had to change the title of their song as the original title had "Coca-Cola" in it and the EBU did not approve.

Eurovision Song Contest 1988, Dublin, Ireland

The 1988 contest was the 3rd to be held in Dublin and produced one of the most successful winning artists ever, although it was not her winning that catapulted her to stardom. There were a host of returning stars in this contest. Yardena Arazi became the first person to be a contestant (as part of Chocolate Menta Mastik in 1976), then a host (in 1979) and then a contestant again. She only agreed to take part after visiting a clairvoyant who told her that the song drawn 9th would win the contest. Israel had been drawn 9th so Yardena was convinced she would win. However Cyprus (who'd been drawn 2nd) withdrew when it became evident that their entry was a reworking of a song from their 1984 national final. The clairvoyant was proved correct as with Cyprus' withdrawal Switzerland were moved up to 9th in the draw. Also returning for another go were Hot Eyes, with a heavily pregnant Kirsten, for Denmark. Their 3rd and final attempt finished 3rd. Tommy Körberg returned after 19 years. MFÖ returned 3 years after their 1st appearance. Dora returned for Portugal and faired worse than she had done 2 years previously in Bergen. Iceland finished 16th for the 3rd consecutive year. Austria finished with 0 points for their first time in 26 years. The voting was close throughout, but it was clear it was a 2 horse race very early on. With only the votes of the Yugoslav jury to come the United Kingdom was 5 points ahead of Switzerland. When Yugoslavia gave 6 to Switzerland it put them 1 point ahead. They then proceeded to give 7 to the Netherlands, 8 to Germany & 10 to Norway. It was down to the final vote - if Yugoslavia gave the UK 12 it would be a British victory, if they didn't the Swiss would win. When the 12 points went to France the Swiss began to celebrate.

Eurovision Song Contest 1989, Lausanne, Switzerland

Eurovision returned "home" for the first time since the inaugral contest. Celine Dion broke the mould by not only reprising her winner but also her new single at the start of the show. The contest itself did not have a single returning artist in it but there were 2 artists making their first of 2 appearances. Thomas Forstner equalled Austria's best finish since their victory finishing 5th, he would fare a lot less well on his return 2 years later. Mariana Efstratiou had been a backing singer for Greece in 1987 but this was her first appearance as a soloist. She also fared less well on her return 7 years later. The main talking point of the contest was the age of the contestants. Half of the Israeli duo was 12 years old, as was the French contestant. In subsequent years the EBU enforced an age limit on contestants stating that they had to be 16 or over. The voting was completely one-sided. Despite getting 0 from the Italians who voted first, Yugoslavia took the lead after the 3rd set of votes and was never challenged after that. Iceland finally moved from the 16th place they'd occupied since their debut - finishing last with 0 points.

ESC in the '90s

Eurovision Song Contest in the '90s

Eurovision Song Contest, 1990, Zagreb, Yugoslavia

With the country in turmoil and on the brink of war a lot of countries seized the opportunity to send songs with messages of unity, peace and understanding. The success of these messages covered the entire scoreboard from 1st to last. The contest got off to a false start as the singers for the Spanish entry walked off stage because they couldn't hear the backing track. In a clever move considering the location the Italian entry used former Yugoslav entrants Pepel in Kri (1975) as his backing group. Ketil Stokkan returned for Norway 4 years after coming 12th he fared a lot less well this time around finishing equal last. Icelandic duo Stjornin returned a couple of years later as members of Heart2Heart. The female half, Sigga, returned again a further 2 years later as a solo artist. Serge Gainsbourg was back for a final attempt to win again as a composer this time as composer of the French entry. The voting was uneventful with Italy taking the lead with the first set of votes. They relinquished for a while to Ireland after the Icelandic votes only to regain it after the Irish failed to help their own cause by awarding Italy their 12 points. Italy were more helpful to their own cause by completely ignoring both the Irish and French entries.

Eurovision Song Contest 1991, Rome, Italy

Italy's 2 former winners returned to present the show. 1964 winner Gigliola Cinquetti and the previous years winner Toto Cutugno were chosen as the presenters, with varying degrees of success. Gigliola was professional if a little reserved, Toto was a complete shambles prompting UK commentator to comment "it was a black day when he won last year". It was not only Toto who made a mess of things though. The orchestra was causing problems not least for the Greek entry where a saxophone solo appeared to be played by someone who'd never played the instrument before. Carola returned for Sweden hoping to improve on her 3rd place of 8 years earlier. Norwegian group Just4Fun included Hanne Krogh, who'd been a soloist in the 1971 contest and a member of winner Bobbysocks in 1985, and Eirukur Haukson who'd been a member of ICY for Iceland in 1986 and would return as a soloist in 2007 again for Iceland. Malta returned to the contest after a 16 year break. Austria finished on 0 points for the 2nd time in 4 years with Thomas Forstner hoping to repeat or improve his 5th place of 3 years ago failing miserably. The voting was fascinating all the way through. Israel took an early lead until the Austrian votes handed the lead to France. Luxembourg voting next then handed the lead to Spain. It was looking like a close fight between Israel and Spain. However as votes for the Spanish appeared to dwindle and the votes for the Israelis stayed steady the votes for Sweden and France were getting bigger. With only Italy left to vote the scores showed Sweden in the lead with 146, Israel were 2nd with 139 and France were 3rd with 134 points. The Italian votes proceeded nicely getting all the way to 7 with nothing for any of the top 3 songs. 8 points followed for Turkey, followed by 10 for Malta. It all came down to who the Italians gave their 12 to. When the points were revealed to go to France total confusion reigned. Sweden and France were tied on 146 points. Toto started screeching "Mr Naef, Mr Naef" at the scrutineer Frank Naef. The EBU had in place guidlines for such occasions as this. If the result is a tie then the country with the most 12 points would be declared the winner (both Sweden & France had received 4 top marks) if it was still tied the country with the most 10 points would be declared the winner (Sweden had 5 10s to France's 2). With this explained Sweden was declared the winner.

Eurovision Song Contest 1992, Malmö, Sweden

The 3rd contest to be held in Sweden was held in the 3rd different Swedish city. After Stockholm in 1975 and Gothenburg in 1985 it was Malmö's turn in 1992. The contest was yet another historical contest for many reasons not least the last appearance for Yugoslavia (although in some quarters it's considered as the first appearance for Serbia & Montenegro). There were many returning entrants and many making first of many appearances. Most noticable was the winner, Linda Martin, returning 8 years after coming 2nd to take victory. In doing so she handed Johnny Logan another piece of history, having sung a winner written by someone else, sung a winner written by himself, and written a winner sung by someone else. Mia Martini returned for Italy 15 years after her first appearance. Wind returned for the 3rd time for Germany with only 2 of it's original members. Icelandic group Heart2Heart was basically 1990 entrants Stjornin with one extra member. Evridiki appeared for the first of her 3 appearances for Cyprus and Tony Wegas was making the first of 2 consecutive appearances for Austria. Blind singer Serafin Zubiri appeared for the first time for Spain and returned 8 years later. In the voting despite early good showings for Malta and the United Kingdom, Ireland took the lead about half way through and was never really challenged after that. Greece equalled their highest ever position.

Eurovision Song Contest 1993, Millstreet, Ireland

The tiny village of Millstreet in County Cork was chosen to host the 1993 contest. 3 new nations were welcomed to the contest after a qualification round containing 7 countries who had wanted to join the contest. The 3 new countries were Bosnia & Herzegovina, Croatia and Slovenia. Slovakia, Estonia, Romania and Hungary all had to wait another year. It was also announced that the countries finishing in the bottom 7 would miss the following years contest to make way for all the new countries from the former Eastern Bloc who wanted to take part. As it happened only the bottom 6 were relegated along with Italy who withdrew after the 1993 contest. Luxembourg, having finished in the bottom 6, have never returned to the contest. There were 3 returning artists, Finland's Katri-Helena returning 14 years after her debut, Tony Wegas returning for Austria and Tommy Seebach returning for a 3rd and final time for Denmark. The voting was made closer than it should have been. For some reason they were unable to contact the Maltese spokesperson straight away so their votes were held back until last. Ireland had held the lead pretty much since the beginning but with only the delayed Maltese votes to come they held an 11 point lead over the United Kingdom. The votes proceeded with neither country receiving anything. With only their 12 points to reveal neither country had received any points. Malta proceeded to give 12 to Ireland and a 23 point victory was theirs. Ireland became the 4th country after Spain, Luxembourg and Israel to successfully defend the title.

Eurovision Song Contest 1994, Dublin, Ireland

For the first time ever the Contest was held in the same country on consecutive years. The contest welcomed 7 new nations, the biggest influx of debut countries since the inaugural event. Having missed out in the qualifying round the previous year Hungary, Estonia, Romania & Slovakia all made their debuts and were joined by Russia, Lithuania & Poland. Elisabeth Andreassen was back again. Having been half of Chips for Sweden in 1982 and half of Bobbysocks for Norway in 1985, she was again back for Norway this time with Jan Werner Danielsen. Evridiki tried again for Cyprus and just as she had 2 years earlier she finished 11th. Sigga had ditched her fellow member of Stjornin and Heart2Heart and came back on her own. Marie Bergman had been a memeber of Family Four for Sweden in 1971 and 1972. She returned 22 years after her last appearance this time with Roger Pontare who himself would return to the contest 6 years later. Half of the Bosnian duo, Alma Cardzic, was making the first of 2 appearances. Much was made of the age of the Dutch singer before the contest, she was 59, but whether it was her age or her song which gave her the poor result remains open to debate. A major advancement was made with the giving of votes this year as for the first time video links were used to speak to the spokespeople. The voting itself was incredibly one-sided, although after the first 3 sets of votes (Sweden, Finland & Ireland) it looked as though Hungary would run away with the title as they had scored 12 from each jury (the first (and only) time that any country had received the top marks from the first 3 juries). Ireland soon took the lead and never relinquished it. The song was seen by some commentators as a gentle attempt not to win, the jurors disagreed and it soon became the first song to score more than 200 points. Poland, on their debut, finished a distant 2nd but still had the best debut result ever. Hungary faded slightly but still finished 4th. At the other end of the spectrum for the debut makers, Lithuania became the 2nd country after Portugal in 1964 to score 0 on their debut. Estonia fared little better scoring just 2, thanks to the Greek jury (who incidentally were the only country not to vote for Ireland....they actually ignored all of the top 4 entries)

Eurovision Song Contest 1995, Dublin, Ireland

Having made history by winning the contest for 3 years running the Irish again made history by hosting the contest for the 3rd consecutive year, and for the 2nd consecutive year at exactly the same venue (another first). The contest itself produced a somewhat controversial winner. The controversy surrounded the song itself which only had 8 short lines of singing and over 2 and a half minutes of instrumental. Some people considered it not to be a song at all but an instrumental. The protests made no difference and Norway won their second contest. Rolf Løvland, had written Norway's previous winner in 1985 (and also provided backing vocals on that as well) and Secret Garden was his group. Owing much to Irish violinist Fionnuala Shery, and perhaps influenced by the interval act the previous year, the victory was never in doubt. There were 3 artists making their first appearance. Croatian group Magazin included Danijela who would return 3 years later as a soloist. Darja Svarger appeared for Slovenia and returned 4 years later. Alexandros Panayi was the Cypriot representative and returned 5 years later as half of Voice. Russia were represented by a bizarre looking man in heavy make-up singing a "Lullaby for a volcano". Belgian representative, Frédéric Etherlinck, was the grandson of a Nobel Prize winner.

Eurovision Song Contest 1996, Oslo, Norway

For the first time ever there was a pre qualifying contest involving all entries (except hosts Norway). The juries heard a recording of the songs from all 29 of the countries wanting to take part, including Macedonia trying to make their debut. The juries then scored the songs based on the recording alone with the top 22 scoring countries qualifying for the final. Amongst those missing out were Germany, the one and only ESC final they have missed. Also missing out were Denmark, Israel, Russia, Romania, Macedonia & Hungary. Ireland returned to winning ways scoring their 4th victory in 5 years (although they had a huge hand in the 1995 winning song as well). Portugal scored their highest ever position finishing 6th. Elisabeth Andreassen was back for a 4th time, but for the first time as a soloist. Her complete record at Eurovision reads 1982 - 8th, 1985 - 1st, 1994 - 6th, 1996 - 2nd - an impressive record. Mariana Efstratiou returned for Greece 7 years after her debut. Turkish entrant Sebnem Paker would return the following year, as would the female half of the Estonian duo, Maarja-Liis Ilus. Cypriot Constantinos Christoforiou made the first of his 3 appearances. In the voting Ireland took the lead early on and, despite losing it briefly to Croatia, was never really challenged. Norway finished 2nd despite not having a single top mark awarded to them.

Eurovision Song Contest 1997, Dublin, Ireland

After a year's break in Norway the contest returned to The Point Theatre in Dublin for the 3rd time in 4 years. Italy returned to the contest for the last time, preferring to concentrate on the San Remo festival. However they went out with a bang finishing 4th. Turkey finished in the top 10 for only the second time in 22 years with the returning Sebnem Paker finishing 3rd. Maarja-Liis Ilus returned for Estonia this time on her own. Alma Cardzic returned for Bosnia & Herzegovina also on her own this time. The winning entry was sung by Katrina & The Waves who had had a huge Worldwide hit in the mid 1980s with "Walking On Sunshine". The margin of victory was enormous. They scored a new highest score, beating the previous best by 1 point, and they finished 70 points ahead of their nearest challenger. A record 10 countries gave it top marks with a further 5 giving it 10 points. In fact only 6 of the voting countries didn't have the song in their top 3 and only 2 of those (Spain and Malta) giving it less than 6 points. It remains one of the most comprehensive victories in ESC history. At the other end of the table Norway scored their 4th 0 points. They were joined on 0 points by Portugal who hadn't scored 0 since their debut 33 years earlier. There was a major change to the voting in 1997 with the introduction of televoting in Austria, Germany, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Rather than a jury deciding on the votes the watching millions could have their say. Over the next couple of years more and more countries used televoting until it became standard.

Eurovision Song Contest 1998, Birmingham, United Kingdom

Birmingham the 5th city in the United Kingdom to host the contest. Macedonia finally made their debut in the contest 2 years after failing in the 1996 preselection process. The contest was shrouded with controversy from the moment the Israeli entrant was announced. Dana International was a transsexual. Many Israeli politicians and dignitaries objected to her taking part. However she did take part and the controversy factor played it's part in the huge audiences that watched all accross the continent. Returning to the contest was Danijela, who'd been part of Croatian group Magazin 3 years previously. Chiara made her debut for Malta, equalling their best ever finish, and would return 7 years later to do the same again. Edsilia represented the Netherlands scoring their best result since their win 23 years before. Edsilia would return 9 years later with a lot less success. Switzerlands scored their 3rd 0 points. The voting was close throughout. With Israel ahead most of the time but Malta, UK, Netherlands were never too far behind. Croatia and Belgium always scored well but were never challenging. With 2 countries to vote (Turkey & Macedonia) the scores were Israel 159, Malta 155, UK 144, Netherlands 140. Turkey gave 5 to leaders Israel, 7 to the Netherlands (to effectively end their challenge) and 10 to Malta to give them the lead by a point. 12 to the United Kingdom meant any one of the top 3 could win with the final set of votes. Malta was leading on 165, Israel on 164 and UK on 156. With only their 8, 10 and 12 to give out Macedonia had not yet given any of the top 3 any points at all. The 8 points went to Israel putting them on 172, meaning that the UK could not win despite getting the 10 points from Macedonia. It all hinged on who Macedonia gave their 12 to - if it went to Malta they would win, if it went to anyone else Israel would win. It came as no real surprise when Macedonia awarded their 12 to neighbours Croatia thus handing a 3rd victory to Israel.

Eurovision Song Contest 1999, Jerusalem, Israel

For the second time Jerusalem played host to the contest...and for the second time a song in a contest one of the songs used the host city in it's title....the first instance being in Jerusalem 20 years previously!. The language rule was removed in 1999 meaning the countries could send their entry in any language. 12 countries took advantage of this, including 9 singing entirely in English. Germany went down the multilingual route using German, Turkish and English. Israel used English and Hebrew. Bosnia & Herzegovina used Bosnian and French. Returning to the contest 5 years after their 0 point debut were Lithuania. They faired marginally better this year, finally breaking their duck with 13 points. Doris Dragovic returned this year for Croatia 13 years after she appeared for Yugoslavia. Darja Svajger returned for Slovenia 4 years after her debut. Selma Björnsdottir appeared for Iceland and returned 6 years later. Eden were Israel's representatives. A member of their group, Eddie Butler, returned 7 years later. The voting was close between Sweden and Iceland all the way through with Iceland holding the lead for long periods. With Bosnia & Herzegovina & Estonia still to vote however Sweden held a slender 3 point lead. When the Bosnian votes ignored the Icelandic entry and gave 12 to the Swedes victory was assured. Because the song used synthesised backing voices, Croatia's score was later reduced by 33% to 79. This reduction was applicable for the calculation of five-year averages to determine participation in future contests, but it was decided to leave the actual placement in the 1999 result unaffected.

Eurovision Song Contest 2000, Stockholm, Sweden

The first contest of the new millennium was the second contest to be held in Stockholm. Latvia entered the contest for the first time finishing a creditable 3rd. Roger Pontare returned for Sweden 6 years after he'd appeared with Marie Bergman. Serafin Zubiri returned for Spain after 8 years. Alexandros Panayi returned for Cyprus as a member of Voice, 5 years after being a solo artist. Israel opened the contest in controversial style with a stage show which included 2 men kissing and the group waving a Syrian flag. Unlike 2 years previously though controversy didn't help the Israeli cause. Linda for the Netherlands appeared in a huge dress which later revealed her dancers. Nikki French for the UK perhaps summed up her country's attitude to Eurovision by singing "Don't Play That Song Again" which gave them their worst result to date. The voting was one sided as Denmark received 12 points from the first country to vote, Israel, and never relinquished their lead finally finishing 40 points ahead of nearest rivals Russia. The Danes had not won for 37 years and the Olsen Brothers were the oldest winners to date.

Eurovision Song Contest 2001, Copenhagen, Denmark

The 2001 contest saw a new era dawn in the history of the contest with a country from the so-called "new school" winning for the first time. Estonia's victory could not have been more surprising. A rank 50-1 outsider with the bookmakers pre-contest it was considered a no hoper. It just goes to show that bookmakers should stick to horses and dogs. Greece returned to the contest after a 2 year break with their biggest success to date. Using a group who were based in Scandinavia was a clever ploy as Greece finished 3rd even without their biggest ally, Cyprus. Half of Antique, Helena Papaprizou, returned 4 years later to claim Greece's first victory. Also returning, this time 5 years later, would be Malta's Fabrizio Faniello with a great deal less success than Helena. The Dutch entry could have caused confusion. Called "Out On My Own" it was similar to the Norwegian entry called "On My Own". To add to the confusion both the Dutch and German entrants were called Michelle. There was something familiar about the Swedish entry this year. It was later revealed to be a possible plagiarism of the Belgian entry from 1996. It has never been officially called as such but many ESC fans consider it to be a blatant rip off of the earlier entry. That's not to say all ESC fans. There are some who just don't see the similarities at all. The voting was again one sided as Estonia took an early lead. Denmark did have the lead for a while but 4 consecutive 12 points to Estonia meant victory was theirs. Having had the oldest winners the previous years Dave Benton took that record from Jorgen Olsen by a matter of months.

Eurovision Song Contest 2002, Tallinn, Estonia

After speculation as to whether the Estonian broadcaster could afford to hold it, the contest moved to a country in the former Soviet Union for the first time. As one Baltic nation held the contest another wins it. Latvia only gained entry to the contest after the Portuguese had declined to take part. Constantinos Christoforiou returned for Cyprus, this time as part of boy-band One, 6 years after he first took part. He would return again 3 years later. Karolina Goceva represented Macedonia and would return 5 years later. After being a backing vocalist for Sweden in 1999 and Malta in 2000, Sahlene represented the home nation. Corinna May represented Germany. She'd been chosen to represent Germany in 1999 but her song was disqualified. Monica Anghel was half of the Romanian duo. She was Romania's representative in 1996 but that song did not make it through the qualifying round. The Slovenian entry was the most controversial of the evening being performed by 3 men dressed as female air hostesses. The voting was close throughout between Malta and Latvia. Malta held a slender lead for almost half of the voting. After the Swiss votes Latvia took the lead and held it until the end. With only one country left to vote Latvia held a 3 point lead over the Maltese. The last country to vote was Lithuania who gave Malta 3 points to tie the score. Surely they wouldn't ignore their neighbours Latvia. They didn't and gave them 12. The win owed as much to performance as to the song. Marie N had 3 costume changes during the performance.

Eurovision Song Contest 2003, Riga, Latvia

The contest stayed in the Baltics moving from Estonia to Latvia. It was the biggest contest ever with 26 countries taking part, including the introduction of Ukraine. The hosts were 2 of Latvia's previous participants, Marie Naumova, the winner from 2002, and Renars Kaupers, who was singer with Brainstorm. Ich Troje represented Poland and would return 3 years later. The Russian representatives were t.A.T.u. who had had a massive Europe wide hit earlier in the year with "All The Things She Said". Rumours of them appearing naked on stage and engaging in various lesbian activites were unfounded. The Belgian entry took the language rule literaly by performing in an imaginary language. The United Kingdom reached new lows, both in performance and result. Singing completely off key and out of time it came as no real surprise that for the first time the UK finished last and got 0 points. It looked for a long while that the hosts would join the UK on 0 points and but for a little neighbour voting from Estonia, they may well have done. The voting was incredibly close throughout. The lead was never more than 7 points all the way through. The lead was held by Turkey for a long while. Belgium then took the lead and held it until the final set of votes. Russia were also in with a chance of taking the title. With only Slovenia to vote the socres were Belgium 162, Turkey 157, Russia 152. The Slovenians gave only 3 to Belgium meaning that Turkey needed 10 or more to win and Russia could not now win. With their 10 and 12 to award there was still no sign of points for Turkey. When the 10 points went to Turkey the scenes in the greenroom were of wild Turkish celebrations. 12 points to Russia meant that only 3 points separated the top 3 songs. After 28 years of waiting and only 3 top 10 finishes Turkey were victorious. It was also the first time that a song drawn in position #4 had won the contest.

Eurovision Song Contest 2004, Istanbul, Turkey

ESC 2004

Eurovision Song Contest 2004, Istanbul, Turkey (semi final)

For the first time ever the contest was held over 2 days. With 36 entries the contest was too large to hold on 1 day. So the organisers decided that the Big 4 countries (France, Germany, Spain, United Kingdom) plus the 10 highest scorers from Riga (not including any of the Big 4 countries) would qualify directly for the final in Istanbul. All other entries would have to qualify from a televised semi-final where the top 10 scoring countries would qualify for the final. Monaco returned to the contest 25 years after their last appearance. Albania, Andorra, Belarus and Serbia & Montenegro all made their debuts (although some argue that Serbia & Montenegro should be credited for Yugoslavia's last entry in 1992). Poland, France and Russia didn't televise the Semi-Final as they had already qualified for the final. From 2005 it has been mandatory for all countries to broadcast both the Semi-Final and Final irrespective of participation in either of them. After a short interval the 10 qualifiers were announced as Serbia & Montenegro, Malta, Netherlands, Albania, Ukraine, Croatia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Macedonia, Greece and Cyprus. Switzerland went down in history as having the most unappreciated song in the history of the contest. 32 countries could have voted for it - not one of them did and it ended last with 0 points.

Eurovision Song Contest 2004, Istanbul, Turkey (Final)

The final of the 2004 contest took place 3 days after the semi-final. The 10 qualifying countries joined the 14 pre-qualified countries in the final. There were no returning artists in the final at all, although many of the backing singers had been here before. Also none of the entrants have returned to date. However there were a couple of entries written by previous participants. The Bosnian entry was written by Vesna Pisarovic who'd sung for Croatia 2 years previously. Stefan Raab wrote the German entry, which, unlike his previous 2 compositions, was not a comedy record. Serbian representative Zeljko Joksimovic would return to write the Bosnian entry 2 years later. The voting was a long winded process with all the 12 losing semi-finalists as well as the 24 finalists voting. Debutants Serbia & Montenegro held the lead for almost half the voting. When Iceland gave Ukraine 12 points they took the lead and were never challenged after that. The year after their debut Ukraine had won the contest. With 36 countries voting the scores at the top of the leaderboard were a lot larger than previously. The top 3 all outscored the previous highest score.

Eurovision Song Contest 2005, Kyiv, Ukraine

ESC 2005

Eurovision Song Contest 2005, Kyiv, Ukraine (Semi-Final)

The Semi-Final of the 2005 contest was larger than the 2004 Semi-Final. Moldova and Bulgaria joined the contest for the first time and Hungary returned for the first time in 7 years. The Lebanon had initially joined and had selected their song, but later withdrew due to financial reasons, although rumours were rife that they withdrew because the broadcaster refused to show the Israeli entry. So with 25 countries vying for the remaining 10 places in the final the competition was steep. Iceland were the only country to have a returning artist with Selma returning 6 years after being a runner up. She fared less well this year failing to qualify. The 10 qualifiers were Hungary, Romania, Norway, Moldova, Israel, Denmark, Macedonia, Croatia, Switzerland & Latvia.

Eurovision Song Contest 2005, Kyiv, Ukraine (Final)

The Final took place 2 days after the semi-final. Once again the 10 qualifiers joined the Big 4 and the 10 highest scorers from the previous year. Helena Paparizou returned for Greece, this time without the other half of Antique. Chiara returned for Malta 7 years to improve her position by 1 place. Constantinos Christoforiou returned for the last of his 3 appearances for Cyprus. The Ukrainian entry caused some controversy, being added straight into the national final without going through the qualification process. The biggest talking point, however, was the fact that the countries that finished in the bottom 4 positions were the so-called Big 4 nations. The Big 4 have a guaranteed place in the final every year but with poor performance such as this their guaranteed place does not seem justified. The voting was fairly close early on with the lead changing hands regularly. Once Greece finally took the lead they didn't relinquish it. 31 years after their debut it was the longest wait for a first win so far - beating Belgiums 30 year wait by 1 year.

Eurovision Song Contest 2006, Athens, Greece

ESC 2006

Eurovision Song Contest 2006, Athens, Greece (Semi-Final)

The 51st Eurovison Song Contest was slightly smaller than the previous year. Austria and Hungary declined to take part and Serbia & Montenegro withdrew due to a scandal during their selection process. Armenia joined the contest so the number of participants stood at 37. The Semi-Final welcomed Carola back to ESC, once again representing Sweden and 15 years after she'd last appeared. She easily made it to the final. Also returning, after a shorter break of 3 years, were Ich Troje for Poland. They could not recreate their top 10 finish of 2003 and failed to make the final. Finland provided the main talking point with monster rockers Lordi appearing in masks with a hard rock (hallelujah) song. Lithuania were optimistic with their song called "We Are The Winners". Iceland had to change the lyrics of their song to remove a swear word from it. Silvia Night managed to upset almost everyone with her antics and failed to qualify for the final prompting another tantrum. The 10 qualifiers for the final were Russia, Macedonia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Lithuania, Finland, Ukraine, Ireland, Sweden, Turkey and newcomers Armenia, who having opened the Semi-Final and closed the final became the first country to open and close the same contest.

Eurovision Song Contest 2006, Athens, Greece (Final)

The final was once again held 2 days after the semi-final. 45 years after their debut, and having finished no higher than 6th previously, Finland emerged victorious holding the lead from start to finish. The monsters of rock Lordi had done 4 things that 40 previous Finnish entrants couldn't do. 1) win, 2) finish top 5, 3) score 100+ points and 4) finish ahead of the United Kingdom!!. Returning to the contest, along with Carola who had been in the Semi-Final, were Anna Vissi returning for Greece 26 years after her debut, and 24 years after her last appearance. Eddie Butler was a member of Israeli group Eden in 1999 and returned as a soloist 7 years later. Fabrizio Faniello returned for Malta and finished last avoiding the dreaded 0 points thanks to the Albanian voters. Ralph Siegel and Bernd Meinunger were back again as composers and lyricist for the 18th time each (most, but not all, of them together). The Bosnian entry was written by Zeljko Joksimovic who'd been runner up for Serbia & Montenegro 2 years previously. Serbia & Montenegro themselves had to withdraw from the contest due to a voting scandal in their National Final. However they were still able to vote in the contest. The Big 4 once again fared poorly with Germany doing best finishing 14th. France and Spain were once again in the bottom 4 with the United Kingdom only a couple of places higher in 19th. Romania brought Italian back to the contest with parts of their song Tornero being sung in the language. They finished highest of the direct qualifiers, finishing 4th

Eurovision Song Contest 2007, Helsinki, Finland

ESC 2007

Eurovision Song Contest 2007, Helsinki, Finland (Semi-Final)

A huge 42 countries took part in the 52nd Eurovision Song Contest. 28 of them in the semi-final vying for only 10 places in the final. Austria and Hungary returned after missing the 2006 contest. Serbia and Montenegro also returned, this time as two seperate countries. Georgia and the Czech Republic made their debuts. Monaco withdrew from the contest having failed to make it out of the Semi-Final since their return in 2004. Karolina Goceva returned for Macedonia, 5 years after her first appearance. Eirikur Hauksson was back for a 3rd attempt this time as a soloist having previously been a member of Icy in 1986 and Just4Fun in 1991. Evridiki was back for the 3rd time for Cyprus hoping not to finish 11th again. She didn't as she finished 15th. Edsilia Rombley was back for the Netherlands hoping to emulate her high finish of 1998, but it wasn't to be as she trailed in 21st. Olivia Lewis finally made it to the ESC after years of trying to win the Maltese National Final. Unfortunately for her her perseverance didn't pay off as she finished 25th. The Czech Repulic's debut was saved from an ignominous start by a single point received from the Estonian televoters. The 10 qualifiers were Belarus, Macedonia, Slovenia, Hungary, Georgia, Latvia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Turkey and Moldova.

Eurovision Song Contest 2007, Helsinki, Finland (Final)

The final was held again 2 days after the semi-final. Newcomers to the final were Georgia (making their debut in the contest), Belarus (at their 4th attempt), Bulgaria (at their 3rd attempt) and Serbia (making their debut as an independant country). Macedonia, having qualified for the final for the 4th consecutive time, were the only country in the final with a returning artist, Karolina Gocheva. Slovenia on the other hand finally made the final on their 4th attempt. Ukraine had the main talking point of the contest with the drag act Verka Serduchka. The Big 4 all wanted to improve their poor finishes of recent years. Once again Germany faired best but still finished a distant 19th. Spain avoided finishing in the bottom 4 for the 3rd consecutive year by finishing 20th. France weren't so lucky finishing 22nd for the 2nd consecutive year (as they had finished 23rd in 2005 it has been a bad few years for France). It looked for a long time that the United Kingdom would finish on 0 points again, but 7 points from Ireland and a truly bizarre 12 from Malta saved them from it, but not from finishing in the bottom 3 again. For the 2nd year running the Albanian votes saved a country from scoring 0 points. This time the lucky recipients were Ireland. The voting was fairly close but Serbia were never really challenged greatly. Serbia officially won on their debut but the question remains - was it really their debut having appeared before with Montenegro.

ESC 2008

Eurovision Song Contest 2008, Belgrade, Serbia (Semi-Final 1)

For the first time ever there were 2 semi-finals and 1 final for the Eurovision song contest. Only the defending champion (Serbia) and the Big 4 had automatically qualified for the final. The remaining places were to be filled by 10 songs from each Semi-Final. 9 of those songs were chosen by televotes and the final place was decided by a jury vote. In Semi-Final 1 the jury vote didn't make a difference as the song finishing 10th in the televotes was the jury pick. Dima Bilan returned to ESC hoping to improve on his 2nd place of two years previous. San Marino & Azerbaijan made their debuts in the contest with varying degrees of success. Ireland sent a puppet turkey called Dustin as their representative. Joke entries seemed to be the order of the day - but generally fared badly. Eurovision Song Contest 2008 Belgrade, Serbia (Final)

The final took place the Saturday after the 2 semi-finals had taken place. The finalists were the 10 qualifiers from each semi-final plus defending champions Serbia and the Big 4. Returning to the Eurovision stage were Dima Bilan & Charlotte Perrelli who'd both successfully negotiated the Semi's on their return (one slightly easier than the other). Dima was looking to improve on his 2nd place from 2006 whilst Charlotte was hoping to emulate Johnny Logan and become a double winner of the contest. The Serbian entry was written by former competitor (and host of this contest) Željko Joksimovic. The voting was predictable in parts and frankly bizarre in other parts (none more so than Bulgaria giving Germany 12 of the 14 points that they received all night - solely because one of the members of German representatives No Angels was Bulgarian). Spain had a pre-qualifying round hosted online through myspace and it was won convincingly by a bizarre act called Rodolfo Chickiliacuatre who wanted us to dance the "chiki chiki". France chose renowned musician Sébastien Tellier who appeared onstage in a golf-cart and for the first time ever performed the French entry entirely in English. The UK once again chose to pick a talent show loser - this time X Factor's Andy Abraham runner-up to Shayne Ward in 2006. There was a lot of controversy regarding the voting with so many of the top marks being predictable and the winner was clear very early on in the proceedings...not because it was the best song or best performance but because it had the biggest voting diaspora. Veteran UK commentator Terry Wogan was upset not only with the "friendly voting" but also with the last place achieved by the UK citing "institutionalised racism amongst Eastern European Nations" and that they would never vote for a black man east of Berlin...until it was pointed out to him that the only coloured winner of the contest represented Estonia - very much west of Berlin. Wogan would later resign as UK commentator after almost 40 years of doing the job. Dima Bilan became the 5th artist, and the first male, to finish both 1st & 2nd in ESC...the others were Lys Assia, Gigliola Cinquetti, Linda Martin & Elisabeth Andreassen
